Appalachian Trail Day 11 - Wicked storm in a shelter! ⛈️⛈️
One of the worse storms I have been in with 30mph wind gusts. Lighting, thunder, rain, and 30-40’s in temperature.
I bailed since it was Thanksgiving day to go sightseeing around Hiawassee area.

Appalachian Trail Day 10 - North Carolina does not mess around. Better have trail legs!

I completed the Georgia section of the AT. The first climbs in North Carolina are no joke. Better have trail legs or you will suffer like I did at 1mph or less. 🤣
Appalachian Trail Day 9 - All night rain brings a foggy day in the woods.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Because if people that pack crap into the trail and does not pack it out. I found a bear box with a ton of empty mountain house packages and left over tunas. Hiked from Gaddis Gap to Plumborchard Gap Shelter. Foggy day start after overnight rains.

I returned to the AT to do another long section hike. This is about a month later than the last time I was out there. I was loaded with new food, different meds, and slightly different gear I picked up where I left and and continued my way NOBO. I was concerned about the weather for later this week but I was prepared with winter gear to handle 20 degree weather. But hard for anyone to prepare f...

Appalachian Trail Day 6 - Sunrise from bed, I don’t want to get up.

It was since watching sunrise from inside Whitley Gap shelter. I had a lot of time to reflect on the hike and life in general while watching sunrise. Great part of the trail. Very “buffed” as other have said. Mainly because it follows an old Forrest road. Little roots or rocks.

After a night at the Green Dragon Hostel I went back to the trail. But first visited Hiawassee to load up on heartburn medicine and different food. Specially the hiker special, Raman Noodles. 🍜
Appalachian Trail Day 4 - I am forced off the trail for not taking in enough calories.

The calorie deficit caught up to me. I am forced off the trail for not taking in enough food. My appetite and hart burn got me. I called a shuttle at Neels Gap and went to Hiawassee. Then spent the night at the Green Dragon Hostel. Great folks there. They got me going again the next day after I changed my food. Sorry for the audio difficulties. I am not sure what happen at the start of the day....
Appalachian Trail Day 3 - The coffee tastes better when you are camping!
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Місяць тому
My favorite time of the day when I am hiking is drinking a hot cup of coffee in a chilly morning. It wake me right up and gets me going. This is the third day of my AT section hike. Today I would discover that a food which worked in previous hikes, may not work on future hikes. I could eat the flour tortillas with salami, cheese, and Fritos. I had to stick to bars and candy for lunch over 4 day...
Appalachian Trail Day 2 - Woken up at 4am by lost hiker.

Second day on this section hike of the AT. I walked close to 16 total miles from Springer Mt. Shelter to Justus Creek. I got woken up by a light shining into my tent at 4am by a hiker that was “looking for the trail”. This day would turn out bad for me but I didn’t know it u til the 3rd day. I didn’t eat enough food and got dehydrated even more bi would pay for it the next day.

