What do I do if I add way too much sodium silicate to a glaze
Have you ever had a glaze that didn't seem to thin down, even when you kept adding water? Sometimes this is an indication that your glaze needs to be deflocculated.
Deflocculating can lower a glaze's viscosity without adding extra water. This can help prevent shrinkage and crawling, especially in glazes with high clay content.
Sodium silicate is a deflocculant that is often recommended for these types of glazes, but there's a very thin line between not enough and way too much sodium silicate. If you cross that line, you may end up with unusable glaze pudding.
To learn more about sodium silicate and other deflocculants, watch this video.

Doesn't high speed mixing create bubbles in the glaze
Переглядів 71День тому
We are always told to high speed mix our glazes, but won't that lead to bubbles and pinholes and other problems? What about store bought pints of glazes that we can't fit a high-speed mixer into? Can we use a small milk frother? Can we just shake them up? What do we do about all the bubbles??? To understand whether bubbles in your glaze are likely (or even un-likely) to cause problems in your f...
How long will a five gallon glaze bucket stay homogenized for?
Переглядів 7114 днів тому
How long will your glaze stay suspended for after stirring? How often should you be stirring your glaze throughout the glazing process? To understand the importance of mixing your glazes really well for improved glaze application, watch this video. If I sieve my glaze, am I sieving out good particles?
Переглядів 8321 день тому
Why do we sieve glazes? Is it necessary? Will we be removing things the glaze needs? I'm someone who probably sieves my glazes more than most potters. I even sieve my clay recycling. To find out why, and to understand the benefits of sieving your glazes and reclaim buckets, watch this video where I answer these questions. This question was asked and answered during my free class: Strategic Glaz...
If your glaze freezes is it still ok?
Переглядів 70Місяць тому
What happens when glazes freeze? We are often told to prevent our clay from freezing, but what about glazes? Freezing pottery studios aren't a concern in many parts of the world, but here in Canada, we need to consider these things. If freezing is a concern for you, check out this video where where I answer these questions. This question was asked and answered during my free class: Strategic G...
Does a lower bisque temp = more pores?
Переглядів 132Місяць тому
Have you ever wondered how to choose your bisque temperature? What difference does it make? Should you change your bisque temperature? One of the main properties that changes with temperature is the porosity of the bisque. More pores can hold more water during glaze application. This can help or hinder you, depending on what your current situation is. To understand how the temperature of your b...
Stir test - how homogenized is your glaze?
Переглядів 61Місяць тому
How much do you mix your glaze before glazing? Do you stir manually or high-speed mix? How do you know when your glaze is homogenized so you can stop mixing and start glazing? It's important that our glazes are mixed really well before glazing so all the water isn't at the top of the bucket with most of the heavy glaze materials still sitting at the bottom. To understand how long you need to st...
How does thickness of piece affect the glaze?
Переглядів 103Місяць тому
How does the thickness of a piece affect glaze application? It can be challenging to achieve consistent glaze results, even when using the same glaze over and over. One of the factors that can affect your glaze application is the thickness of the piece that you're glazing. Many of us focus on how long we hold a piece in the glaze for, but we also need to consider the thickness of our bisque,...

You're a wonderful contributor to the ceramic world! <3
hi sue - New to all of this and just got an electric rhode kiln...the supplier told me I dont need witness cones as there is an element in the floor and its so well insulated - and the controller is very reliable. Wondered what you thought of that given you advise cones for every firing, BTW I am loving all your videos - thx so much for sharing your knowledge.
Wonderful video, thank you!
I would much rather read this myself than watch someone read!
Yes! 🙌 I’m team Sieve at 120 🎉 I get fewer glaze defects and better underglaze application. I sieve both glaze and UGs.
Newbie here , what about (number) would I enter to make average batch …
So interesting! Thank you for sharing 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been promoting you on my last two vids. There is some rigor in learning about glaze and how to mix and test your own; but its not all that difficult. It really bothers me that so many emerging potters avoid glaze and only purchase prepared glaze. I have two relatively new potters in my family that are completely dependent on commercial glaze. After 56 years in mud I just don't understand; I've never used prepared glaze. Its so limiting.
Yes, I think people think commercial glazes are easier or more straight forward but I find they are very limiting and mixing glazes is so rewarding! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks for posting. I enjoy your videos. Very informative.
Thanks for watching!
Im new to ceramics and appreciate this nerdy break down
Do you mix your own glazes or buy them?
