Years ago…maybe 45…I took a course at the University of Southern California called Energy Issues and Options. The USA had just gone through gasoline shortages and this was a big issue. One of the major points of the entire course was that the solution of the energy problems was not a single source of energy, but all of them. For all the naysayers that come out against electric, they are either partisan defending their economic turf, or they are having a knee jerk reaction to all of it. With a background in economics, I have come to fully appreciate the way economies reach equilibrium on their own if left alone. There are clear advantages to all energy sources and it just depends upon the situation and location. As a private pilot, I really look forward to the possibility of increased battery density which will allow more widespread use of electric airplanes. Why? For one, a much more reliable and higher power motor. Jet and turboprop engines are so much more reliable than piston engines. Secondly, the ability to produce one’s own power via solar panels yields much greater independence which most pilots seem to be attracted to: that is one reason they love flying. It is not likely that electric will come to aviation in a rapid manner, but there are certainly advantages to it that will give it a place.
