Sailing El Jaleo
United States
Приєднався 11 лип 2020
I am an upper 40 something individual who became disillusioned with modern life in my early 40's. After some soul searching I realized that I had turned my back on the dreams of my youth trying to clutch at the false dreams of the current rat race most of the world lives by. When I was younger I wanted to accomplish 4 things in life; achieve becoming a scuba diving instructor, go to university and obtain an engineering degree, sail around the world, and go to university to become a marine biologist. After achieving my first two goals I became seduced by the easy life of swimming with the current. When I turned 45 I gave it all up to complete the dreams of my youth. I sold everything and bought a 40yr old sailboat. I've spent the last few years upgrading it to a completely electric boat (aside from the diesel engine.) This is a chronicle of the travels of my crew and I and the upgrades/modifications we've made to our new home and protector, El Jaleo.

That is a very reasonable haul out. The marina where I am docked wants well over $1200 for haul out and splash
Schnikies, that seems really high, then again I've been spoiled by Delaware City Marina's reasonable rates so I don't really have a feel for market rates on services.
I grew up in Great Bridge, after 34 years in the USNavy, but back home. If you ever find yourself in great bridge again and need anything contact me
Thanks for your kind offer!
Coolest alterantor is in my Damen. It charge 240Amp for 540AhLFP and the temp is only 42C or 107F ua-cam.com/video/9CrBNP1dqzs/v-deo.html
Great video, very enjoyable! I love watching your crew - they look so happy and well behaved. You made some good points on the bridge strike. I am a new boater, planning to follow you down later this year, so your take on it gave me some things to think about. Thanks!
I'm glad you enjoyed the vid. Don't let the crew fool you they are a true brat pack!
You have the right attitude! It is hard out there, especially when you are alone!
Love it! Reminds me of the Sabotage video! Lol
Wondering why you didn't do the Dismal? No Scheel Keel?
I have never done the Dismal Swamp Canal for a few reasons, the first being that Atlantic Yacht Basin (Chesapeake, VA) in one of my three main refueling points between Delaware City and St. Augustine. Atlantic Yacht Basin has the best prices for diesel on the East Coast. I could always backtrack to the canal entrance which wouldn't be that big of a deal but I've heard horror stories about the duckweed clogging raw water intakes once in the canal. The sonar charts show that the depth is only six feet, we draw five and a half feet and even a bit more when fully loaded, that's too close to give it a try, we're pretty risk averse.
I am planning the ICW as well from Long Island to Florida. I really appreciate your excellent videos and watching your puppies as well :-). Looking forward to more of your great content - thank you!!
Excellent, I love the trip, it is always a great time. Safe travels!
I keep taking notes for my next trip down the ICW. Thank you for your videos!
Safe travels! Glad you enjoy.
That's a cute pup!
She's quite a handful!
🎉merry Christmas 🎀
Merry Christmas!
SOCK - us - tea.
Did u talk to the guy ? YOu said there was some profanity involved. Are boaters generally friendly giving each other a wave as u pass, or just everyone minding their own business like on a city sidewalk ?
He was very friendly, we exchanged pleasantries when he passed me before the bridge and we had a very brief chat after he struck the bridge. He certainly was not swearing at me, just the frustration of the situation after he struck the bridge which was understandable. We didn't have long to talk after the bridge strike as the bridge operator opened the bridge and I had to get thru as to not impede motor traffic. In general boaters, specifically sailboaters and cabin cruisers are very friendly, other boaters can be a bit hit or miss but I wave at every single boat that passes, it is generally a very friendly community.
It's pronounced Sock-uh-stee. I went to Socastee high school back in 1970-72.
Thanks for the heads up!! In navionics they have the pronunciation as sock-ass-tee, I'll see if I can change it.
I have difficulty feeling bad for this guy as I think he should have been a lot more careful. Anyway just found your channel, great videos, thank you very much! Happy holidays and safe travels!
