You know, I'm somewhat of a filmmaker myself.
Autumn, Loneliness, and what Her teaches us about Existentialism.
#filmanalysis #videoessay #commentary
This video explores the reflective beauty of autumn and its parallels with Spike Jonze’s Her. Through scenes of nature and solitude, I examine how the season's stillness mirrors themes of isolation, technology, and connection in the film.
How does modern love, shaped by technology, reflect our deeper existential struggles? What does Her (2013) teach us about Existentialism? How do we connect with both nature and ourselves?
Join me as I explore the contrast between loneliness and solitude, and how autumn and Her invite us to reflect on what it means to truly connect - with others and ourselves.

Have you ever felt the dissonance between who you think you are and how others perceive you? This strange feeling stems from the clash between our inner identity and the external image we project to the world. In this video essay, I will dive into how legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman masterfully explores this concept in his iconic film Persona. If you find this exploration intriguing, make su...

great video, looved the mention to sylvia plaths poem
Isn't this a bit flawed? Your structural elements " and then and then" are the plot. The supporting story, and the " why, what's, how" are the story?no?
loved the video! the analysis was so interesting to hear.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words :)

Thank you too! :)
this deserves a million views
That‘s so kind! Thank you :) Feel free to share it with anyone you think would like it. Maybe we won’t reach a million, but every view helps.
Nice try, you almost had me liking autumn there for a moment...- Nah beautiful work man. Self-reflection is something I could use more of, otherwise its distraction, distraction, distraction. Lots of food for thought here. Great breakdown of normally complicated philosophical concepts, and I might want to try watching Her again. Such a deep, magnificent film. (On a technical side great vid too. Easy to follow and it just works. Make more... In your own time of course.)
Thank you man. Taking a step back, figuring out where we are in life. We all need that moment. So glad you liked it :)
Great analysis and message! I also loved the narrative style in the first minute with the catchy music and beautiful shots a lot. More of that!
Thank you so much! <3 I definitely plan on doing more of that. Once time isn’t too much of an issue :D
I love nature! It’s so peaceful and relaxing. Love the message
I definitely need to watch this movie. Amazing explanation/insight
There‘s nothing quite like watching things grow, and then prepare for the frost. Nature truly is amazing
I highly recommend it! It’s one of my favorite films!
so good!
Thank you! :)
@@moviemellon btw I must say that I loved your insertion of Bergman's Persona into this -- I have already watched The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, so Persona is next
@bellamorts I can also highly recommend Cries and Whispers. Also great.
Good video, would just recommend lowering the music as it can be slightly distracting
Thanks for the advice! Will definitely check that for the future :)
I have always likened "Story" and "Plot" to "Strategy" and "Tactics." "Strategy" is "What Happens." Tactics are "How Things Happen." (Example: Strategy: "We're going to win the battle by taking the hill." Tactics: "We're going to take the hill by using a combination of light tanks, infantry and air support.") Likewise, Story is "What Happens," while Plot is "How/Why Things Happen." (Example: Story: "Joe saves his mother's house by paying off her mortgage." Tactics: "Joe gets the money to pay off his mother's mortgage by robbing a bank.")
@moviemellon How does sync licensing work?
Seems to me that the Story is encapsulated in the Logline - what is it about. The Plot is how the logline plays out.
So why do so many writing programs say exactly the opposite, that PLOT is the sequence of events and the story is who and why
The main issue with all of these definitions [mine included] is that they are all true in a sense. The PLOT is just another part of any STORY. There can’t be a PLOT without a STORY. And I agree, in hindsight I failed to mention that: Yes, a PLOT is also a sequence of events within a broader sequence of events. However, a plot serves to give context to a story. The STORY is the who and the what (Who is the character and What happens). The PLOT is the Why and the How (Why do these things happen and How will the STORY unfold). In the words of E.M. Forster: “The king died and then the queen died is a story. The king died, and then the queen died of grief, is a plot.” Another big issue with semantic theory like this is that definitions are prone to change due to conventional use. Since people started using the terms STORY and PLOT interchangeably, the meanings ultimately ended up bleeding into each other. (Other cases like this include the definition of ‘literally‘ being changed to also mean ‘figuratively/virtually‘ which used to be the exact opposite.)
A Great Philosophical video you speak on the silence. Yes First is silence and the speech comes later. The silence gives me the opportunity to think, evolve, compose and the speak about anything-and that anything becomes something like your this master piece video. Thanks Mellon
Thank you so much for your kind words! There really is something very special about cherishing silence from time to time. Not only do you get an opportunity to think, but also gives you a chance to truly observe the world around you.
Story is what is this about. Plot is what happens. Idk where this guy gets his intel.
"In a literary work, film, or other narrative, the plot is the sequence of events in which each event affects the next one through the principle of cause-and-effect. The causal events of a plot can be thought of as a series of events linked by the connector "and so"." Story is the series of events. Plot is the cause and effect sequence of a story. My intel comes from a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics and Literary Studies.
@@moviemellon I disagree and stand by my statement. Other than my questioning of your credentials and congratulations on that. Stories are survival information, either for the survival of the audience or in some causes the narrator. But that’s what a story is, information that benefits someone. So depending on what a story is about determines it’s utility or function the story has in it’s audience or narrators life. Plot is just the parts that make the chair. You only need enough plot to make your chair stand. To much plot that doesn’t service the story is a chair with a potato peeler attached to it. Not enough plot , you’re likely going to miss whatever point you’re trying to make. The point, plot, thesis , base, foundation, takeaway or “theme” of a story IS the story.
@@moviemellon and if you check and compare your claim to a actual story, your claim doesn’t hold up.
@@moviemellon and your quote just describes time.
It’s nice for you to stand by your statement, yet the differentiation I provided is the one that is used as a rule by millions of storytellers around the globe. This is not about opinions, this is about what is used as a guideline. You know… the… "official" definition. This is also disregarding the fact that you entirely disregard what I said in the video about Story and Plot being so tightly interwoven that one cannot really exist without the other.

