Sound So Good You'll Cry: The Secret Weapon of HX Stomp In-Ear Mixing
I have a BB435 and it's great. Trying to get heavier (or flat) strings to tame the highs and reduce lower mids. I'd prefer hotter pickups, as well, but it's probably not worth it.
Thanks for watching, and the feedback. I have replaced the pickups on my BB734 with Dimarzio Relentless, and they have made a difference. Haven't done it to my 434 as I don't play it as much as the 734. I use Rotosound BS66 strings which have a heavy E and a lighter G. Give them a go and see what you think.
Are you confused on what you need to get an In Ear Monitoring System up and running?
Great video! But a note: At 4:51, I use that mixer, and just about everybody I’ve heard from that uses that mixer, says that the built-in Wi-Fi is garbage, and you have to buy a router anyway. The mixer itself is great, but the external router makes the difference between it being usable at all at gigs
Hi. Thanks for letting me know. I have not used it myself but found it was a reason people "liked" it while I was researching. The external wifi is a better option anyway as you are likely to be able to get something with a greater range. Ours came with the Apple Airport Express as part of the package and I haven't bothered to swap it out. WHat are you using?
Great video. nice work maan..
Thanks very much and thanks for watching.
My first bass was a Yamaha BB as well. A BB G5. They looked a bit different back then. JJ pickups and 24 frets, but similar body shape. It served me well for 15 years, great bass! But if you're going 5-string, Yamahas have very narrow necks at the nut. But still nice wide string spacing at the bridge. I agree with your recommendation, they are great instruments, especially for beginners, but also for pros!
@@VeitLehmann thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I’ve not used a 5 string but I think you are right about the neck being a little narrow for it. Having said that, people who have the BB735 rave about them.
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for and bonus points for being a bassist too haha!
Awesome!! Thanks for taking the time to watch. (And I'll take the bonus points 🙂)
Thanks for this. Thinking about a yamaha trbx174. Hopefully they are not made in China
TRBX are also great basses.
Wow, i was looking for this! I am working with Cubase, so... is template 06A already present (set up by Line6) and ready to go?
Absolutely. Default template. I haven't tried it but it should work without any changes.
@@twistieonbass Tried it tonight: flawless! Again, thanks for pointing out, i was about to buy the Nektar Pacer for this... saves me ± 200 euro 🤑
Most bassists end up playing P style basses so this great starting point.
I've tried a few different configurations, but always seem to come back to that P-Bass style.
I got a fender jazz,93.my yamaha is a cheaper version,but it's lighter,plays faster,and sounds mean.
@@chucke9492 Fantastic!! Thanks for watching
Yamaha Bass guitars are superb.
Hey!! Thanks for watching. I completely agree. Are you using one?
Love this bass, but is so heavy, so I prefer the Yamaha TRBX-605, Is plume.
@@dxurbina awesome. Another fantastic bass. I prefer the BB because of the pickup configuration, but the TRBX is on my wish list.
Looking for an amazing entry level bass that will last all the way through to professional work?
Colour coding your line 6 Helix or HX Stomp is a great way to "idiot-proof" your setup.
Great video, very useful, but as a clueless person it poses a few questions. You're talking about gigging and getting a signal to front of house. But if you're practicing at home then you can't use the DI without a PA so you might as well get a giggable amp? The reason I say giggable is because I'd imagine you'd get familiar with the sound you've practiced with and turn up to gig knowing the sound you want? I'd imagine practicing at low volumes and then going to a gig with a DI box you rarely use and you could find yourself totally lost? Another question would be about the cab sim. If you've a DI without cab SIM going to front of house is that going out to PA speakers without ever hitting a cab SIM? I'm more informed by your video but think I'm leaning to giggable amp.
Hi. Thanks very much for watching. You are right, for home use, a DI isn't much help unless it is part of an audio interface for recording, or, like I use, an amp sim (Line 6 HX Stomp, etc). If you are looking for an amp for practice and gigging, I would recommend looking for one that has an balanced (XLR) output that allows you to connect to front of house, or into a recording interface. Saves you carrying a DI with you. As an example, my Markbass amp has a balanced out. No need to mic the cabinet and I can set the tone from the amp, not just a clean signal from the bass.
Hi. I rethought my previous answer overnight. While I use a Line 6 HX Stomp for a consistent rehersal, practice, and gigging sound, as an alternative, you could get a DI with a preamp in it. A number of them include a cab sim option and many of them also have a headphone out. The Ampeg SGT DI is getting lots of really great reviews.
Thanks for the effort in sharing this information.
you are very welcome. thank you for taking the time to watch, I very much appreciate it.
Maybe I missed that in the video but what are your clean settings? Are you playing through hx stomp only?
