North Georgia Sabal Palm
Переглядів 6087 років тому
In this video I have filmed one of the local Sabal Palms, growing just outside of Cumming, in North Georgia. This particular specimen has been growing here for many years and did endure the very cold winter of 2014, when temperatures dropped to about 6 degrees Fahrenheit. I intend to film more of the local Sabal palms in the area.

My Subtropical Garden Overview for June
Whew! Seven years ago now. Your video was a nice walk down memory lane to see how we used to pack our plants!
Between a sunny windowsill (ambient humidity) and a terrarium with LED, which would you be inclined to do?
Real late but heres some answers. Heliamphora require extremely high humidity, high light, and cool temperatures. This is because their from the top on rain mountains, which are all those things. So unlike most carnivorous plants, heliamphora almost require terrariums. That being said, if you can provide these conditions on your windowsill they should do just fine
Hey bud, beautiful heliamphora. It would be awesome to get an update on this thing . Hope it’s doing well.
What I love about the Meyer lemon tree is that they will stay ripe on the tree for months. So if you’re not ready to use any, you can just leave em on the tree until you’re ready. Pick as you need them. Incredible
Looks like Sabal Mexicana which is more Cold Hardy then Florida Sabals
Just found your channel!…..did I hear you say you are in the 7B Atlanta area??? If so what soil are you using to maintain all the tropicals? Do you have to cover them in the winter?
Great 👍🏻
What's the secrete to grow such a nice garden, aside from putting the time? Thank you
Are you Kyle K?
I live in the northernmost point of georgia " catoosa county" i have seen many try and fail out here with citrus. You have to move the plant indoor for the winter under grow light, also your yield will be smaller.
Hi, Nice Video...I live By Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and can't find a Meyer Plant anywhere... Will You Sale a Cutting
Do you leave them out year round?
Nice! Congratulations. How far are you from Marietta GA?
Needs a pretty bad haircut
Hye I am in GA too. Do you bring your lemon plant indoor during winter or only when the weather is freezing?
Hi, few questions Is your Meyer Lemon seeded? How long did it take to fruit? Off subject.. have you been successful getting your banana tree to fruit?
Would you recommend planting one in the ground if living in Dekalb County?
We have them in ground in Summerville SC
@@frtripp how do you protect them during the freezing temperature?
Where is this located exactly?
This is located at Fajita Grill restaurant in Cumming, GA.
Hey!! I was wondering where you purchase your Meyer Lemon tree? I live in Atlanta.
I have purchased my large Meyer Lemon from Home Depot. The smaller one I have is purchased online from Logee's. Happy growing!
Hello where in Ga do you live? I live in Roswell
I am located in Flowery Branch in North East GA.
Wow your tree looks amazing . Just found your channel. Where did you buy your tree from and how do you take care of it during colder months? Can you share some tips on what to do while growing a new plant? Thanks in Advance!
Hello Sravanthi, I purchased the larger Meyer Lemon from Home Depot and the smaller one is from Logee's online. I keep them outside as much as I can but do bring them in to the garage during the winter when temperatures are below freezing at night. I have let them take a few frosts but don't believe that is necessary. It's important to have a well draining, well aerated soil. Happy growing!
Makes me nostalgic for when I lived in Oklahoma.
Looks lovely. I'm thinking of one for my Terrarium. Do you need to cool it down? Do you add ferts? What lights are you running?
Thanks MTech. I used to be concerned with cooling and ran a small fan to keep the terrarium cooler, but have found it unnecessary for this variety. I do not apply any fertilizer. This plant has actually gotten much larger since I made this video. Happy growing!
@@subtropicalsoutheast1810 What are the temperature ranges you keep the heliamphora at?
Hello there! I just found your channel. I also live in North Georgia and I’m growing some tropicals as well.
Hello Yesenia! Thanks for the comment and I hope you are enjoying your plants. Tropicals are always a blast to grow!
Volume to low. Great selection of plants. What are the prices?
I thought I heard you say those were ice cream bananas in another video? I'm also in North Georgia, I've had great results from musa basjoo, but I'd like to find something that is cold hardy and might make an edible fruit some day.
Yes, those are Blue Java Ice Cream bananas. Some other good options, especially if you're looking for fruit are Orinoco or Veinte Cohol, a short season banana. Velutina also fruits but are seedy.
I'm also in North Georgia. I have two in-ground Owari Satsuma trees in my greenhouse. I've been getting fruit from them for about five years I guess. On the nights when it falls below freezing I have a thermostat that turns on a couple of 40 watt lamps near the trees. They are extremely hardy though. Thats a Trachycarpus palm there right? I have one about that size and three musa basjoo mats going. Nice to see another North GA person doing this stuff.