You're hiking during the winter??
@marcusvaldes if you have gear for it why not? I am section hiking not thru (yet)
I like the way you post hiking vids, man. Great content!
@@scout005 thank you. I’ll return around Christmas to do another section.
I always carry a little ziplock bag of coffeemate.
Hogback ridge shelter?
Nevermind standing Indian lol
Sandpine! I like a good storm, and the waterfalls were great. Standing by for your next adventure.
@@tommyh.8391 I do too but didn’t like it when I was trying to sleep and had a whole wall exposed. 🤣. I may not get out there again until around Christmas.
Why are you hiking in the winter?
Because I am alive! :-) I am section hiking and finally get join some of the big boys/girls club in hitting the AT and not just my local flat trail.
@ ok. Thought that you were a thru hiker
One day. I do have gear for winter but yea, I wouldn’t start in the winter. Maybe early feb but more likely a March thing whenever I can do it.
@ I follow a lot of hiking Vlogs. It seems like people are starting earlier. And flying through the trail. I have a lot of books in which the hikers would start in late March and finish in September.
I'm curious where you went, to get picked up. Back down to Deep Gap, or on to Mooney Gap? I'm hiking this section next year and was wondering about bail out points up to Albert Mountain.
I hiked the mile back to Deep Gap. Pick up from Mooney or the two after that cost more for a shuttle driver to pick you up from. Deep Gap is also far from main road but I was able to find a shuttle to pick me up there and take me to Green Drag for less than others that wanted over $100.
Sandpine! I like a good storm, and the waterfalls were great. Standing by for your next adventure.
Congrats on finishing Georgia!
Thanks.. let's go hit NC now.
Wonderful video you are doing now look forward to see u each day!
Thank you. I am back home and the next time I have off is after Christmas but not sure I will be up on the AT. May back on the FT since I am not done with that one.
Another excellent video. Love that music!
Thank you. I usually stick to one soundtrack per section hike series that I go out and do. I'll be switching in the next go around.
That was very nice of that guy giving you a home made wrist charm. Trail Magic.
True. now that you said it, thet was trail magic.
Yay! Congratulations! You completed Georgia. What a day. Plum Orchard Shelter to Standing Indian Shelter? Again, you did amazing.
Thanks.
Great Job!
Thanks!
What is your routine for ticks?
Reminding folks about Leave No Trace principles via UA-cam is not being a "Karen" imo. We all either care for the trail, in our own ways, or we risk degrading it.
Yea seeing that many MH bags left over pissed me off a bit. The smell they give after is so strong that it will probably attract bears and other critters too that shelter. No wonder they have "Bear activity" signs posted around it. It was way too much for me to carry out.
Sandpine! I like that coffee and cocoa idea. I’m going to try that here at home. The picture of your tent in the quiet foggy woods tells it all. When I’m car camping I always have a pee bottle in my sleeping bag, so I never have to get out in the cold. Lookin for the next video.
Yea I look forward to drinking my cafe-mocha every morning when I am out hiking. It also gives you extra calories for the day. Lol… I didn’t even realized I had not empty my pee bottle when I started recording. 🤣
Kelly's Knob was no joke climbing out of Addis Gap. And climbing out of Dick's Creek Gap is a challenge just as well. You did super amazing!!
@@midlifetravelers6151 I was glad to do those two with sort of fresh legs. But the climbs as soon as you enter North Carolina hit you right in the mouth. Makes GA climbs look easy.
LOVEN THE HIKE TK U SIR
@SandPine Great to meet you out on trail. Enjoyed the videos. Keep’em comin. All the best.
@@JBNOTLOST likewise. I see you have a series of vids going too. I’ll check them out. Good luck in your hike. I am not sure when I can get back up there again.
That was my brother you met on trail! He was so happy to run into you!
I love your videos. So informative and so much to see, including your meals. (Always include your meals. I'm a foodie person!) Are you considering an AT thru-hike? Buenas noches! (Is that right?)
@@lobstahgirl will do. I’m like many others that eat the same thing over and over again. A few variations but not many. Which is why I don’t record it. I would love to do a thru hike but that 8-5 thing still needed to pay bills. One day hopefully I will attempt it. Buenas noches is good night. I do my greeting in the am so is Buenos Dias. 😄
Definitely a mosquito 🦟 😂
That was a hard day of hiking, and then having to walk an extra mile for water? You hiked 13.5. You did amazing!
Thanks.. that was the easiest mile on the AT so far. That was by choice. I knew I could have stopped for water a mile back on a steep source. But I choose the mile road walk instead as it was easy walking. I actually saw a clearing an an abandoned structure by the water source. It wast too dark to take pictures of it.
Loved this video (cool background music)! So much to see, especially that mosquito. Thank you, SandPine!
Thanks. I purposely left the soundtrack music volume low since I got a lot of comments on last set of vids about it. Yea the early winter conditions bring other aspects of the trail. The next day was a rainy foggy day that made me really enjoy my time outdoors more. I’ll post that vid shortly.
