To those of us that experienced it, nothing comes close to that roller coaster ride called Team Canada '72. BTW, Gordie Howe didn't jump to the WHA, he retired in 1971. Even though I know Rick Hansen, to be honest I'm not sure he and Terry Fox qualify as sporting events. Sport is defined as an individual or team competing against another. Maybe call them "achievements" or "performances" for example. Just an observation, don't get mad.

Being alive and (barely) old enough to be aware of what was going on, the 1972 summit series was definetly the one time canada stopped moving to follow a sporting event in my lifetime. It really did seem the cold war was being decided on the ice, were we better then the soviets? Losing so badly at the start was shocking, shameful and you have to remember these were our best and they were humiliated on ice by "amatures!" (funny but they were mostly soldiers whos military tasks included...well, ice hockey) That goalie Tretiak was incredible and his style was not like the NHL at all, the teamwork looked more like synchronized skating made out of clockwork. When the team came back to win it the relief and pride swept the country. Even the olympics as big as they seem I don't think have ever had the same attention as that one simple series of hockey games. (I went and looked it up, they claim 72.7% of canadians watched the final game. 3k of them showed up to watch it live) Well done piece, I don't follow sports enough to know half of it but it was well done.