There is a reason why Simon and Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence is meaningful to so many. It is a song about the inability of people to communicate with each other. Lost in the silence and isolation, left to consume content and commercialism. But I do understand the reasoning of your video, for me though staying silent is more out of fear to engage in communication, and staying inside my introverted self. I'm working on it though. This really is a good piece, and I know you are talking more of the noise all around us and not paying attention to the silent parts. So, thank you for making me think more about Silence. ❤
It’s impossible to do justice to the power and value of silence. Especially in a mere 4 1/2 minute long video. Though it’s kind of ironic, isn’t it? The age where communication is easier than it has ever been before is also the age where communication is lost on us all. Thank you for your thoughtful comment!
@@moviemellon I have found myself laughing often from the irony in the world around us, if I don't I will start crying.
@@jenniferbauman It really would be funny if it wasn't so sad. :D
Silence can be so powerful
It's something we are too scared to embrace, yet impossible to escape.
And its sometimes preferable compared to certain people.
Great summary of the difference of plot and story. The graph of the Shrek story was very useful.
broo I don’t think my brain is made for videos with slow shots like this haha, but besides that very nice!
The story is the train going from one point to the other. The plot, Is the passengers giving life to the story. Without the passengers, the train is just a lifeless machine going from place to place.
Oh that’s a wonderful analogy! I love it.
Great analogy. I've copied your analogy and saved it for future reference. Thanks!
Great analogy that’s why train movies do so well
Thank you so much! This helped me look deeper at my narratives and understand how to build them. Much love!

Thank you so much for the kind words! :) I‘m glad that I was able to inspire someone with something I made. That’s amazing!
Yet a story can really be anything, depending by the intellectual level of the reader.
Maybe not exactly the intellectual level, but rather creative capacity of the individual.
The scene starting at 1:56 makes me think of how the little girl in the background (the past) playing is the girl in the forefront (the present) but instead of playing she's too busy on her phone. Very interesting. I wonder what he life will be like in the future we cannot yet see. I'll have to look more into Experimental Documentaries. ❤
That's honestly a lovely thought to have. The idea of having a sort of temporal divide within the shot. Questions that can only be answered without certainty. Let's see where life will take us. If you are into Experimental Documentaries I can recommend films like Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio or Chantal Akerman’s "D’est".
@@moviemellon oh yeah! Why didn't I think of Ackerman? 🤦🏻♀️ I've seen some of her films. Thank you for the suggestions.
You may also want to look into Stan Brakhage‘s stuff too. But there are so many other directiors that are worth checking out tbh.
@@moviemellon You should see my watchlist 😅 I need to watch more movies.

