    Problem I see with that installation is you are adhering that cheap ass underlayment that comes pre attached to the planks and is suspect to come off over time , so then it's glued to the tread and not the plank

    I hate edge caps/bull nose whatevers. We have those on our stairs from when we bought our house. One was cracked and broken when we bought it and few more have already broken, too. Horrible product.

    You can take another board and use it as a cheater. Butt it up to the gap and run it on top of another board with a marker. and the lock will give you your expansion gap. I never use tape measures on things like that and you get way more accurate cuts

    I'm the stair king in my county. Start at the bottom and work up the riser should sit on the tread. I don't use any nail either. Sika pro adhesive, and a commercial flooring hot melt gun . Never use that worthless track it comes with. Also use a stair stencil to get risers and treads to fit perfect. Very little caulk need. Nothing to hide. The hot glue will avoid you using tape that doesn't hold the entire lip of the nosing flush. Not criticizing your work. Job looks good. Just throwing out some elite knowledge. I've installed stairs for 21 yrs. Also depending on the product you will need to add a bead of adhesive directly behind the nosing otherwise you will have squeaks everytime you Walk up and down the steps. There isn't any need for expansion on stairs. Only the landing

      Stair king, at 60 w/ 45 yrs in, 1/2 of that comment is BS. the industry has obviously taught you some bad habits and some that are just not true. starting from the bottom, risers go first and glue and screws (in the old days, box nails) from the back into the rear of the tread is correct. It put the joint straight down instead of straight in, which at some point will be at eye level. thats #1.

    Nosings are not secured to the bullnose with fasteners (Headless pin). They will come out over time (Even trip hazard). Landing planks are not glued to the subfloor. They will squick and make noise. Overall poor job, I hope you are not a professional floor layer.

  • @wtdudley05

    Have you had issues with adhesion when leaving the padding on and if you're using a glue or sealant, won't that affect expansion? Oh last question. Does vinyl need room for expansion? Thanks! I enjoyed t he video.

    I think the overlapping stair noses are terrible...they squeak and click all over the place. Honestly, the flush stair nose is the ONLY way to go. I've learned this the hard way in our first home. I will forever remember how disappointed I was every time I stepped on those cheap feeling overlap stair noses. The only overlap stair nose that should be used the the very top of the stairs only to allow for movement if there is flooding upstairs also.

      What would you use?

    • @Messerwon
      @Messerwon 11 місяців тому

      @@weekendhomeprojects almost exclusively hardwood only. Stairs take a beating compared to normal foot traffic on flooring surfaces. That would be my first and pretty much only recommendation. You’d choose a wood and stain to match the rest of the flooring which don’t necessarily have to be hardwood to last. You could also consider tile but the expense and expertise level required for installing tile is usually cost prohibitive.

    Always start from the bottom up. Install threads , pin nail both back and front for the xtra security then install risers and stair nose will cover nail holes on both sides. But that’s just me, but overall, beautiful job.

  • @0spanishfly0

    Looks great!! Love the two tone. Question…. I’m doing the same thing to my stairs. Did you leave gap spaces on each end for expansion? And how much if you did?? What did you use to cover the gaps??? Caulking??? And my flooring comes with a padding on the bottom. Is it good just to glue it to the wood of the stairs?? And last, what about the “Underlayment?” It’s not needed on satires and landings???