@@sandpine99 Could you spell your "good morning" greeting so I can use it when greeting you back? I like it so much better than the typical greeting. Looking forward to that rainy foggy day video.
@@lobstahgirl 🤣. Is “Good morning, good morning… Buenos Dias, Buenos Dias!” Just 2 English and 2 Spanish good morning greetings. 😄🕺
@@sandpine99 Love it! Buenos Dias it is. Thank you SandPine!
Sandpine! How did that sleeping bag work out, warm enough? Mmmm…..Mountain House. My favorites are Chili Mac, Chicken Noodle Casserole, and Breakfast Skillet with a handful of shredded cheese stirred in. My wife has experimented with various ways to cook all of them. Which ones did you carry? Like em?
Both my OV quilt and my Nemo Disco sleeping bag are 15 degrees and way too warm. I liked not having a draft when I twist and turn all night. But I like the freedom of the quilt. So I think a Zenbivy may be in my future. I’ll explain this better on the next two videos once I post them. My goto meal on trail is chicken Raman with spam. My favorite freeze dry meal is Peak Performance chicken Alfredo. But I can’t afford those all the time. The beef stroganoff in the mountain house is what I had on 3rd day. I did have a chili Mac with me as well but didn’t get to it.
What kind of camera are you using?
Hi Tom... Just my iPhone 16 pro. I didn't get the 1TB one and kicking myself for now. I got the 512G so I have too limit how many videos I shoot in 4K at 30 fps. Which his why I was shooting in 1080P but UA-cam has me in 4k blocking jail. Won't let me load vids in 4K. They've all been reduced to 1080P.
@ The 16 Pro is a good unit. I would recommend not pointing it towards the sun and change the white balance, if possible, to darken the images a little, which is something I had to learn. No need to shoot anything 4k for YT. Can’t wait for your next long hike.
@ is there something you change on your phone or is that something you do on the video editing software. What are you using to edit your videos with?
Just found you. Following now! I, too, suffered thru that trek in & out of Whitley Gap Shelter. I had a bad knee and zeroed there. Thanks for this video!!
OMG... Hey TwoSisters, I am one of your subscribers. I've followed your hikes. I do remember the video where we could clearly see you were in pain with your knees. I didn't know that was Wiley Gap. I found your channel when you did the announcement vid and CandyMama posted it. Sorry to hear about your sister not being able to join you. I hope you two get to try it again. Thanks for visiting.
@sandpine99 Awww thanks! My sister and I might be hiking again soon and will put up videos. Hike on! Stay safe! Stay upright!
Would you happen to know a resource that lists all the shuttles and the areas they cover?
I have seen lists in some sites but I just use FarOut for the locations I’ll be in and usually the shuttles themselves add comments to some of the wave points you will be at. You. An also check Facebook groups like at hikers, at section hikers, at hikers class of 2024 or 2025. I bet if you google some they will come up. I used Bandit (www.mountaintrailsshuttles.com). He operates from atl airport up to north side of the smokies. Another thing you can do is if you plan on using a hostel, call them first as most offer pick up and drop off. If not they can recommend a shuttle for you. That may be best option.
Can't watch because of the music !!!!
Made it slightly better on day 5 and after videos. Check it out and let me know.
Focus on eating protein.
Yup.. just the heartburn and appetite issue while stuck for 3 days with the food you have sometimes becomes an issue. I changed my food at Neel Gap and the other 3 days were better.
had the same issue with my EE quilt. switched to Zenbivy and have not looked back
I have eyeballed the zenbivy. Specially the ultra light version they recently cam up with. But the price is a bit out of my range.
@@sandpine99 felt the same way and went with the Light bed just a little heavier .
@j3hikes444 look at them now. Seems like they will have a sale for Black Friday. I have narrow it down to the zenviby light bed or the sea to summer spark full sleeping bag.
Nice series. Hope to see more of your hike as you continue.
You're really going to have to learn to poop in the woods and not rely on a privy. Otherwise, this is going to be an uncomfortable trip for you.😁
LOL... trust me, no issues with doing it in the woods. I was just stating how convenient it is to use the privy. I am not used to seeing these many "bathrooms" on a trail. No such things where I normally hike. Nothing like pooping with a view at top of a mountain. Besides who wants to deal with the smell and higher risk of Nora virus spread. :-).
Thank you!! 💚 :O)
That is always a hard call for me too. Knowing what I can handle in a day in elevation. Wise words you have authored.
yup.. every day you are out there is different. Some days you can climb more than others. But if you don't hydrate and eat properly, it catches up to you quickly.
Thanks for another nice video.
How do you handle your car situation on a hike like this?
For section hike, I drive to where I think I am going to end the hike, then arrange for a shuttle to take me to the start. Then I hike to my car. I didn't make it that far this time, so I called the same shuttle to get me at another bailout point. So yea some pre-planning needed. FarOut app is your friend.
