Sailing SCAMP Wildflower 10-25-2024 in Tomales Bay
Here is a short video of another wonderful day in Tomales Bay. Sarah, Dan, Dennis, and Doug were out there too. This is my first time sailing with all of my new custom cushions. So nice. At the end of the video I am standing in the SCAMP and steering just with my weight. Very easy to do.

How to make a Coaming Cushion for a SCAMP sailboat
Переглядів 232Місяць тому
This is how I made a set of cushions for my coamings and seat tops on SCAMP Wildflower #330. I am a total novice, and have used this project to learn how to sew. I plan to make a custom tent for Wildflower, but had to get some skills first. I had already made the seat top cushions and the port side coaming cushion before making this video. I felt confident enough now with my skills to show how ...

Another wonderful fall day in the SCAMP. Today much learning took place. I anchored with my new nylon anchor from Cooper Anchors, and jumped into the water a number of times to test my re-entry slings. Worked perfectly. I also did some near shore anchoring practice with my new anchor and the Anchor Buddy. Really terrific for that purpose. In the video I demonstrate a parking maneuver for those ...

This is a short video showing re-entry from the water into a SCAMP sailboat. The idea and original execution was designed by Howard Rice, and is really applicable to many small boats. A strap of webbing such as rock climbing nylon, strong enough to hold a person, is set with carabiners to pad eyes mounted to the deck fore and aft I have a re-entry sling on both the port and starboard side. All ...

A short video of a beautiful day of sailing at Tomales Bay, Point Reyes National Seashore. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Today Dan and Sarah had Aydin, their grandchild (I am beyond jealous) with them on the Daysailer. I believe this was his first time in a sailboat. He is visiting from New York. Dennis also was out with us in his Laser. I am sailing my lovely SCAMP Wildflo...

SCAMP #330 Wildflower and SCAMP #6 B Frank sailing on Tomales Bay on a blustery day in June 2024. I am launching from my usual spot at Marconi Cove with my good buddy Thom. He bought #6 from Dan Phy. #6 has a storied history, and is a great boat. Winds were brisk from 15-18 knots, although are friend Doug figured them to be 18-20. Either way, we started with 2 reefs in and stayed that way. The ...

Another lovely day in Tomales Bay in the spring. I just love a quick day sail there. We launched from Marconi Cove in light winds. The wind built a bit to moderate lovely sailing. As usual SCAMP Wildflower performed so well. I was trying out my new arrangement with the centerboard uphaul, which was terrific. It is a fiddle with becket and jam cleat, and it makes it easy to adjust the board on t...

Another lovely day in Tomales Bay with SCAMP Wildflower and good friends. We had a break between storms, so it was a good time to get out and sail in our favorite place. We typically launch our boats from a dirt lot at Marconi Cove in Marin County, California, USA. 4 wheel drive is a necessity for this dirt area lest you get stuck, but my Subaru Outback is up to the task. One of the many great ...

This video is longer than usual, because I just want the memories. Diana and I had a lovely fall day sail in Tomales Bay, CA, USA. It was so clear and lovely. We started out with light steady winds, which built fairly quickly into the teens with gusts in the 20's. Our home-built SCAMP sailboat Wildflower #330 was built for just these conditions. Despite her small size at under 12 feet, she has ...

Fall sailing in my homemade SCAMP sailboat Wildflower on Tomales Bay in Marin County, Point Reyes National Seashore, is just sublime. Sweet, soft winds today. I decided to launch my Parrot Anafi drone from the boat and get some interesting footage. Launching is easy. Retrieving is a challenge solo. I had to fly the drone near the boat, gradually bring her in, stay clear of the sail, and land he...

Another lovely day at my favorite sailing place, Tomales Bay, Marin, CA USA. This time I have two of my brothers with me. It was a typical summer pattern here with moderate winds building throughout the afternoon, with some gusts. I had 1 reef in the main which was perfect most of the time. Three of us were nice and comfortable on our little boat. Brother Steve got some time at the helm for the...

