The Lanky Cyclist
United States
Приєднався 6 чер 2020
A physiologically unremarkable specimen, The Lanky Cyclist only becomes more mediocre with age. He doesn't dwell on past athletic glories because that would require his having accomplished something sporty worth remembering. He's not a pro or ex-pro, but he's seen them on TV. He hasn't bike packed across the nation, but he once shortcutted RAGBRAI. He sometimes races, and he even once won an uncontested fatlocross race. He likes to ride with his kids, but he never lets them win.

Final #cyclocross race of the season! I finally made it to a CBUS series race. Great day for cross, especially considering it was December in Ohio. Looking forward to next season!

Raced the 1,2,3 35 All-Stars and managed to only get lapped once. Then raced the single speed race where I finished 10th out of 30. Probably my best racing of the season. Felt fresh, made mostly sound decisions, and just enjoyed the day. Thanks to Jacob Ott for the photos!!! Traveled down to PA for one of the Western Pennsylvania Cyclocross Series races in Aliquippa. They have some of the best courses! Second Cat 3/4 race of the season. Struck my pedal on the first lap, and lost a ton of positions. Rode consistently afterwards. Fastest lap was my last lap which is amazing considering I crashed again on a technical part trying to pass lapped traffic. Second straight race where I passed someone on the last lap. These longer races give me more time to find my groove and I seem to get stronger to...