Not on air bubbles but can your clay piece be too dry to kiln fire? Like 2 months old bone dry clay pieces?
No, it can't be too dry. The dry-er the better.
@@suemcleodceramics thank you
Thank you so much for explaining that so clearly. I’m such a beginner that I wouldn’t know where to start to find the ingredients to substitute. For example we can’t get Gertsey Borate in the UK. Do you have a video or information about what we can use to substitute ?
I don't have a video but look for Gillespie Borate or ulexite or calcium borate frits to use as your source of boron
Thanks so much for that. I’m just starting out - so have so many questions. Where can I find out information about the chart and how best to interpret it ?
Hello
How could i pay you for advice on a glaze recipe i need ? Ill pay your cost . I need a high melting point cone 10 or so glaze for industrial applications . No Iron allowed . you can find me in my video descriptions.
Can you post a video of how you gave set up the digital pyrometer please?
Yes I can see and hear you, can you tell me what the difference is from a dipping clear glaze and brush on. ps I am still making😅 everything! And am 89
As per Demib Pottery. Thank you confirming his method
I like how a witness cone (near peep hole) is good back up plan and really helps with adjustments over each firing. Safety first observe witness cone and shut off kiln manually! She really explains scenarios of what can go wrong. Thanks again firthis video most helpful!
fantastic, thank you
Thank you!
It's the same for me in Belgium , 7 years of working whith the clay at school but nothing on the enamels ... The first time I've seen a Seger formulation I say in my mind: how can I heat that ??? Fortunately whist the time I can now understand what is it . Sorry fgor my bad English but it isn't my mother langage ...
I was thinking if someone could invent/create/etc. a ceramic coffee cup that had air enclosed w/i so that it would be insulated it would be a money maker. Hope to either find one or give someone the idea to "make it so".
Thank you for these easy to follow directions. I will be making a damp box for sure.
be careful ever using your fingers to dig or mix a settled glaze -- you will loose your fingernail's tips in a matter of seconds 😳
You are so very cool!
Very informative and an amazing video thank you thank you so much.
Gracias por estos tutoriales de glazy, me gustaría saber leer el mapa stull. Si haces un vídeo de cómo interpretar el mapa, súper agradecida ❤
Myriam, from Uruguay How to turn matte glaze into glossy?
Hi Sue, i have been following and listening to your courses online, just wanted your perspective, is there an easy way to move cone 6 glazes to cone 7 using Stulls map
Hello
That’s great. My biggest issue, however, is with knowing what sg to aim for … I havent been able to find guidance around it for beginners yet :(
i missed something -- how did u get the 561 grams
thanks
Hello
I'm here. Trevor
Thank you Sue!!!
Watching from Gilbert, Arizona.
Hi Sue, What would you recommend for a water system if you don't have running water for this process? I'm considering doing the 3 bucket method for my water system, but how could I adapt that to coincide with your reclaim method? Thanks for your video! It's SUPER helpful for those making a home studio.
I don't have running water either, I just fill buckets with water and use various buckets for fresh water, rinsing my hands, throwing etc.
So how much saturated Epsom salt to add to glaze? Is it based on dry weight of glaze and ml of saturated Epsom? A percentage? Thank you! Suzy
Thank you! I didn’t want to hear, but, I hear ya!
Thank you so much! I was doing it wrong! I have been separating bucket water from scraps thinking I was speeding it up!
Thank you so much for sharing!!! I’m wondering if there’s any tricks to mixing up a new batch of glaze and then adding the remains of the older batch of same glaze together? I had Infinite Clear, Laguna, 2 lb mixed and it was fine. I made a new batch and then stirred in The old batch and now have severe hard panning. Thank you again!
This was helpful, thank you! (Coincidentally watched this in the morning on the West Coast 2 years after it was posted)
Does anyone know if these washes work well for glass fusing? 1600F
Thank you for your video. I was at my wits end with a bucket of glaze. The epsom salt water worked very well. I followed your instructions and now all is well. Thank you
Nice! My kiln arrives in October, so I am getting ready to set up my pottery studio 'from scratch'. I have decided to 'make my own' glazes, so your Glazy intro is very exciting for this 'newbie'. I'm looking forward to SOMEday have something interesting to contribute.
Just get straight to the video. Bull shit
Thanks for linking this video in your email. I had not seen this one before. Very helpful.
I am retired, but have pottery students still, and find, and send yr informative information on for the much value to pass on. Keep doing what you do.
