Your Clones Will NEVER Look Boring Again!
Apologies for the big delay in getting this video out! Having a baby and starting a new job can do that to you I guess. Anyways, welcome back! Glad to see you! Today I'm going to be painting up one of my Phase 1 Clone Troopers and taking him from a fresh "Shiny" to a battle-hardened member of the 212th Attack Battalion that served with Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Clone Wars.
I'll be showing how I add the orange detail markings, as well as how I add some scratches and paint chipping to his armor for a nice weathered and battle damaged look!

    • @ShinisTabletopAdventures
      @ShinisTabletopAdventures 3 місяці тому

      @@ΒασιληςΠαπανικολάου-φ7ω in most cases to get quality like this, you're going to need a resin printer. I've used both Elegoo and Anycubic printers with good success. A lot of them are pretty similar in build quality and how they function, I think the main thing you're paying for is size of the printer and resolution. Unfortunately, none of the resin printers are necessarily easy to use for someone new to 3D printing. There are a lot of safety issues to consider as well. The resins used are toxic, and you have to take precautions handling them. Some people are also extremely sensitive to both the resin and the fumes it puts off. It's never good to breathe the fumes, you want it to be in a well ventilated area, wear gloves any time you are working with it, and try to never get it on your skin. Some people develop rashes immediately, others can tolerate minor skin contact a few times before having problems, but again, it's toxic and you really don't want it on your skin. I would highly suggest watching some 3D printing UA-cam channels, especially ones that focus on resin printers and look into safely using them!

    • @ShinisTabletopAdventures

      @@guysmith6039 Another tip to help with that as well, is don't wash the whole figure! I doused these guys for the video, and that's how a lot of beginners do it at first. It isn't wrong per se, just inefficient. A better way to do it is to only place the wash in the areas you actually want darkened. Try to only get it in the folds, grooves, recesses, etc. This way you won't have to come back and do as much highlighting, or you can push your highlights even farther for even more contrast! Hope that helps some! Happy painting!

    Here's a fun trick. If you thin contrasts and washes with Lahmium medium, and pre-treat spots you are looking to recess shade with pure Lahmium before going in with your mix, it will make your mix run into the recesses amd pull away from the surfaces AGRESSIVELY, preventing a ton of staining

      @Off_White247 4 місяці тому

      @@ShinisTabletopAdventures I personally use a mix of apothicary white, spave wolves grey and Lahmium medium with this technique to shade white armor on things like my apothecaries. If I'm trying to do a shadowed area instead of just recess shading, I lower the amount of Lahmium or swap it for contrast, and dont pre treat the area, then work from the outer edge of the shadow into the recesses, so it slightly stains the surface, but still pools in the recesses. With a liiiittle medium tinkering, contrast and speed paints essentially give you easy access to almost limitless wash colours, it's just a mater of controlling the level of surface staining

    What demotivates me is when my friends complain that I have way too many projects going on and yes it is maybe too many for them, but I need to jump between different projects to feel motivated. And I hate the expression "gray pile of shame" I think yours was much better "gray pile of potential". Then the fact that I don't have the opportunity to have a dedicated hobby space is also demotivating, because right now I have all my colors in a big box and it's hopeless to keep them in order so half the time is spent looking for the color I need, but I have worked out an okay system where I look up all the tools I need for a specific project and put them together with it, but when I have several projects that use the same color, I have to look for the color in the project boxes , but it's "only" 2-4 boxes and I usually keep track of which box it's in.

    • @ShinisTabletopAdventures
      @ShinisTabletopAdventures 4 місяці тому

      I understand the demotivation! I've been shrinking my space to make more room for my wife's computer/office space since she used to use the spare bedroom. I don't think having a "pile of potential" is a bad thing at all, as long as it doesn't get too out of control. Most of my models are at least built so I can play with them, but a lot is unpainted. It takes me a lot longer to paint something than it does to build it! I also understand jumping between projects! I like to build and paint minis from all sorts of different games!

    I want my gold statue (metal gold paint) to get some shades while still keeping it pretty shiny... What to use?