@@ol48spring RIP 🪦 All-City
@ man. I’m in Minneapolis you would think they would be around. Bought a stormchaser. Different but same principle.
Glad you had a enjoyable race season. Thanks for sharing. Are you riding fixed or free wheel in your races. 🤔
Free wheel. I don’t think I could even ride fixed lol. 😂
Pretty sweet bike, Dude.
Would be a great option for your adventures!
Badass, great job on some seasonal goals. Cool video, this racing looks super tough. Im sure all the racers are crazy strong. I have so many questions about the bike. Looked like some aggressive 38's for tires? Shifting?
@@TravelingThru222 33s with some aggressive tread. On the bike in the vid, no shifting. Singlespeed. The other bike running SRAM etap.
Good thing you got it in before the cold and snow set in! Seatpost slippage from the internal mechanism has been my biggest annoyance with my Canyon Exceed, hope you don’t have to keep encountering it.
Racing this weekend. 🥶 good to know about the exceed. I might need to invest in a clamp or something.
Do you think this type of cycling makes you a stronger road cyclist or is it totally a different animal?
Certainly makes me a better bike handler. As for fitness, it worked for Van Aert and van der Poel. It’s more repeated efforts than the typical 5-10 minute road effort to break away and the sustained effort to stay away. But I don’t race road so hard to say. It certainly won’t hurt.
@TheLankyCyclist i see. The road crits are repeated efforts over and over... so it may apply.. im 60yo. I should really stop doing this stuff . So dangerous for old men.
@ was thinking road racing but yeah crits would probably be similar. We have guys pushing 70 in the series. Probably much safer racing cross than racing crits. 😂
@TheLankyCyclist oh yeah it is . I've seen many crashes and injuries with my own involvement w 3 of them under my belt and 2 separated shoulders
Awesome stuff 👏 👏
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Sweet video, dude. Great job on 6th. This video was fun to watch, I have some special ties to Aliquippa also. Super cool.
Thanks TT!
Cool video, bud.
SAD MUSIC!
You rode so well!
@@TheLankyCyclist you describe it as your worst race of the season. it was the only one i was happy with for me. every other one i just didn't feel dialed. oh well. there is always next year!
Just how it goes sometimes. Fair critiques. Locking down venues is one of the biggest barriers to hosting a race. I think this will be the last year for Gordon. We have a couple options in the works tho! Thanks for racing my dude
So hard to get a venue. I'm going to try again here.
Are you still in NE Ohio? I'm in Cleveland and just got my first fat bike
Yes but I’m out of the fatbike game.
😂😂😂😂😂
I love that I fell right in front of you lol
Not the first time! 🤣
FREAKIN BOAs!
Such a bummer!
Awesome, fun to watch. Great footage. I’m not great with right handed turns either.
Something about the drive side
I do agree that the profiles would be a great enhancement for Wahoo. Although I don't do different disciplines, I do ride different bikes, with different equipment (some have power meters, some don't, one has electronic shifting, etc.). Garmin connect sounds like Apple's ecosystem. Once you are in it, you don't want to leave. I get it. I don't need it. Love my Wahoo Roam.
Garmin Connect is why I left Garmin and went to wahoo…. Ha
What bag is that under the top tube?
It’s a custom Cedaero half frame bag. There’s a vid on it.
@@TheLankyCyclist Thank you!
Excellent video, nice music. No need for a "come back"... I only ride lugged steel frame bikes.. have been for 70 years. I've passed on 4 of my bikes to my grand kids so left with just 4. 81 Miyata Pro Aero Suntour Superb and Shimano Ultra , 82 SOMEC Mostly Campy./Cinelli .. Rivendell Hunqapillar, Rivendell Cheviot. All 4 bought new. Liked and subscribed.
That’s great you passed them on to the next generation.
Great to see one way or another that steel bikes are making some what of a come back. Since the mid 70's I've been riding lugged steel bikes and still am today complete with period correct componentry from the era, friction shifting and so on. Believe it or not my go to road bike will be a converted Lugged steel TRACK bike, I had the frame builder of this frameset do the conversion for me, what I was was hoping for is exactly what I got, a super quick responsive bike that down hilled like a bat out of hell and it was a good climber as well, some would have thought it would be a horrible road bike but I've ridden many 100 mile plus rides without any problems what so ever and it performed when I need it to do so, it got me out of a few pickles here and there. BTW: Great looking bike!
Thanks for sharing. That’s really cool that you still have the period correct components. Steel is real
Magic!
Nice job 👍
@@keithpearson1552 getting in shape for ski season
Hell yeah. Thanks for the shoutout! Nice to see my shoe made an appearance on the steep hill at 9:04
@@ckortes6281 you lost your shoe!?
@TheLankyCyclist yeah! Last lap! It was a...challenging finish
battle of the season for me so far this year. it was an awesome race going back and forth with you. my weight distribution is biased to the rear which helped me really dig in on that climb and get good bite. but the corners were complete chaos for me lol. you rode that last lap so well and just put me away.
@@markmilliren1453 hoping I can be more competitive than at Heck but I’m worried Solon will be more of the same. Might come down to the tiebreaker at Kirtland.
Personally I prefer the Wahoo ❤, because I think it's much more user-friendly. Oh and you can upload your rides (gpx) into connect if you want.
THE PEOPLE WANT DAY 2 FOOTAGE. RELEASE THE TAPES!!!
😂 don’t worry those tapes will be released. Heck tapes may have gone missing. 😉
its so cool to see someone in the same place as me since I also live in Cleveland! My favorite place to go skiing is Brandywine its right next to Boston mills, mainly cuz its where my school ski club goes.
I prefer Boston Mills but that's mostly because I can lap it up on my lunch hour. Brandywine is pretty special tho. Hoping for a lot of snow this year!
Integration of fitness metrics is something that, sadly, from my point of view, will ditch Wahoo. They tried with the Rival and completely failed. I think not having a fitness ecosystem will really make the difference and you can see other companies spending efforts in doing this (Suunto-Sram, Coros). Wahoo somehow abandoned that fitness space and it was a very bad decision despite the fact that their cycling computers are really superior.
Great family fun. Damn trees! Awesome vid.
Was awesome to get the family out.
Couldn’t let the G rating stand could ‘ya? F-ing 🌳! 😀
can't help myself!
I bought one it is alright but nothing to brag about
I’m looking for spd pedals that go well with these shoes that have some thread. Can I buy spd pedals that have this bigger platform on them like the Shimano XT PD M8120? Or would the platform interfere with the threads too much making it harder too clip in?
An old 10 speed will do that. But is it comfortable?
Long time Garmin user as a runner, enjoyed Garmin Connect. Started cycling and got a wahoo for the easy-to-read display. The device is great however after two years now Garmin Connect is also the reason for me to also get a bike computer from Garmin. With the Wahoo App e.g. you cannot even export a GPX file from your trainings, only .fit is supported. Edit: After a few rides with the Garmin, I'm going back to the Wahoo! 😆 The letters and digits on the Garmin 840 are so small in comparison to the Roam. Together with the heavily reflecting display this is more annoying to me than not have an automatic upload to Garmin Connect. Also the on-top button of the Wahoo are more comfortable to use for me than the Garmin's side buttons.
"As good as it gets" only in the pro race. Masters fields at Rochester are nothing special. Kilowatt Cross, Sept 28, Northfield MA - 10 of the top 50 ranked 60+ crossers in the US. That's what we have to race against every weekend. Funny thing, none of the 4 ranked in the top 7 won, #24 won (Paul Vogel). Another 4 or 5 Top 50 ranked riders are local just didn't race Kilowatt. Again, I challenge all racers, come to New England and get a taste.
The most important thing is you rode the race and you finished. 👏👏👏👏
No it's not! Come to New England, no one shows up "just to finish". LAST - that's what happens to crossers from all over who come to the northeast, keep going East it gets harder and faster.
Thanks Roger.
Brings back memories of my CX racing. Lots of battles for DFL.
😂
Nga u sold me on that
Hey - huge kudos for getting out there in an event like that - I feel like a lot would have bailed - especially on doing it again(second day).
Thanks! I talked to one of the guys who finished behind me on day one and he was pretty frazzled.
Also I would totally eat those barriers.
You have some skills. You’d be fine.
You may have been dead last, but you still looked fast!
🙏
Wide birthing hips? 🤷🏼♂️ are you a what? A Nut case perhaps? From the sound of your voice, 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾

@@alexanderrigda7002 funny that the NEOCX SS races have 4x the number of participants. We have our priorities.
I continue to use Strava as a private profile with no subscribers. I'm just recording for myself and that's it. And I cycle 7000 km in a year. Strava is toxic, someone told me I go too slow, many anonymous "champions". Strava is ok, but without the social part.
That looked hard via single speed!
It wasn’t easy lol. Wasn’t a ton of climbing but still hard!
I think he tripped you. Nice racing my dude!
@@JDirom thanks JD! Watched an interview with you a few weeks ago. Really cool to hear your story.
@@TheLankyCyclist cheers! I assume it was the In the Drops podcast, was nice to be on a podcast again.
Yes, that was the one!
Cool to see what the higher level race course looks like from the POV. Did you stick around and watch the pros?
Sadly not this time. On Sunday, I was eager to get home. I did see a lot of them around and prerode the course behind Kerry Werner & Caroline Mani on Sunday, at least until I crashed and flatted.
💯
I have this bike and put the fox 32 tc fork, paul comp fixed rear hub, then maxxis tires with a 40 in the rear then a 42 up front, and finally cane creek eesilk stem and steat post with an ergon saddle. Cheers! Great review!