Hi. Thanks for watching. I use both HX Stomp and LT. For this video all of the sounds came from the Helix LT but the same settings would have worked on the Stomp. The amp block I was using was the Ampeg SVT4-Pro and the 4x10 Ampeg Pro for the cabinet block. I then added the effects to this as I went along the video.
@@twistieonbass thanks!
Buy a $29 BDI21 or a $39 Wine Cellar and get on with your life
Thanks for watching and your feedback. The wine cellar's look cool.
Would this be okay as someone's first bass? Are there any downsides to it apart from it not having the usual headstock as a visual and tactile reference?
Hi, thanks for watching. These are full scale basses and are very versatile. With the exception that they don't "look normal", ie: they don't look like a P-Bass, they would be great as a first bass, especially for a shorter person (child, etc) as they "feel" smaller even though the neck is still full scale.
@@twistieonbass thanks for your reply! I'm learning on a borrowed bass, and my shoulders ache after a short while of playing standing up, so I have to sit. I guess having a ligher instrument would be very useful for me.
@@requemao These are definately VERY light weight. If you are looking at something more "traditional" looking, the Yamaha basses are pretty light. The 434 would be my pick of those. Older models are a bit heavy but the new ones are pretty good.
@@twistieonbass Thanks a lot, will look into those!
Dorothy Plains
THanks.
Very well explained, will be useful to many 🙂 Greetings from Finland! 🇫🇮
Thank you VERY much for watching and taking the time to comment. Greetings back from Oz!!
When I was young I used to carry my whole rig to the gigs and took the Di signal from the bass head. In my early 40's I used to go lighter but still carrying a bass amp. Then I decided to get a Sansamp to send the signal foh and then use whatever bass amp in the venue as stage monitor. There are some cheap options out there to get a good bass tone without diggin a hole in your bank account.
I'm with you. I moved away from a really heavy Eden with 2 4x10 cabinets and am now pretty well just using a HX Stomp. And my back loves me for it 🙂
Very informative and well put together video. I've been confused as to whether I need a DI for various situations and this has helped.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I'm glad it was of help.
Actually, DI stands for Direct Injection
Really? I didn't know that. Thanks for the feedback.
Behringer BDI21 = CHEAP. I opened for Immolation with that pedal. The soundman was super happy with less stage noise. I still use it.
Awesome! Good to know. Thanks for the feedback.
Great information! Thanks
Thanks for watching.
i think this is an important video for a lot of bassists who are starting to look into their pedalboard, great stuff!
Thanks very much for watching, and your feedback.
I have 3 options on my pedalboard to go out via di xD First is my usual xlr out on my 2notes opus with amp and cab sim. Second is the two xlr outs on my ebs microbass 3 preamp (pre and post preamp section). Usually i only use the first option, but on my last gig the mixing guy wanted a post preamp signal also to use his plugins on a later live-mix-video of the venue. why i do this? Because i just don't like having to carry heavy amps with me.
Thanks VERY much for your feedback. I am with you 100%. The 2notes Opus is an awesome approach. If using a pre-amp DI (SansAmp, Helix, etc) works for Geddy Lee, instead of a large amp system, then it can't be too bad.
@twistieonbass True :) And the bass preamps in the opus are good too. If someone is quite a purist and does want to go for a sound without pedals it's even greater. The only drawback of it is its overwhelming options. You can use it for years and still experiment with new sounds, cabs, amp combinations etc :)
@@michisauer And there starts the never ending chasing of tone 🙂
Great video, very helpful. I was thinking about getting a behringer ULTRA-DI20, because I need to split my signal and already have a bass preamp, do you know if it's a good DI?
Hi. I have not used one, but they are very inexpensive. I prefer the Radial gear as I have found them really reliable but have used other Behringer gear in the past. I have found that the lower priced gear can be a bit "crackly" or "hissy", so just watch out for that.
Awesome video Steve!!!
@@ryansnydercg thanks very much for watching. Glad you liked it.
DI pedals/boxes are really handy, but as a bass player, do you really need one?
Hello, 👋 many greetings from Guayaquil Ecuador South America, 🤗 I would like to know your opinion on the quality of the preamps of this mixer and if it could be compared with the Mackie Dl16S, which one do you think is better in sound quality, since there are like $500 difference, is it fair to pay that difference?... thank you very much for your support.
@@almar1 hey, thanks for watching! I’ve not used the Mackie but the mic preamps on the A&H are extremely clean. One of the main reasons we chose this over the Behringer was the quality of the pre’s. We have used it as the recording interface in the studio as well as for live work.
Hello again, thank you very much for the help, I would like to ask you another question. Can you expand the input and output capacity of this mixer with a digital snake?