This is just a short video of another wonderful day on Tomales Bay in California sailing SCAMP #330 Wildflower. This time my lovely wife Diana is with me. Great tutorial Daniel and will be very helpful when I come to make cushion covers for #623. Thanks for sharing man👍
You bet! Feel free to ask questions
Measures of boat?
11 feet 11 inches. Around 400 lbs without water ballast. 175 lbs of water ballast
@dndrich I'm interested in knowing how you distribute those 175 pounds of water ballast in an 11 foot boat... it's interesting
@ there is a tank amidships. The boat has a sole and then the hull. So there is much storage available and also an area for a sealed tank. The tank is opened via a small garboard drain in the hull that can be closed. Water is then poured into the tank with a bucket and a hatch is closed. Voila.
@@dndrich awsome! Do you use that same ballast water for drinking? Or is it exclusively for the stability of the ship?
@bilimpirosanchez just stability. But one could put in containers of water and use them as needed.
Brother Daniel, you Swarthy Sea Dog......................So pleased to have a small hand in building your dream boat. You are one prolific sailor!
Thanks man! Living the dream
What a great day it was! You got some of the best wind early on, but there was nice light winds in the middle of the day and some fine late afternoon breezes as well! Thanks for the video.
It was a great day!
"Puts a smile on my face". Hardly surprising, beautiful boat, beautiful surroundings. Put a smile on my face, too. Made me subscribe, so keep posting. Happy sailing from England
Thank you so much!
Great to see Wildflower in her natural environment. The seat cushions look great and comfortable. It must make a real difference. Great video and lovely scenery👍
Thanks! Love the cushions.
Wow! I'm impressed and encouraged. Thank you so much for sharing Daniel!!
You're welcome!
Excellent Daniel. Thanks for sharing👍
Glad you liked it!
Essential. The coaming hits right at the bottom of your ribs, super uncomfortable. Sitting on the hatches is not exactly very comfortable either!
Can't wait to try them!
Hello, I just bought a dinghy sailer and hope to sail tomales bay in a couple of weeks. What pants and shoes are you wearing that let you walk into the water like that? Do you have any recommendations on what to wear?
Certainly depends on the boat, but for me I need to get above mid calf to launch and retrieve my boat from the beach. So I wear Gil high water proof sailing boots and Seal Skin brand waterproof breathable wool socks. Love it. I also have synthetic pants that dry quickly, and wear merino wool underwear in case it gets wet. I wear Marino wool shirts and mid layer on a cold day. If really cold or stormy I wear a Gil dry suit. My new PFD is a Baltic Sandhamm vest from Sweden. Just love it.
It looks just like the boat I learned on.
Looks like a beautiful day. You saw some of my friends at the Marshall beach camp out! I could not come out this year. We were out earlier in the month, with very blustery day, with gusts over 20 mph.
Such a good and simple boat!
Indeed it is. I love it.
One thing that comes across in all your videos, Daniel, is your supreme confidence in Wildflower. You look completely at ease. Great to watch👍
Thanks! Agreed. Much time at the helm and practice makes me very comfortable. I know what she will do. And the more I sail her, the more I am impressed with the her design. She takes care of you.
I like this. I purchased a scamp, which just needs some rigging details. Super excited for your scamp adventures (and mine).
I love my SCAMP!
Excellent Daniel. Thanks for posting👍
You betcha!
Looks great. Would you go for 3 weeks of holiday with 2 person in this boat?
I never have. It would be tight. But I could do it with my wife I think.
Git that boat up here to Seattle next year!
Thant is the plan! Salish 2025!
Great video Daniel. I can’t see enough of your jaunts. Looking forward to being able make similar memories👍
So kind. Can’t wait to see your boat out there!
Thanks for video much appreciated. Did you even consider under seat steering and why did you rule it out. I would imagine this would have less strain on the neck but never ridden one.
I just thought it would be easier to learn the standard bars. Mine go way back, so my arms are quite relaxed and my neck is in a good position.
Excellent Daniel. Thank you for sharing👍
I’m delighted!
B Frank was the first SCAMP I got to see up close, when Steve Haines brought her to Mystic Seaport for the WoodenBoat Festival, maybe 10 years ago. It's good to see her still going strong!
Her current owner is having a lovely time! Good sailor too.
It always fun yelling to fellow boaters, trying to tell them what you are sailing.
Grand day out for lads! Was there a couple of weeks ago. A shame about the wee house on the pier burning down. Great design for these waters.
The back of your front fender comes closer to the ground than any front fender I have ever seen which gives you and your bike full protection from water and debris streaming off the front wheel.
Yes. And with my legs up in the air the bike is dry over puddles etc.
Where can I see the “bleeder” setup?
Ah. If you look at around 7:14 of this video ua-cam.com/video/El0TfU14jxs/v-deo.htmlsi=YAAeA1-SecxjeoH4 you will see it. The “bleater” is a line that traps the boom against the mast on starboard tack. I used a line tied to a pad eye where my downhaul is aft around the mast to a jam cleat with fairlead mounted on the boom.
I just bought a secondhand 2023 Speedmachine in excellent condition. However, right now I am still struggling with learning driving it. Your tip how to takeoff from zero was very helpful for me.
Terrific! It took me a while too. But the “mash and go” works well. Practice…
Thanks for making a movie of the fun you & Thom had yesterday. Those SCAMPS are just made for Tomales Bay. They sure do handle those conditions with aplomb. Go SCAMPERS!
Yeah baby!,