That sounds like a great setup for some in ground Citrus! Trees of that age are probably producing quite a bit of fruit! That is a Trachycarpus palm, it's a great trunking palm for North Georgia. Musa Basjoo is also really great for a tropical look. Right by my citrus trees I also have an Ice Cream banana which I grow in the ground. I'm yet to get any fruit off it, but it does return every year so far. Happy Growing!
Thanks for sharing !!!
Got any updates? It's been a year and half.
Cool video! Didn't know i had a fellow CP grower in North Georgia. I have a heterodoxa x minor that I've had over a year and still haven't gotten those nice red nectar spoons, I'm not sure if the plant hasn't matured enough or if it isn't getting enough light
Awesome! CPs are always a blast to grow! Usually if the plant is already developing the nectar spoons but they're not red it may be dependent upon the level of lighting.
@@subtropicalsoutheast1810 i thought that might be the case, i have them growing under a full spectrum Finnex LED planted plus for about 12 hours a day, the plant itself has done well just lacks color
@@subtropicalsoutheast1810 also forgot to mention i just uploaded a video featuring my CP collection on my channel so feel free to check it out
are you planning on adding other heliamphora? maybe if you remove the soil on the bottom of the terrarium itll give the plant more room to grow. also i’ve heard the color white is a better light reflector than silver aluminum foil.
Good note on the white color! I went with aluminum foil because it can be crinkled up and also wont get saturated with water when I mist the terrarium. I may add additional Heliamphora! I've thought about making a larger terrarium featuring these wonderful plants.
Pretty cool stuff. I live in Habersham County and have been growing palms for about 10 years. I have a 15' trachycarpus and a 10' also that I've grown from one gallon container. Also numerous sabal minors, Needle palms, Sago palms, Oleander and all types of tropicals. It's a fun hobby and people love to talk about the palms.
Awesome! Way to go with your plants! Lots of interesting subtropicals can thrive in our climate, but seem to be so underused, so it's always cool to hear others growing these fun plants! If you haven't already got some, I'd definitely recommend adding a few banana varieties to your yard. They're very hardy perennials and really add to the tropical flare! I've been striving to get some to fruit here, but have yet to be successful. Maybe next year I will experiment with the veinte cohol variety in particular...
Hiii my canna lily is not blooming ...what to do ....plz advise
Cannas always seem to flower quite readily. They do enjoy a good amount of watering and can thrive with fertilizer. If you haven't fertilized your plant, a good organic fertilizer may help stimulate the flowering process. Just make sure it gets a decent amount of sunlight and it should be happy.
you should do an update on this terrarium!
I plan to soon! The plant has grown a lot!
Subtropical Southeast right on looking forward to it
Was that an ice cream banana plant? What zone are you located at? Do you leave it outside year around or do you dig it out for the winter ? I bought one this summer and I planted in outside in zone 8B. I just want to make sure I don’t kill it
do an update on the washingtonia robusta
I plan to do an update on it and the lower garden shortly. I haven't spent too much time in that area after the hurricane damage in September.
To see first hand the effects of hurricane Irma on homes is very eye opening and it makes me feel very lucky I'm not living in these sort of environment. Surely you had to bring in pots of plants you could carry indoors otherwise there could have been more losses besides your back balcony. Love all your pitcher plants. Would the banana tree you planted in the barrel produce fruits? Good update but I'm pretty sure you have a lot of cleaning up and replanting to do.
Thank you! It was a lot of clean up, but everything is now done. The potted bananas should produce edible fruit, and I am hoping they will get the first harvest in 2018! :-) I've also got a few citrus plants and I had my first lemon harvest earlier in December, but I didn't make a video of it, maybe next time!
Wow, I'm very impressed with your garden which looks exactly like what one would see in a tropical 🌴 country like mine. I love your pitcher plants but your other green and flowering plants are just as great. Your cannas are beautiful. Quite surprised to see banana trees there, didn't think it would survive there. You have quite a number of yam plants but are they just ornamental or can they be eaten? Overall, great garden. I can tell that you put in a lot of love in it. Thumbs up! 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! Some of the bananas I do protect by moving indoors, while others stay outside year-round! Most of the plants are just for ornamental purpose minus most of the citrus and some of the bananas I grow. I am hoping to get a harvest of bananas in the future!
Thanks! Helped us decide if we should chance ordering from these companies. We will give them a try based on your video.
Thank you! Both of these companies have been reliable and have provided great plants every time I have ordered from them.
