Understanding contours
Переглядів 2,3 тис.4 роки тому
Contours are those brown lines on a map that join areas of equal height. They can be quite confusing to interpret so in this video I aim to simplify things for you to gain a better understanding. There is a exercise to test your contour interpretation on my blog at www.freedom-outdoors.co.uk/understanding-contours/
How to take a bearing.
Переглядів 1 тис.4 роки тому
In this video I look at how to take a bearing on the map and how to give or follow a given bearing. I also talk about the different kinds of north: Grid, true and magnetic and discuss magnetic variation. If you want an exercise to practise using your compass and walking on bearings have a look at my blog post. www.freedom-outdoors.co.uk/practicing-pacing-and-bearings-in-your-local-park-part-1/
How to measure distance by pacing.
Переглядів 14 тис.4 роки тому
Pacing involves knowing how many steps it takes you to walk 100m. It can be a very accurate way to measure distance over fairly short sections (a few hundred metres) , particularly over easy terrain. In this video I talk through how I go about using pacing to measure distance when I'm walking. I chat though what I do and discuss how to cope when the terrain gets more tricky.
How to work out the timings for a walking route.
Переглядів 1,3 тис.4 роки тому
In this video I look at measuring distances on a map using a compass and using that knowledge to work out how long a route will take us. I look at measuring on different scale OS maps and using a timings card.
How to take a grid reference.
Переглядів 8434 роки тому
In this short video I explain how to take a 6 figure grid reference. I then set a few questions at the end so that you can check your understanding.
How to: Walk on a bearing accurately
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 роки тому
In this video I talk through some tips for walking on a bearing accurately. I chat about some route choice tactics and explain some pointers that will help you follow a compass bearing accurately. www.freedom-outdoors.co.uk I run Mountain Training courses as well as courses and guided days out in a variety of activities. Climbing, scrambling, navigation, mountain biking, sea kayaking...
Rope choice for Mountain Leaders

Hi. Thanks for concise video on nav at ML. You've taken the fear out of it for me. Yes, it's a good way to look at it, cognisance rather than always absolute. I've a very good MS and will get chance to train for leader grade at a certain point shortly.

Examples of things I was expected to find on assesment. An old mine drift about 2m wide 3m deep and 10m long, shown on the map as a blip in a contour line (1:25K), nice clear day form a summit 250m above and 900m away - relatively easy. An old mine shelf, 20m+ wide 200m long and flat in an otherwise resonably steep sloping hillside, shown as kinks in the contour lines (1 :50K), from 2km away approx same altitude, typicaly nasty welsh day, lumpy terrain - Quite a challange, go lucky, hit it dead on the end, first go - found out afterwards, because of its size fail to find this one and fail.....you could have a bash at it for an hour or so and still be ok though, didn't need to just walk on to it.

Real world work example - Col de la Seigne between France and Italy - No Phone reception and no downloaded maps so couldn't just cheat n use an app. Its 1km wide and 5km deep but with some cliffs you'd like to avoid. Early season so its all snow, the cloud drops and you can only see 5 of your group of 12 who are all near anough to touch each other! - General bearing, keep a close eye on the aspect of your terrain vs bearing - stubbed my toe on the trig point! It may be a 1km wide col, but its bowl shaped all the way.

    • @FreedomOutdoorsLlanberis

I guess that would work well as long as the sand is quite hard. You would probably do less steps in soft sand.