@@sandpine99 Copy. Thanks for your reply. Hope you're feeling better.
Great section hike! Doing GA is what hooked my husband and me! We are now all the way to Harper’s Ferry and hope to finish the rest of the trail this summer. (He just retired). Congrats on a beautiful hike!
Congrats on the retirement and the hiking. Yea that is me for now. Week long section hiking here and there. Until I retire myself. 🙂
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS I FEEL LIKE IM WALKN IN THE LEAVES WITH U NOW TK U
@@MawMaw_57 thank you. I actually enjoy iphonography more than videos. For some reason I didn’t take as many shots this time.
Enjoyed watching your section hike and looking forward to your next one!
@@BlazingBursons thank you. I am trying to get out there on the AT for thanksgiving week. But if not, I may be on the Florida trail. I am up to 600 miles on that one.
I like your little friend traveling with you! Do you like your sleep mat?
@@SheGoneAgain his name is Memin. Is a mini-mini squishmallow that I stole from my daughter. Reminds me of home and someone to keep me company. 😄 I do like the Nemo Tensor but I realized it’s a bit noisy since I move a lot. I don’t get good sleep on trail unless I am really tired. I may go out with my REI helix next time.
"Room service" . . . hahaha! Really enjoying your videos. Thank you for sharing!
@@lobstahgirl lol… it was very enjoyable sitting there on my pad and watching the limited view of the sunrise. My mind was going over stuff which is why I get out there.
I’ve always thought how nice the fall leaves look on the trees but, your video showing the leaves on the ground near your first camp were stunning. Lots of red and burgundy just beautiful. Thanks for sharing !
@@hope2someday691 yes that spot was really nice with lots of reds. I wish I had more purples and deep oranges but that section caught my eye. I wish I had taken more photos but some spots I was nose to the grinder in just looking where to step and catching my breath. 🤣
Sounds like classic symptoms of GERD. Try starting each day with omeprazole. Your doctor may recommend prescription strength.
@@timothyh.1460 thanks. I got a visit coming up and will be asking for prescription strength meds now. Just in case it flairs up again. It had never affected me like this before for multi days. Specially when I needed to eat and was stuck with what I had.
Hey Sandpine! You seem like a lovely person and I'm going to enjoy your journey.....but PLEASE lose the repetitive music! ha It's totally annoying and it actually interferes with your voice. I think lots of folks would just love to hear your voice and the sounds of you walking the trail. Just my opinion.
@@tinchina85 thanks for the suggestion. Please see day 5. I fixed the audio track starting with that video. I use free video editor and didn’t do a good job at lowering the volume. But I bet the music is better than my heavy mouth breathing as I go up climb and I’m almost dying. lol….
Love the video, thanks for sharing
Enjoyed your film of this hike. I did mute the sound , that music after a few minutes gets repetitious and annoying , might just be me. After all this is your video and my mute button works quite well , enjoy the hike as you go along. The hike is what matters , the destination doesn't.
@@Oldsparkey lol.. yes that mute button come in handy. Specially when I am struggling to get air in climbs and I’m recording myself talking. 🤣. See day 5 please. I fixed the audio track then.
I like the video. Not to be mean, but you should probably remove the background music from your videos. I decided not to subscribe. Also maybe talk more about why you are out there and how much you are planning on doing. Maybe you did talk about it but I couldn’t watch the whole video because of the music.😮
@@karenm1034 thanks for your comment. I fixed that issue starting with day 5. Take a look at it. It should be better. I assumed iMovie on IOs 18 was the same as before. It added the soundtrack at 100% volunme by default. I have to manually turn it down now.
Thr music is much better!! Thanks for sharing 😊
@@wandering_butnotlost thanks. Sorry I should have scan the first 4 videos more before posting them. It even bothers me. The song I picked is an annoying one too. I usually stick to one soundtrack for all the videos I do on each section. I’ll never use that one again. 😄
Just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. I’ll have to go back and watch some of your previous content. I too suffer from heartburn from time to time. Over the years I discovered that MSG is a major contractor. I notice you burger, fries and Ketchup. For me Ketchup is one of the worst foods I can eat. When my heartburn is flaring up noodles are a close second as they are also packing a bunch of MSG.
@@hope2someday691 thanks for the heads up. Those foods never affected me before. I think it was another medicine I am taking but I will be getting it check out to make sure is not something more serious. Heartburn never affected me before like this. It was weird.
Just found your channel!! What was your start date?
@@outdoors_life7544 I was only out for a 7 day section hike. That is how I will be tackling the AT for now until I can take 6 months off for a thru hike attempt.