Hi, thanks for the vid and info. Did you get knee pain when changing over to recumbents?
No. But it sure took a long time for me to get used to it
Enjoyed you talking about Kestral, a Montgomery 15, small boat big water. But more recent videos have you enjoying a SCAMP. Can you compare the two? SAMP replace M15? Fantastic to see 4 up on a SCAMP - M15 good for 2-3? Thanks for sharing.
Sure. I loved my M15, but sold it after I built my SCAMP. M15 is built like a tank. Sails well. Can take 3 but 2 better. But, trailer and boat were 1500 pounds. A handful in the driveway. You can’t beach her or launch from the beach. No way to reduce headsail in a blow unless you have a furler, which adds additional complications. SCAMP plus trailer around 800 lbs. Can be launched and retrieved from the beach. Despite smaller boat, nicer cockpit. Easier to rig and handle with unstayed mast and single sail. Very easy to reef. I day sail mostly in Tomales Bay. For my uses SCAMP is better. So many other things to say, but for brevity that is the gist of it.
@@dndrich Thank you! That affirmed a lot of what I was thinking. Can I ask how long your SCAMP build was (I know, I know - sort of like asking your fav ice cream flavor. Different for everyone). Super helpful about weight. I thought M15 had a dry weight of under 800lbs. 1500lbs is to close to my tow capacity for comfort. That was a HUGE discovery, thank you.
I can tell you my M15 must have weighed at least 850 by itself. My SCAMP build took 4 1/2 years, but I really dawdled. I was working full time, had an injury in 2017 that delayed me like a year, and I did not know what I was doing! I think a dedicated builder could finish one in under a year. There are many resources to help with this. There is a great Facebook group for SCAMP builders. The designer and another expert, Howard Rice, are there for all kinds of help. And there are SCAMP build camps in many locations throughout the year. I love my SCAMP.
Beautiful SCAMP! How are you mounting your camera for this video?
I am using an Insta360x3 with a cheap mount that clips to the transom or the combing.
Your camera operator is on their game. Your boat is pretty, and you moved her well on the first trip.
Thanks! That was a wonderful day. I have since sailed her so many more times! Love my SCAMP
Great video Daniel.a real tonic. Thanks for keeping the dream alive👍
You betcha!!
Great day, great movie, great memories! You got this movie posted quickly!
😃😍

Great to see Wildflower from the air Daniel. Must have been a devil to keep the boat on track and fly the drone👍
Oh yeah. Not easy! That is why I picked a light day
Nice job with the launch, love your set up.
Thanks! I had it worked out for solo sailing
All these years later, still a great video. Hope you are still enjoying the boat.
She’s a great boat, but I sold her in 2020 after completing the build on my SCAMP.
This was a nice ride. ty for taking us along.
Come on you guys! Keep this up and it will become to popular! Our favorite place to sail and row.
The place was empty except for us!
Looks like a nice little day trip. Thanks for sharing.

I love boat camping on Tomales!
Oh yes
Increible¡¡ tantos artefactos para acampar en tan pequeño espacio del velerito. Amazing¡ Some many stuffs for camping into little sailing boat
¡Gracias! Estoy de acuerdo. El deseño es así.
FERNANDO form Mx Port Progreso. Beautiful sealing boat. But Capitan most not hit the beach or sand. Un simple cambio de dirección al viento para frenar y llegar suavemente a la playa.
Está playa tiene polvo muy suave. ¡Por eso!
love the Scamps!!
Thanks! Me too!
Swallow Yachts is a Welsh company, not English!
Thanks for sharing this excellent Scamp video!!
Glad you enjoyed it! You have had a few SCAMPs in your time too!
All of you are ashamed to show your cabin designs.
I’m not sure what this means? I no longer have this boat, but the cabin was fine for a 15 foot boat.
It means that if one shows the hull and cockpit of their boat, they should show the cabin. What are owners afraid of?@@dndrich
@@johnirby493 Well, that is where I keep the dead bodies, so I don't want to show them!! Actually, I am not really giving a tour of the boat. I'm just giving some memories and sailing enjoyment. So not showing the cabin is simply not on purpose particularly. Just nothing in there of interest to the sailing action. But if I were giving a boat tour, then yeah, I would show the inside of the boat!
It's not just you. Lots of UA-camrs who own relatively small sailboats do the same. To really get interested on a particular model, one needs to see what they would actually get. Again. The comment was not just about your video. @@dndrich
@@johnirby493 Gotcha. Well, I no longer have that boat. But the rest of my channel has video of the boat I built, a SCAMP. That is an open boat, so you can see what she has for sure!