I have a lot of empathy for him. I have put myself in crappy positions before, like the time I did an offshore passage and stayed awake for 32hrs, I was hallucinating so badly I was seeing evil leprechauns on the front of the boat, it was not great and I haven't done it since, that's why I stick to the ICW for now. In the morning when I first saw this gentleman he was coming in from the Little River inlet, he may have been awake all night, I don't know. Either way he made a mistake which we've all done. I don't know how it happened, on the surface it seems like it should never happen but I have no idea what his state of mind was at the moment. Just my two cents. Thanks for coming along on the journey, Happy Holidays!
@sailing_el_jaleo true, you make a very good point! Take care and looking forward to your next video!
Vice grips are not crimps. Please get a clue before you harm yourself or someone else. Can’t watch this dangerous amateur low quality work. It shouldn’t be any where near a boat. I can only hope you learn and improve your standards
Thanks for stopping by, Merry Christmas!
@ thanks, merry Christmas to you too.
Merry Christmas! Safe travels! Murrells Inlet SC!
Merry Christmas to you and yours! The Waccamaw is my favorite place on the east coast, so beautiful!
Great videos. Merry Christmas!
Thx! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!
Wow! What a weird break!
Thank you for the video! It gives me hope that I can do it all, too...
You can do it!!
Shiba?
The pups? They are Alaskan Klee Kais, one full size, one miniature size and one toy size.
Fixa flat works in inflatables got to roll the boat around a bit.
@@ufodude1000 I already have it patched but I’ll keep that trick in mind for next time, thx!
I don't know what I was thinking, my logic was exactly backwards on the Alligator Bridge opening, of course emergency personnel could get thru if the bridge was closed, I'm too used to thinking from a boating perspective I guess ;)
I wondered about that
Love watching your videos. I just brought my first boat up the opposite direction. Seeing your videos makes me smile!
How very kind, thank you. I hope your trip went well! Fair winds :)
Was just looking on line says closed 11-22-24 any info?
I know Deb sold the marina last year, I haven't been back or spoken to the new owners so I have no idea. Perhaps they are relaunching under a new name?
Yet there is no sailing at all
This time of the year the name of the game, for us at least, is to get as far south as fast as is safely possible. Unfortunately we do not control the weather.
I wanna use the 300ah battery for powering 4 oil cooler with fan with 2 oil pump for a race car ,I am gonna use the first battery to the sec 300ah battery and a isolator with a over charge protector is that a good idea?
I'm afraid that is beyond my expertise, which is quite limited.
Heat the washers up with a torch you can reuse them .and they are most likely copper.
Thanks for the info and the tip, I’ll add that to the mental rolodex! 😃
Beautiful song❤
Blast from the past!!!! I am still here watching all episodes! When I finished my trip my job back at the marina took over again! Awesome journey El Jaleo!
Glad to hear you are alive and kickin'! Are you heading south this year?
@@sailing_el_jaleo I am not. Probably sail around the Pamlico region a bit. Just bought a 36 foot houseboat!
@crazyNCman That’s exciting! Hope we get to see her in new videos!! 😃
I ordered a few cans of Dinty Moore beef stew and they screwed up the order and sent 4 cases of the big cans. I never want to see beef stew again.
Lolz, by the end of the yearly trip I’m usually pretty sick of all the stuff I brought with 🤣
I feel better about how my boat looks now.. lol it looks about like that.
Lolz, as per usual I bought too much food, It’ll be a month before I have room to store it all!
I hope you're doing well friend. I finally settled on my boat in Bridgeton. Blackbeards just didn't sound like the right place. You ever get down New Bern way I'll treat you to a steak dinner. Me and my mom. She moved here and I'm trying to make up for a lot of years of drinking my ass off. Please keep making the vids. It might take me some time to actually get the balls enough to venture out.. but I will.
Glad you found a good spot, take your time, you’ll know when you’re ready to head out. Hope all is well in your world!!
Thanks for the depth and explanation of all the items.