    • @ShinisTabletopAdventures
      @ShinisTabletopAdventures 5 місяців тому

      If you've already painted it metallic gold, I think I would use a similar method to what I've done in this video. Take some Strong Tone Wash, or maybe Agrax Earthshade if you prefer Citadel Paints. Those colors tend to do pretty good as a wash for gold metallics specifically! You can probably wash pretty much the entire statue to really make the details pop, and make sure to not let it pool too much on raised areas or large smooth surfaces. You can dab your brush on a paper towel or something to dry it out a bit, then dab it on the pooled areas to soak some of it back up. Lastly, I would go back over it with either the same gold or an even brighter gold to add some highlights to the most raised edges. This combined with the wash will add some really nice contrast and help the statue look better than just flat gold. I hope this helps!

    • @ShinisTabletopAdventures
      @ShinisTabletopAdventures 5 місяців тому

      @@castrodaniel58 that is a great question! So primer isn't required in most cases, but it can still help a lot and I highly recommend it! It'll help your paints adhere better, and if you handle your minis a lot for tabletop games, it'll help the paint from rubbing off as easy. Though you can also use a varnish to help protect them instead! There are brush on primers that work decently well if you live in an area where spray cans aren't feasible. I hope that helps! I thought washes were magic when I started, but years later I've reached a point where I honestly think they almost always look horrible. The overexaggerated, oily looking shadows they create, just look terrible to me after seeing so much of what people can do with glazing and proper technique. And while edge highlighting and going back over reduce this, I still think it just doesn't look right. I think both oils and enamels are better looking at least and are easier to clean up, highly recommend those to people who are starting to lose that magic love for washes.

    I haven’t finished the video yet, but I just had to say that this video is exactly what I need to see. I don’t have room for a dedicated painting desk so I’ll definitely check out that portable one you mentioned. When it comes to reducing obstacles to painting, things that have worked for me are keeping all of my supplies in a small tote bag - my wet palette, brushes, jar for water, and just the paints I know I’ll need for the current stage of the models I’m working on (for example, just the basecoat colors). I also try to accept that l’m not always in the mood to paint, but doing any part of the hobby counts, like assembling even one model. Top of my list of things to get now is a good natural light lamp that I can fairly easily move when I’m done painting.

    • @ShinisTabletopAdventures
      @ShinisTabletopAdventures 7 місяців тому

      I'm glad the video resonated! Keeping that small tote bag is a great idea! I sometimes bring a little carrying case with just a few models, some paints, brushes, small wet palette, etc. I do think with what you're currently bringing, you might really like what Frontier Wargaming offers! I'm not sponsored or anything, I just think it's a neat product and I've been wanting to save up and get one myself. I probably should put a link in the description now that I think about it lol. That case has an optional add on for an LED light bar too. Not sure how good it is, but might be worth a try. Lastly, I totally agree on sometimes just assembling some models is worth our time. I may not feel like getting my stuff out to paint, maybe I'm not in the mood. Clipping out some bits and flying them together though? I can do that almost any time.

    Yay! As someone who's been interested in painting minitures but scared to start, this is perfect for me. Thanks for posting!

      You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Welcome to the hobby! Some advice to start: Don't go buy a bunch of big paint sets. Also don't buy a whole ton of miniatures. It's really easy to get overwhelmed by it all, especially at first! Start small with a starter set for painting, and then just one or a handful of minis. Paint them and have fun! They probably won't be perfect, but that's okay! You painted them and had fun!

      Ah good! I forget sometimes since it can be several hours, days, and sometimes weeks in between my pre-game, the battle, and post game sessions. I don't always have a lot of time to play or record, so I do it in sections when I can. Thanks for watching!

      @@ShinisTabletopAdventures honestly though i really don't see an advantage to no wet pallate, i made mine out of literal garbage (fast food container, wet paper towels, parchment) for the options it gives you it's kinda unbeatable

      @@datb0013 no I completely agree! I use one pretty much all the time! I love it! I just wanted to show a brand new painter that they didn't necessarily need to go buy a new tool or DIY their own. It's not a required item, just a really useful one!
