Sailing El Jaleo
United States
Приєднався 11 лип 2020
I am an upper 40 something individual who became disillusioned with modern life in my early 40's. After some soul searching I realized that I had turned my back on the dreams of my youth trying to clutch at the false dreams of the current rat race most of the world lives by. When I was younger I wanted to accomplish 4 things in life; achieve becoming a scuba diving instructor, go to university and obtain an engineering degree, sail around the world, and go to university to become a marine biologist. After achieving my first two goals I became seduced by the easy life of swimming with the current. When I turned 45 I gave it all up to complete the dreams of my youth. I sold everything and bought a 40yr old sailboat. I've spent the last few years upgrading it to a completely electric boat (aside from the diesel engine.) This is a chronicle of the travels of my crew and I and the upgrades/modifications we've made to our new home and protector, El Jaleo.
S04E42 End of the Road? (Hydrolocked Engine Repair)
This week I discuss the two times that EJ's engine became hydrolocked during our early cruising season and the process that I went thru to fix the issue.

Blast from the past!!!! I am still here watching all episodes! When I finished my trip my job back at the marina took over again! Awesome journey El Jaleo!
Glad to hear you are alive and kickin'! Are you heading south this year?
@@sailing_el_jaleo I am not. Probably sail around the Pamlico region a bit. Just bought a 36 foot houseboat!
@crazyNCman That’s exciting! Hope we get to see her in new videos!! 😃
I ordered a few cans of Dinty Moore beef stew and they screwed up the order and sent 4 cases of the big cans. I never want to see beef stew again.
Lolz, by the end of the yearly trip I’m usually pretty sick of all the stuff I brought with 🤣
I feel better about how my boat looks now.. lol it looks about like that.
Lolz, as per usual I bought too much food, It’ll be a month before I have room to store it all!
I hope you're doing well friend. I finally settled on my boat in Bridgeton. Blackbeards just didn't sound like the right place. You ever get down New Bern way I'll treat you to a steak dinner. Me and my mom. She moved here and I'm trying to make up for a lot of years of drinking my ass off. Please keep making the vids. It might take me some time to actually get the balls enough to venture out.. but I will.
Glad you found a good spot, take your time, you’ll know when you’re ready to head out. Hope all is well in your world!!
Thanks for the depth and explanation of all the items.
I’m sure your busy, but let me know if you want to get a beer. You had me guessing there for a sec on how you made it to Lake Michigan that fast. Lol
I 100% would have but I’m already back in DE, it was a quick trip.
How loud is the Silent X? Can you hear it while you are sleeping?
Since I used the deck as the main lateral support there is a slight vibration that I can hear in high wind. It is on my list to remove the generator and drill out the hole a bit so I can insulate it with a layer of rubber to eliminate the vibration. I cannot hear the wind generator itself when I’m sleeping but I am a heavy sleeper.
I have a 20hp Tohatsu (98lbs) on a 14 foot Bris. Enjoyed your video.
Thinking of you!! ❤
How come we never see clips of you swimming?
Lol, I don't go in the water anymore. I grew up on a lake and was a scuba instructor in my 20's, I spent the first half of my life in the water, I have no desire to go in the water anymore. The last time I went swimming was in the Cayman Islands approx 8-9yrs ago and that was coerced. I'm not sure I'll ever go swimming again. I love the water, just not being immersed in it.
You must not have looked for an anchorage, having sailed the lower bay for years,I can tell you there are hundreds of anchorage’s in the lower bay
There are a lot of them in the Hampton area but most of them in the Mobjack Bay area are too far away for them to be of use to us. Our problem is our low travel speed of 3.7knts which drops to below 2knts when running against the tide or against wind. Most sheltered anchorages in Mobjack Bay are at a minimum 5hrs out of the way which makes them impractical for us. If you own a boat that can travel at reasonable speeds then there are lots of anchorages. Unfortunately we are on the slowest vessel in existence 😃
What kind of pint did you use? I have a similar boat with a fiberglass bottom. I am wondering if I should paint the fiber glass too. The boat was free but needs some repair...
I used Pettit inflatable boat bottom paint. You can use it on fiberglass but not aluminum.
@@sailing_el_jaleo Thank you for the information
@@NathanCampbellGuitarist No problem, it has held up really well. I did not recoat it last summer and even after 2yrs of use it did well. I pulled it out a few days ago (after 9mos in the water) and there were some barnacles that came off easily but there was no algae or other growth. I plan on repainting it this summer.
Great videos and narration, very informative. What is your air draft? bridge clearance?
