You have to admire a team that can get the score back to 0-0 after trailing 1-0 and then have the fortitude after going down 2-1 to battle back and once again get the game back to 1-0. #ShuffleMode

RIP play by play man Joe Boyle. Joe was sports anchor for WTCN channel 11 in the Twin Cities and play by play on Twins TV games throughout the 1970s.

Really don't understand why the Gophers weren't made to maroon for this game. Would have made for a better TV experience. That being said, this is still excellent footage!

The era when only 4 teams made the NCAA Championship. Two from the WCHA and 2 from the ECAC. The old CCHA wasn't highly regarded at this time and Hockey East hadn't been formed yet. All of the Hockey East schools that formed the league were in the ECAC.

The NCAA should honestly change from full cages/shields to visors. I mean, do any of the players in the Canadian Hockey League that are 18 or older wear full face shields? Do any of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport teams wear face shields for its hockey players? NO! So why does the National Collegiate Athletic Association still have its hockey players, most of whom are 18 or older, wear cages or face shields? It makes no sense!

So the same year the cages were made mandatory in college hockey was the same year that helmets were mandatory for all new NHL players (those that signed their contracts before June 1, 1979 could continue to play bareheaded if they wanted to).

this makes players unable to avoid open ice hits because they can't see what's going on around them. Parker believes the face mask was made mandatory because of fears the NCAA had of suits being initiated against them for eye injuries. In fact , Parker maintains, there is now more danger of that happening.

yeah, the full face mask or cage was made mandatory beginning the season 1979-80. I remember because I was a student at Boston U. that year and then coach Jack Parker hated the new rule. To this day he maintains that it changed college hockey for the worst because players felt invulnerable with it and it in fact made them VERY vulnerable because it limited their vision because now players have to constantly look down for the puck.

Went to this game Rented an RV Drove to St Louis. Went up Arch. Toured AB Brewery Asked to leave after overstaying our welcome. Switched to Miller Made it to final game Got police escort to after game party at Holiday Inn. Partied til chandelier crashed on floor & they ran out of beverage Drove all night back to Tech In Illinois a bed broke & crashed on the driver. I was sleeping in the stairwell. Don’t recall if I made it to class Monday. Probably more but I’ve forgotten the good parts

Even tho every NMU Wildcat fan knows that TECH STILL SUCKS!!!, I do wish WLUC TV6 would show some hockey from time to time. Will never happen in this day of age.

@bpbaillod I absolutely agree. In fact I'm really amazed at how well preserved the footage is. For any college hockey game played before 1980 has a picture that looks this good is amazing. What market is "Channel 6". St. Louis local?

If you think this video is of unwatchable quality, you obviously weren't alive in 1975. I watched this game on TV at the time and this video looks better than what I saw in my living room in the Copper Country.

Was the 1977 game televised as well? Wisconsin beats Michigan in overtime in one of the last years of Olympia before the Red Wings moved to Joe Louis Arena.