A really well executed way to layout what both of these mean when running parallell to each other
Even after putting in a lot of research and trying to explain the topic as thoroughly as I was able to at the time I still struggle to fully grasp the difference of both hahaha
The Future of Storytelling provides a similar definition of story, but some writers such as indie-author Brandon McNulty argue that plot is the "what" of a story whereas story is composed four other parts: characters, stakes, structure, and setting (+ point of view). Plot vs Story | Know The Difference (Fiction Writing Advice): ua-cam.com/video/8v5NXlgBOwQ/v-deo.html The Future of Storytelling 1-3 | Story vs. Plot: ua-cam.com/video/TsTcBajjsLg/v-deo.html While I agree that a story is the causal and chronological sequence of events, I think story should be defined as the "why" and "who" rather than the "what". I think the "what" or content of events make up the plot as the Future of Storytelling explained.
This is a very nice and thoughtful addition to the video, thank you very much. It is very difficult to thoroughly explain these two concepts, especially since there are so many definitions - some contradictory. To quote McNulty, there is no rock-solid official definition. I think the definition of 'story' doesn't exclusively have to be either the "what" or the "why". As I said in my video the relation between story and plot is so tightly connected to each other, that it may very well be both "what" and "why" (to an extent). However, I still think that the definition makes the most sense if we phrase it as such: "What is the story and why does it progress from A to B?" But in the end, it's all a matter of phrasing, really.
And McNulty is absolutely right ! The story is the why The plot is the who what when where how James shoot mike and then mike jump behind the a car = PLOT / A SIMPLE SEQUENCE OF " EVENTS " James shoot mike because after giving him so much opportunities to surrender james finally understand than nothing will stop mike = STORY / WHY THE EVENTS HAPPEN If story was a simple sequence of events we would have substories and not subplots ! Don't trust neither me or neither this guy video just make your own research on PLOT driven STORY and CHARACTER driven STORY. You will understand the function of the plot more easily and therefore understand the difference between plot and story ! You can also see it in STORYBOARDING E.G what is a scene and what is a sequence the scene is the plot and the sequence is the story. Peace & good luck on your journey
Amazing! I have an exam today and it helped me very much, thank you!
Hey I‘m glad I could help! Thank you :)
I used to think the two terms were interchangeable, but now I know the difference between them and I have a better understanding of how telling a story works, this is truly a phenomenal video. Surprised this doesn't have more views though, your production value is something I could only wish to do in Filmora.
Hey there! Thank you so much for your kind words, they do mean so much to me. I am really glad the effort is appreciated. It did take me one hell of a time to edit though. So there’s a lot of effort and care put into it :)
You may think so but you are actually wrong as is the guy in the video ! Man props to you both for this. I've always loved storyboarding, and I respect the diversity and explorative nature of your works man. Props. Did you write the Voice Over yourself? Good stuff. Hit way too real to home hehe
The storyboards are a passion I found not too long ago! And the animation was just the cherry on top. I wrote, drew and directed everything by myself :) With this one, I tried to capture the feeling when I last visited my childhood hometown. So… it’s absolutely very close to home
This challenge really helped me just gush out inspiration and not judge myself about writing. It's actually a chill challenge and thanks for making that discord because I get to meet other people there too. Did you write this live? Props to that too. Also I would nope the heck out of answering that doorbell. I would love to see a short like this because the viewer would be WAITING for something to happen. This would be a good nice mind-screw hehe I think I want to try this challenge again hehe
Whenever I make one of the 60-Day-Update videos, I write the scripts live. Just a couple of minutes edited out, to not end up with a 40min video lmao By all means! Go ahead and write! By now, writing has become somewhat of a type of therapy for me.