We like at least 60' of clearance, we could squeak under 57' if we had to but our VHF antenna would be touching.
Agree on Carolina Beach anchoring. I dragged last time there. 65' mantis that never drags. Safe travels.
That is the only place I've ever dragged, slipped about 10' which actually saved me from getting hit by the boat anchored in front of me. Safe travels to you as well!
I’ve been looking forward to seeing this video. Thanks!
Hopefully there is something in there that is interesting and not just a bunch of drivel 😀
Hi, your video is well filmed and the music is wonderful. A point to consider is the pronunciation of EDisTo River. The emphasis is on the first and third syllable.
Thank you for the clarification, much appreciated!! I’m slowly getting better at pronunciation thanks to viewer’s help! Sooo many rivers to keep straight 😃
I dunno what that other commenter was smoking but this video is the opposite of painful, at least from the viewers perspective. I'm sure it was quite painful to film. As for your vampire Irishman voice, I think it deserves a permanent place in your intro. :)
Thanks for the vote of confidence! Although to be fair some of the early episodes are pretty bed 😆
Cheers, be safe out there.
ok this is painful
A lot has changed in 4yrs, unfortunately there are a lot of cringe worthy videos, I'm a pretty cringe worthy person, watch at your own risk 😅 If you're looking for the cool kids you won't find any here 😆
@@sailing_el_jaleo no judgment here ! ours are worse so far ! lol
You are exploring some magical places. Thanks for sharing and for giving us some interesting facts about these places. Stay safe and happy sailing❤
Thanks Linda, I hope all is well in your world!
Wish I was still down there! I would do a fiberglass dodger and hard top. Canvas on a boat is just to expensive for how long it lasts.
How about nerding out on the degaussing setup at the submarines on the way out!
Those are very cool, they have them in Norfolk as well. When I went by Kings Bay this trip they had a sub out front with several hull panels removed and one missile silo door open, it was very cool. I didn't have my good camera out and I couldn't grab it due to the patrol boats but I did get some quick snaps with the phone although they're not that great. If you've never been thru Norfolk by boat you should take a run up there, you'd love it!
Nerding out on the paper mill! I love it! Fernandina is a great town.
I think I have watched all your videos! Watched many of them several times while navigating the ICW.
I hope they were at least mildly entertaining :) Now that you've been back for a bit are you thinking about hitting the ICW again next year or are you done with that route?
@@sailing_el_jaleo Next time I would like to go on the outside. I would only do ICW if I had someone with me. Staying on the helm all day is rough!
@@crazyNCmanIt is a brutal slog, then add Chesapeake Bay on top of it and a few months back on land doing boat projects is a nice change of pace afterwards ;)
Looks like you're living the life you set out for! Very happy you're still going strong!
Thanks, we're doing well! Hope all is well out West!
After my run up and down the ICW I have whole new level of respect for your journey on El Jaleo. It is not easy to travel that far at those speeds day after day! I am glad I did it, not sure if I would do it again. Trip back was great though. Fernandina Beach FL to Washington NC in 13 days!
It is a long slog for sure but we do it pretty casually which makes it easier. Every year we leave a bit earlier, warm weather while heading south makes it much more enjoyable. You made really good time on your way home!!
Some mad boat driving skills! So that is a Jason 36? Did you add tanks to it? Seems like 42HP would do pretty good on that boat.
The Jason's were originally spec'd to be 34.5' but the builder, Miller Marine, made a few that are an extra half a foot, El Jaleo is one of them, which gives her a higher bow which I like. It was originally spec'd for a 52hp engine with a 27gal fuel tank. Frank, original owner, built her with a 42hp engine and put in an extra fuel tank to expand the capacity to 65gal. I only run her around 2,000rpm which is the sweet spot for fuel efficiency. She is 17,000lb empty and she is in the 23-24,000lb range when fully loaded.
That sucks you lost the camera! I think videos like that are interesting. Would have been good so don't give up on it.
I want to have that glass smooth water going through there! Yesterday I did from Buckhead(right after Hell Gate) to St Simons Island and it was not a pleasant day! St Catherine Sound...rough as can be, Sapelo Sound...rough as can be... and so were the next two. Waiting out high winds now at anchor then hopefully tomorrow cross into FL.
Dang, you're hauling arse!! Those little sounds gan be a real bugger if you catch them on the wrong day! We've been hanging out at Metanzas Inlet for 4-5 weeks now. You'll be passing us soon! How far south do you plan on going?
@@sailing_el_jaleo St Augustine is the goal.
