Ahoy Skylark
Приєднався 30 чер 2023
Skylark is a 1991 Tartan 31, hull #112, a fiberglass sloop currently docked in Macatawa, Michigan. She is a well-found boat, in beautiful condition, but even these boats have a few problems, which I address in the episodes I post here. I winter in Tucson, Arizona, and if you watch the episodes in chronological order you can follow me from where I began.
Around the Boatyard
Recorded October 8, 2024. Looking at the mess left by the f***ing spiders and at the other boats in the yard. Mostly sailboats! :)

Leaving a Boat Slip Singlehanded with a Bow Bridle

Recorded September 27, 2024. When sailing singlehanded, you have to prepare your dock lines for departure so that you can cast off from behind the helm. Using a looped stern line and a bow bridle usually works, as shown here.

Big Wind Dragged My Anchor on a Lee Shore

West marine rust remover takes the midge stains off in seconds. Waterline too. Seconds.
Thanks for sharing your journey. May I ask what boat are you sailing please (sorry if I missed this in your commentary). Fair winds. (Edit, ah I see you have a 1991 Tartan 31. A lovely sailboat. )
Looks pretty good for sitting half submerged all summer!
I hear and see your noting of the boat, but it looks pretty good to us. Been watching Skylark all summer
keep the sailing videos coming.
I am going Saturday either out of Frankfort or on Grand Traverse bay.
Oh Neck a ma. 😛
I live in the area. Next time you are in Arcadia you should walk to the Arcadia Marsh Wildlife Preserve.
I was there over the 4th of July weekend with a friend and we went multiple times.
first video i seen pf someone sailing in michigan. supposed to be moving that way with my son soon and i'll be looking for a sailboat..
She’s a Catalina 42 mk1. I admired your tartan 31. Sorry, we didn’t cross paths.
She looks well equipped for cruising. Did you add the mainsail furling unit?
Hope you can get moving soon
Didn’t know spiders could swim that far. I find them in the pool occasionally but they are usually dead!
That hose was probably the anti syphon loop , if there is a problem now your boat will flood ?
Really surprising how the spiders are getting to anchored boats
heh, all it takes is for them to be tied to a dock beforehand
I've seen movies start like this, Eric
...and end how?
Just curious but what keeps someone from coming aboard while you're out and walking off with your laptop or anything else? Maybe not much crime in Vermilion?
The drawbridge operator did not lower the one southbound gate after the cars clear the bridge. I wonder why? Great video otherwise! I used to love that drawbridge when I lived back in Michigan as I was born in Grand Haven and grew up in Muskegon County in Fruitport Township. It was a cool thing to watch! I actually have a video on my UA-cam channel of this bridge going up and back down that I filmed at street level just before I moved out here to the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area in 2019. If I still lived in West Michigan, I would probably want to be the US31 drawbridge operator because of how cool of a job it looks to be! 😃🛥️
Cool video Eric!
Envious!!
Wow
Water is soooo clear!!!! 💕
Nice docking job!! Who’s the band then?
So you successfully singlehanded to an achorage? Congrats!
How long is she?
I just realised you have subtitles on your videos! I can turn off my speakers to avoid the wind noise and still know what you're saying! Except the program says you're heading "do north." What's your ultimate destination? Call your sister!
odd how the boat leaves a noticeable smooth trail
That is the same kayak I have at home! The old town 14ft. it is one Richard found used on Craig's list that Charles bought and then sold to me! It is the one Jeff used, and then now Bill uses when we go out!!
Gotta love the powerboaters who have no thought about the impact of their wakes!
Most powerboaters are considerate of sailors, but some are not.
Under way!
That's pretty good, I'd like that
Fore Me?🤔
I do that a lot its a lot of fun
Dog
They gruesome!🤣
Surprising those big boats are going in there
Good luck, Eric. It will be good summer sailing.
Nice! Wish my plumbing was that good.
I'll send my diesel guy right over.
Hmmph! Where I come from, no drips means it's out of oil/coolant.😊
Any relation to Viva Frei? 😄 Fair winds!
Wow that's quite a maze of docks
I told you ya need a heater!🥶
Did you know back in the 50's we had a mile out in places of beautiful White sandy Beaches. Oh to be a toddler again back in time. Now the beaches are rough.
Why is plastic necessary?
Good question! The issue is single-use plastic. I want to find a cover that is durable and re-usable.
Yay! Doesn't take long!
It took some time to get the boat into the slings, but yes once she's there they can just roller out and splash her.
Looking good. Always a relief to be back in the water. Looks like VC-17 on the bottom. That's our go to bottom paint as well. It holds up well in the Great Lakes waters.
I used two quarts (which aren't quite quarts), which wasn't quite enough to cover the entire keel, but at US$120.00 per can I wasn't going to be fussy. I'll be swimming off the boat and will go under the hull with a scrubby at some point.

You just missed Wonderhussy!
What?
It’s not stupid to have your wheel that far ahead. lol It makes for sailing alone so much easier.
I take your point, it does make it easier to reach the sheets and halyards from the helm when single-handing. Like everything on a sailboat, it's a compromise. The main problems are that it obstructs the companionway, it forces the helmsman to either sit on one of the side benches or stand, and if other crew are tending to the jib sheets there's a lot of commotion directly behind him. With virtually all other sailboats having the wheel all the way aft, you have to wonder about the design choice here.
WTF!😵😮
