That was very interesting!
Well done,Ed!Thank you!
Halwill Junction remained derelict for many years before becoming a housing estate. A large circular brick built pit used to house a turntable for locomotives. All that workmanship sacrificed because of our fatal attraction to the humble private car. 🚗🚙🚕🚑🚛🚚🚗🚕🚌🚎🚐🛻
Really nostalgic, many thanks
What would the men who built these wonderful railways think of those politicians who closed them I don’t expect it would be repeatable ps great video
I remember as a child in the 70s much of the track around Reeves yard was still visible. More trackwork was uncovered when the warehouses were converted into flats and the pavement laid. If you know where to look there’s still a stump of rail buried in the grass at the end of the quay line!
Brilliant work,Ed!Thank you!
Nice vid, thank you. Surprised u omitted view of 34006 nameplate in ol museum, tho? 🙄
I commuted by bicycle along this route for a while when I worked in Estover. It's the 'wrong side of Plymouth' for most stuff? I think a cable car over the top of it could be nice - a fast one could do the journey in half an hour? Nothing good is ever going to happen again while any of us can pull a motor vehicle up to our front doors.
Fantastic video!Thank you!
Fantastic, as ever. 😊 Cheers, Ed.
When BR wanted to sell the whole line intact, the price was about £30,000. In today's money that would have been £3 - 5 million! Since there were very few preservation societies in those early days, and the public did not want, or couldn't afford, such a sum, the opportunity of having a fully-functioning railway was squandered. Pity we can't turn the clock back!
Too depressing to watch. What a waste.
No sound!
Avon Lane please!!!!!
Nice video, thank you. The railway was unique in the UK as the only one with an exclamation mark in its title!
1:40 The carriage shed is a Grade II listed building.
Top class research and production.
At 1:40 the carriage and loco works building has the sign 'HAND CAR WASH' in a sign similar to what one might see on a station platform. A nice touch I thought.
Really excellent video and learnt a lot near where i live thankyou so much.
My family moved to Ford in 1981, and the LSWR stone-arched viaduct was still standing then. My school mates and I hunted for newts in Ford cutting, which by that time had fallen victim to a lot of fly-tipping - builders‘ waste, old sinks, washing machines and so on. There was also evidence of the platforms which protruded out of the cutting. There was a pedestrian underpass that linked Ford and neighboring Keyham through the embankment. Perhaps the railway was the border between the two districts. We also explored both tunnels that ran under Stoke Damerel district. All the embankments were still in place and the tunnels had been fenced off. Needless to say, it hadn’t been done very well. There was plenty of evidence that many other people had explored them, too. Just imagine if the trackbed had been preserved, it would have been a wonderful cycling route through the city. It is amazing to me how much has changed over a relatively short period of time. Thank you so very much for sharing your very informative videos with us! 👍😊
There are plans to reopen this to Okehampton.
great footage of the industrial estate
Some really alarming driving at 3:07...
As a non Devon local (I moved down here 10yrs ago) I am so glad you pronounced "Lanson" correctly I have been corrected that many times by the rep at Pat Williams for calling it Lawn-ses-ton I now call it Lanson LOL!
Your videos on these old lines are very much appreciated. I'd also like to see a Bere Alston to Okehampton video not missing anything out.
My brain was, "Okehampton to Hawaii?" It wouldn't have been that farfetched. I visited the many times the norfolk seaside village of California.
Thank you for sharing that. Ashbury Station was close enough for me to walk or cycle to as a child.
Sad to see this. I travelled over all the lines in this area in 1964. Cursed be Richard Beeching & the Wilson government for implementing his report commissioned by Ernest Marples but sidelined by his Conservative government.
Back in the 80’s the Station Yard at Upton, Oxon, was bought and 3 new homes added alongside the old station. It was renamed Beeching Close by the local council.
The route from Plymouth was severed in 1968. In 1970 the line to Gunnislake was singled...
Edd Just watches Okehampton to Halwill and Okehampton to Bude , they gave me so much pleasure I can't thank you enough. In a world that is so sad at the moment watching your videos has really lifted the gloom. Thankyou again. I will watch out for more.
Excellent. Great temptation to go and modify the Beeching Close sign to "Beeching Closed It"!
Oh dear, and again at c.0:45. The bus connections with Bude and Launceston didn't start until October 2022. Only Tavistock had a dedicated bus link when the Dartmoor Line opened in November 2021.
Buses went from St Davids in Exeter to Holdsworthy and Bude via Okehampton town centre. They only went up to the station when the railway came back into regular use
I think a correction is required, at c.0:40. In November 2021 the initial service was alternate hours. It became hourly with the May 2022 timetable.
Thank you, Ed; you've done it again. 😊 I love your vids for their combination of railways and local history.
there is another version of alantic coast express going from london to newquay now
Thanks for another brilliant video Ed. Arouses sentimental feelings when one thinks of what has been lost. Bet it all looked so well kept in its heyday.
Another cracking vid, Ed. 😊
Thanks again Ed for taking me on a tour of beautiful Devon and Cornwall. Seeing that so much has been lost, built on, filled in or left to flood saddens me. How that valuable route would be such an asset today as a cycle and walking path was obviously not seen back in the sixties. A sad loss to both locals and tourists alike.
Ed, I enjoy your videos. I'd enjoy them even more if you narrated in your normal voice, as though you're talking to a friend. The sing-song intonation comes across as contrived and makes it hard for me to listen to what you're saying. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but perhaps there are others who feel the same.
I have to disagree @jackmartinleith, I think the presentation is excellent. It's very clear and paced perfectly. The information presented in Ed's video here is delivered exactly how it should be in my oppinion. He definitly isn't singing. ;)
@@EJWoodford Each to their own.
Excellent content as always ED.Keep up the good work.!!!!!!!!!!!
Good video but films like this always leave me depressed for what has been lost for future generations. In my childhood the railway journey to our holiday was as eagerly anticipated and planned as the holiday itself. Children today spend the journey strapped into their seats gazing out into traffic.
Testament to how much love there still is for these engines. I was at the Bluebell just a few weeks ago, and rode behind Sir Archie twice. The transformation when I look at 3:15 is incredible
Thanks, Ed, for yet another cracking vid. 😊
Ah, those summer Saturdays in the 60s and early 70s when all the long loco-hauled trains used to head down to Paignton. What a tremendous sight that was!
Great description of the Paignton branch. This brings back memories of travelling down that line from Paddington past Devon red cliffs and glimpses of the sea at the start of a childhood holiday
Superb. Thanks for sharing. Most informative. I cycle the Camel Trail most days but regret there are no more trains west of Nanstallon.
Bring all these lines back - badly needed now .
I, too, wen on the ACE, down to Padstow, in the mid 1950's. I remember quite clearly, walking up to the end of the platform to see the two magnificent Merchant Navy locomotives barely a metre apart, heading the two portions that were running on that day. Imagine my total surprise recently when I was waiting for the 17:10 train from Taunton to Paddington to hear the announcer refer to the imminent arrival of the "Atlantic Coast Express service. Turns out that the name has been revived for an undistinguished dmu which sets out from Newquay and stops at nearly all the stations up to Paddington.