@@crazyNCman There is a good anchorage right beside the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge. There is a free dock right next to the Vilano Beach Pier where you can park for up to 4hrs. There is a good Publix grocery & liquor stores about a half mile away. I usually anchor and dinghy over to the free dock but you can take your big boat in as well. It's a good spot to provision. There is also a marina store right next to the pier, I haven't gone in but it's pretty big if you need any boat supplies/parts.
@@sailing_el_jaleo I will check it out. Trying to plan my next move. I see the weather is decent for some of tomorrow but the people anchored next to me say the next week is going to be risky.
@@crazyNCman Yeah, down here we've got some lower temps and high wind rolling in over the next 3-4 days.
That is crazy current. Lucky you didn't get in between the fenders and turned sideways!
It was tense for a few moments but I eased back very slowly, it could have been a disaster. It's all good :)
I tend to chose the easy anchor spots. Still it the task mode myself since I have to go back to work in March or April. I was thinking about that yesterday. This trip would have been way more enjoyable if I did not have to go back. Next year I am not going back! ....don't you wish you had a nice, light 9.9 outboard! lol
Traveling on a schedule does stink, hopefully next year you can break free 😉 The 15hp is darn heavy and I’m pretty weak when it comes to muscling stuff, that’s why I only put it on/off once per year 😀
This video helped a lot to see the cuts and know one was dredged. I did the last cut at low tide and it was sketchy!!!! Coosaw River was nice sailing.
Glad it helped!! You’re making good time! 🎉
@@sailing_el_jaleo Looks like a couple windy days coming with 30+ gusts. The fog has me at a morning in Beaufort, might extend it a couple more days until I head out to Savannah.
@@crazyNCman Better to play it safe! If you can time it so your going down the Beaufort River when the tide is going out and time the tide transition when you reach Port Royal Sound it will make crossing the sound much easier, the current in there can be strong. Then again you have a faster boat so it probably won't be an issue 😀
@@sailing_el_jaleo Thanks for the info. I am only slightly faster, 5 kts is pushing it for my little 13hp Yanmar, plus I am only 8000 lbs!
I watched this one again last night since it is my next leg of my journey. Footage has the rare three dogs on the bow! lol
very nice...thank Y'all for the boat ride
Good video! 1 year later how’s it holding up? I’m looking at getting one. Would you recommend?
I am happy with it. The only thing I would say is to temper expectations about its contribution to your overall power supply. It only puts out significant power in a pretty narrow band of wind speed but when you have the wind it’s great. I recently got stuck in Fernandina Beach for two weeks with 30-40mph winds and it supplied the majority of our power for those two weeks. It is a very good compliment to solar.
I stayed 3 days at Barefoot Landing! When I was leaving one of the workers was down at the dock. I said I am going to go before you guys kick me out. His response was stay as long as you want this time of year, we don't care. That was this morning. Quick trip to Bucksport to anchor out.
I’ve always wondered about stopping there, never have though. Glad it worked out! 😃
I cruised yesterday at El Jaleo speed from LIttle River Inlet to Barefoot Landing trying to keep on the schedule of the Barefoot swing bridge because I left way early. I got to the bridge and he said I would have opened it earlier for you! lol It was a nice break for my engine though.
Lolz, sounds like you're making good progress.
I should be there by now! Dang weather! Is there any depth outside the channel down there? I really want to do some sailing once I get out of NC and upper SC.
Cape Fear River is the last large body of water you’ll see if you stay on the ICW. There are lots of small sounds in GA but nothing really worthy of putting up the main.
@@sailing_el_jaleo Overall I find it hard to sail so far in the narrow channels with shallow water all around. Hopefully I get the headsail out for a while sometime soon.
@@crazyNCman I use the headsail anytime I can, it's nice to get a bit of boost. How far have you made it? I wasn't sure if your videos are in sync with the journey or behind real time.
@@sailing_el_jaleo I was almost in real time but fell behind. I have been stuck in Carolina Beach for 7 days now! Playing it very safe, probably to safe but I am in no hurry. I stopped at the Carolina Beach Marina to wait out a storm for three days. That storm wasn't bad but another popped up a couple days later so I stayed at the marina. Last storm was pretty big, 68 mph gust was the fastest here. Then another windy day that I was afraid the swing bridges in SC would not open so I stayed another two days! Hopefully out of here in the morning 1-13.
@@crazyNCman Good call, it's never wrong to be cautious. Safe travels!!
You almost passed someone!! Once this weather passes I will cross the SC State line finally.
