It is not uncommon for a steam loco that is over-filed the tender on the run at least you can get free coal

My grandmother grew up in a building next the train station in the 1930s in Little Canada in Lewiston, Maine, USA. When she was just 4 or 5 Her mother used to send her down to pick up the coal pieces that fell off the train to use in the stove.

Now if only there was still mainline steam in the USA…