@@almar1 Hi. Absolutely. A&H have 3 digital expanders that provide additional ins and outs to suit the QU series. The AR84 (8in / 4 out), AB168 (16in / 8 out) and the AR2412 (24in / 12out). The QU is limited to 32 channels though so the AR84 or AB168 would be your best bet. We were looking at using the AR84 as a remote interface for the drummer but didn't end up needing in the end as we went with Radial Catapult mini analog snake (a male and a female set) that uses CAT6 cables between them.
@@twistieonbass Thank you very much for clarifying all my concerns, many greetings and congratulations for your excellent channel.
@@almar1 You are very welcome. Thank you for watching.

great stuff for a guitar player like myself looking to know more about bass tone!!
Hi!! Thanks very much for watching and your feedback. Really glad this was of interest.
Do you put the compressor before the amp or after it?
Before
@@higgybaby74 that’s my preferred place for it too
if you want to direct monitor in mono from your Stomp and bring less gear, you can also do this as I explained in my video (and if you want to also use the send to amp you can use a Behringer P1, it mixes 2 signals and it's cheap) ua-cam.com/video/k-91OR0628w/v-deo.html
@@gianni.chiarello awesome! Thanks for the feedback and the link to your vid. Great insight
Great tone!! 🤘
Thanks man!!! Very much appreciated.
Great video! I tried to do this myself some time ago and realized the midi send from Command Center is also dependent on the snapshot. I’m a guitarist and usually use 2-3 snapshots per song so I’d have to program each one with the “Next Song” button. Too much programming for me and I gave up. Gonna try again and your vid is a big help! good luck
Awesome!!! Thanks for watching, and I'm glad it was helpful. let me know how it goes
Hello! - What are those silver pickups you are using in your Billy Sheehan Signature Bass? Did you have them custom colored? Also, what type of pickup are you using on your blue and yellow VH "bumble-bee" bass in the neck position? Thanks!
Hey!! Thanks for watching. The pickups are the Billy Sheehan signature DiMarzio Relentless pickups and I have a video coming soon on how I put them in. On the bumble-bee I used the DiMarzio WillPower pickups. This was a few years ago and were the ones that were on the Attitude basses. If I was to do it again, I would definately go with the Relentless as they are awesome!
@@twistieonbass THANKS!
Interesting! You'd be able to fit two or more together in the desk by using an xlr as a patch cable which might also help in the case of interference by running the xlr closer to your spot on stage for potentially better line of sight between transmitter and receiver. Seen this trick done with the U4 for iems. Would be interested to see if there is noticeable latency going wireless from the bass in to the helix and then wireless to the desk?
Hey!! thanks for watching. Yes, we have a couple running into the desk to cover mic's and sometimes my Helix. The only issue is that the spacing for XLR inputs on most desks is too narrow to fit two of these together. The way around that, is as you suggest, to use a short XLR cable. My Line 6 wireless has around 5ms latency (approximately what you hear when standing away from your amp), and these have similar. So... potentially up to 10ms latency end to end, but I haven't noticed it while playing.
@@twistieonbass thanks, might give it a try, one less cable to plug in!
@@martincarlin1987 Absolutely!!
An interesting watch. Did you note that on the BB3000, the scalloping job is unfinished? Billy said he started to do it, but felt bad about carving the bass up!
Thanks for watching. Yes. I had the chance to actually hold that guitar and noticed that. Up until recently I had left my scalloping untreated, but moisture was getting into the fretboard so I put some paint on it.

Hey Steve, great content and I'm not even into bass! If I can throw my 2cents in I would recommend a shorter intro. Just the "Twistie on Bass" splash is enough. The longer part I'd place at the end of your video. As fas as Audio it's OK but next step would be a Rodes Wireless mic GO with a lapel mic. Will eliminate the background distractions like squeaky chairs! Anyway love your work , keep doing it , it's good stuff
Thanks for the advice. And thanks for the continued support.
Towards the end you suggest that other units may sound better than helix. Based on sound alone what do you think is best?
@@Marshallstclair I really like the Helix platform. To my ears, I get the sound I want to hear.
@@twistieonbass thanks!
Nice job, but KISS songs bass parts have to be played with a pick!!
I know!!! Sorry... I'm so used to playing finger style I didn't even think about using a pick
@@twistieonbassthink outside of the pick!!!
Paul Stanley played bass on this song. Not Gene.
Wow!!! I didn' know that!!! Thanks so much for the info... and thanks very much for watching
Wasn't it Paul on the demo but Gene on the actual album?
@@jameshughes6049 according to Wikipedia, Paul played the albums version. Well, I never… 😂😂✌️
I was that same young boy, in my flaming youth, influenced by Gene to play bass. And are still playing today. 🤘🏼 Great vid by the way; thanks.
Thanks very much for watching!!! Definately one of my favourite KISS songs and it really was a blast to play. The AXE bass is a bit unbalanced, so hats off to Gene Simmons for being able to use that everynight.