I’m sure your busy, but let me know if you want to get a beer. You had me guessing there for a sec on how you made it to Lake Michigan that fast. Lol
I 100% would have but I’m already back in DE, it was a quick trip.
How loud is the Silent X? Can you hear it while you are sleeping?
Since I used the deck as the main lateral support there is a slight vibration that I can hear in high wind. It is on my list to remove the generator and drill out the hole a bit so I can insulate it with a layer of rubber to eliminate the vibration. I cannot hear the wind generator itself when I’m sleeping but I am a heavy sleeper.
I have a 20hp Tohatsu (98lbs) on a 14 foot Bris. Enjoyed your video.
Thinking of you!! ❤
How come we never see clips of you swimming?
Lol, I don't go in the water anymore. I grew up on a lake and was a scuba instructor in my 20's, I spent the first half of my life in the water, I have no desire to go in the water anymore. The last time I went swimming was in the Cayman Islands approx 8-9yrs ago and that was coerced. I'm not sure I'll ever go swimming again. I love the water, just not being immersed in it.
You must not have looked for an anchorage, having sailed the lower bay for years,I can tell you there are hundreds of anchorage’s in the lower bay
There are a lot of them in the Hampton area but most of them in the Mobjack Bay area are too far away for them to be of use to us. Our problem is our low travel speed of 3.7knts which drops to below 2knts when running against the tide or against wind. Most sheltered anchorages in Mobjack Bay are at a minimum 5hrs out of the way which makes them impractical for us. If you own a boat that can travel at reasonable speeds then there are lots of anchorages. Unfortunately we are on the slowest vessel in existence 😃
What kind of pint did you use? I have a similar boat with a fiberglass bottom. I am wondering if I should paint the fiber glass too. The boat was free but needs some repair...
I used Pettit inflatable boat bottom paint. You can use it on fiberglass but not aluminum.
@@sailing_el_jaleo Thank you for the information
@@NathanCampbellGuitarist No problem, it has held up really well. I did not recoat it last summer and even after 2yrs of use it did well. I pulled it out a few days ago (after 9mos in the water) and there were some barnacles that came off easily but there was no algae or other growth. I plan on repainting it this summer.
Great videos and narration, very informative. What is your air draft? bridge clearance?
We like at least 60' of clearance, we could squeak under 57' if we had to but our VHF antenna would be touching.
Agree on Carolina Beach anchoring. I dragged last time there. 65' mantis that never drags. Safe travels.
That is the only place I've ever dragged, slipped about 10' which actually saved me from getting hit by the boat anchored in front of me. Safe travels to you as well!
I’ve been looking forward to seeing this video. Thanks!
Hopefully there is something in there that is interesting and not just a bunch of drivel 😀
Hi, your video is well filmed and the music is wonderful. A point to consider is the pronunciation of EDisTo River. The emphasis is on the first and third syllable.
Thank you for the clarification, much appreciated!! I’m slowly getting better at pronunciation thanks to viewer’s help! Sooo many rivers to keep straight 😃
I dunno what that other commenter was smoking but this video is the opposite of painful, at least from the viewers perspective. I'm sure it was quite painful to film. As for your vampire Irishman voice, I think it deserves a permanent place in your intro. :)
Thanks for the vote of confidence! Although to be fair some of the early episodes are pretty bed 😆
Cheers, be safe out there.
ok this is painful
A lot has changed in 4yrs, unfortunately there are a lot of cringe worthy videos, I'm a pretty cringe worthy person, watch at your own risk 😅 If you're looking for the cool kids you won't find any here 😆
@@sailing_el_jaleo no judgment here ! ours are worse so far ! lol
You are exploring some magical places. Thanks for sharing and for giving us some interesting facts about these places. Stay safe and happy sailing❤
Thanks Linda, I hope all is well in your world!
Wish I was still down there! I would do a fiberglass dodger and hard top. Canvas on a boat is just to expensive for how long it lasts.
