2024 Fast Fitty "The Speedy 36mi" Michigan Gravel Race Series
Tough conditions with wind, steady rain a little over quarter of the way in. Missed the break being to lazy with positioning on the single speed.

2024 Cowpie Classic Gravel Race Short Haul (Michigan Gravel Race Series)

Managed to get a decent video racing for the win in single speed at Cowpie Classic. This year they split fat bike and single speed from Open/Elite wave. If you are looking for footage of that @uptheroad1 and @lhubby199 has great footage. I have great footage of the women's short haul finish/overall in this video. Our wave catches them at roughly 1:22:46 into the video and ride with them for the...

Video footage from the 10AM expert start wave. Ran single speed with a 28/16. I would say I probably left atleast a couple minutes out on course being spun out. If I do it again I'll run 34/17.

I'm just throwing up my raw video from the race April 20, 2024. Raced single speed. Gearing was 44/17. With about 10 miles to go my seat post slipped down and it became really hard to spin/hold high speed. Ended up getting caught and passed for second place in Single Speed category with about a mile to go :-/ I apologize for the lens protector shattering at 56 minutes in. Hopefully it isn't too...

Added ride data for the first time. I need to do a better job of syncing and had some weird issues with the video shrinking down at the end. I'll try and do better for the next. First time racing The Divide. It is a very fun race. I would definitely recommend running 40mm or wider if your frame can handle it on this course.

This is the full video I took at the Cow Pie Classic. I was 2nd in AG, 23rd Overall. Its awesome to see this event growing. I feel its the perfect blend of adventure with gravel, farms, and roads. The race does a great job with making it lucrative enough to pull some of the monster racers from the area to challenge for money, and approachable enough for recreation and sport riders to come out i...

Managed to be late to the start line and was buried in the back of the race. The dust and extreme congestion led to a decent amount of wrecks. I burnt numerous matches trying to move up through the wrecks. Looking back I should have been a little more patient in waiting for the race work its self out. Also looking back I regret passing on Gun Lake Road. I didn't remember/realize it was no pass ...

Another race in the Michigan Gravel Race Series. This video is in 3x speed and my battery only made it a little over an hour into the race. Notes on Race: Used my Specialized Tarmac since I was still waiting on components for my gravel bike build. I was using GP5000tl 32c tires. I only had a 1x setup with a 50T front chainring and cassette gearing was 10-33. Cadence was grindier than I would ha...

Most of the video is 3x speed except the start and a couple of highlights. Managed to capture a decent amount of the carnage on Mann road at the start of the race. Also part of the aftermath of a former teammate getting hit by a deer. Lastly we forced train break. Didn't have enough battery to get the last 20 minutes of the race.

    First off, Michigan gravel courses are just absolutely STUNNING. Hands down cooler than anything I've seen in California. Second - I dont know if the field was just not pushing it or the fat tire rider just had the guns to keep that heavy bike in the mix. I was shocked to see a fat-tire bike make the final selection. Third - how is it that the MDR team had what looked to be 5 riders in that break and couldnt get organized to set-up a text book sprint to weed out the field? Were they racing against each other? Maybe I dont understand the tactics of gravel and I'm conflating road race strategy into my thinking. It seems to me that MDR should have went to the front and drilled it for their fastest guy. At any rate _ great vid. It made me homesick and wish I had a gravel rig.

    • @thecman02
      @thecman02 11 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching. Michigan gravel racing scene is quite good. I'll give you my thoughts on your comments. The fat tire cyclist, Steve Kunst, is a very strong cyclist. He changed over to fat tire for the season to try something new for the gravel series. He excels at longer distance and has quiet the aerobic engine. He was third place overall in MGRS Long Course in 2021. Talking to him post race he said he was dangling on for dear life multiple times. I really regret not getting the start of this race. MDR had quite the presence at the race. Luke Hubbard (@lhubby199) had a chance at taking the overall. He had won two straight races going into this race. I'm not sure how he was feeling going into the race. I know the previous mountain bike race he had to pull out, and I forgot to ask him what happened. This season he seemed to either be hot or cold at races. I'm not sure if maybe he was feeling fatigue or burnout from the season (March to Basically first week in November), but he was struggling a little bit on this day. His teammates did work early and even towards the end just making sure he didn't fall out of the selection. Also, the team strengths lean more heavily towards mountain biking and technical riding and burst power. Team Turbo strengths are geared more towards classic road cycling. The guy Luke had to beat has an enormous threshold power so he usually isn't going to be caught out on positioning at the end of races. You are right on the money with your thoughts. Road racing tactics tend to shine more often then not in the less technical gravel races. I don't know where you live, but if you can get some wider tires on your road bike (32c) you should check out what your area has to offer. www.belgianwaffleride.bike/pages/belgian-waffle-ride-ca seemed like a road bikeable gravel/mixed surface race.

      @@thecman02 ahh...thanks for the insider race details. I figured the fat tire rider was probably working harder than the rest of the field. It makes sense that he would have a big engine in order to hang in there with a gravel race break. That course looked like the quintessential setting for a gravel event _ with the falling leaves masking dirt holes, the open vistas, and long sweeping curved gravel routes mixed in with roadway surfaces. It looked super fun as evident from your elation at the end. I literally started looking up gravel frames after watching it. I'm stompin on an Aeroad right now and am documenting my training rides out here in CA _ "Race Pace_Los Angeles" www.youtube.com/@M3Atelier-Initiative/videos cheggitout. Looking fwd to your vid content for Gravel 24' I'm currently wrestling with VirbEdit 🤬😭 The BWR will be something that I will try to take a swing at once I get a rig set-up. I hear the prices may come down. I saw a few BWR vids, and to be quite honest, the Michigan courses look waaay more fun. I'll post a vid of my experience out here and at some point should I make it back to Detroit, I'll pin on a number for a race. The last time I rode Mtn was in Ann Arbor on the Potowatamee trails. It was super fun.

      Fall Lowell tends to be the most contested race of the year. In the 38mi race we had two guys that could possibly win the MGRS Short overall with a win. Both guys had helpers, also we had some long race gravel series guys that tend to drop down as a tapper going into Iceman. Stacked field of hitters kept it together.
