There are multiple versions of the implementation and they provide minimally useful information. The version you opened counts either when the lid is opened or when the pouring/tilt event. I opened another version which looks like a basic timer, so when you reset, it starts to count time from 0 and bang on lit red after 2 months. I travel for work and I remember resetting for a new filter before my trip. I was not home most of the 2 months except for about a week. When I returned at the end of 2nd month, the indicator was blinking red. This is virtually no science in this. It basically serves as a marketing tool to remind you to buy new filters. It has zero awareness of true number of gallons that have flowed through the filter or the quality of your tap water to accurately judge the remaining life of your filter.