Lol, it would have been the fourth pass in 3 years 🤣
Made my morning to see the area I want to move to from the water! I was even able to pick out the house and boat dock of on of the properties we have bookmarked on a real estate page. Way better seeing it from the water than streetview lol
Sweet! 😀
I like these video over the time lapse one. I have been living on my sailboat for 2 1/2 years now. Just left Washington NC last week headed down the ICW towards Florida! You are right about feeling like you are living old school. It is so nice living on a boat. Very simple life that is very gratifying!
Thanks for the feedback! It must be chilly up in NC, I hope you have an enclosed cockpit!! I agree about living on a boat, I love it!! Safe travels :)
@@sailing_el_jaleo Enclosed cockpit!! No, this is budget sailing on my $3000 Jeanneau! I do have a dodger though thank god! Anchored at a sketchy spot in Topsail tonight. That diesel heater sure feels good after a long cold day.
@@crazyNCman Lol, I hear ya about the budget sailing, I just have a bimini top, which I'm sure you already knew 😀 I stayed at Topsail Sound once during a blow, I was nervous getting in and out of there, not sure I'd try it again unless I had to. Diesel heaters are a must have! I actually considered not getting one the first year, it's by far the best single piece of equipment I've installed on El Jaleo. I see you have vids as well, just subbed, I'm looking forward to checking them out 😀
Cheers. Happy New Year, man. Be safe out there.. nice sunset!
Happy New Year!
Been there lots of times, Beaufort and HHI are cool places!
Thanks for the shout-out. The job you did on the anchorage videos is outstanding. The detail you provided both from showing it on Navionics and your lovely knowledge on each anchorage is very valuable. Hoping to be out there this year, that is the plan. Really love the montage with the music that you did at the end of this video with the drone shots. Keep that up!!!
Thanks for the feedback! Have a great New Year, best luck getting out on the water, perhaps our paths will cross someday 😃
@@sailing_el_jaleo I am really hoping we will!!! Soon I will be in the same waters as you so we will need to keep in touch in more real time. Can do that through Patreon. Do you share your AIS? I have several friends that I follow them with AIS.
@@peterallensite Yes, we should be on all of the major AIS trackers, like Marine Traffic, etc., we are the only El Jaleo with AIS in the world so we are easier to find than many vessels with more common names. Good luck, let me know when you take off on your adventure!!
Merry Christmas to you!
Merry Christmas Janeen!!
I believe that it is pronounced make'-in. Like Macon Georgia.
Thanks!
Isnt the difference between a & b , that a you transmit also , so ships can see you , ?
From what I understand the Class A transponders take priority over Class B transponders. There is only a certain amount of bandwidth on the AIS frequency and Class A transmissions go thru first and more often. Class B like the Vesper both send and receive.
@@sailing_el_jaleo I don't think a takes priority , I think it is stronger, longer range , does your receive also ?
@@davidwarnes5158 Yes, it sends and receives. The boats within approx 20mi that have AIS show up on my Navionics navigation screen.
@@sailing_el_jaleo so you show up on there A IS,
@@davidwarnes5158 yes
What is your cruising speed motoring? The other sailboats go blowing by you! Well in time lapse it looks that way.
I've only passed a total of 3 boats in 3 years of sailing, El Jaleo is a slow ole gal 😉With zero current we achieve 4.0-4.3 knots, most other sailboats I look at on AIS have speeds of 5.5-7.4 knots. How fast does yours go? What kind of fuel consumption? Just curious, thx!
@@sailing_el_jaleo That is pretty slow. My little Yanmar 2GM can only muster 5.5 kts on a good day.
@@crazyNCman I typically run around 1800RPM, I could push it much higher but our travels are more about resource management, time doesn't have a very large value. I can make it from DE to FL on less than 180gal of diesel, it's a bit of a trade off.
@@sailing_el_jaleo You are carrying a great deal of weight. I have Jeanneau Attalia 32, not sure of the fuel consumption. I motored from Oriental to Washington NC and used 2 gallons averaging 5 kts.
Enjoyed the ride!! Good commentary and furry crew humor too!!😊
Glad you enjoyed it, the crew is a handful for sure 🤣
Liked and Subbed. Just FYI - Waccamaw River is pronounced Wah-kah-maw, and that marina Wacca Wacce is pronounced Wah-kah Watchee. Good vid, brings back memories. Posting from Georgetown Landing Marina, I see you passed by a couple days ago. :)
Thanks for the pronunciations (I'll try and get them right in the upcoming vids), the only thing I'm good at is murdering names!! 😆 Hope all is well in Georgetown, do you stay there year round or are you heading South?
@@sailing_el_jaleo Both! South for good next year is the plan. Fair winds!
