Voice lost in the now is abstract. Try, "Voices on the river," or "The voice of the songbird," or "A little girl's voice." Each evoke a clear image and are attached to something concrete, whereas "the now" is vague and abstract. A voice drowned in silence means nothing, whereas, "Along the creek bed/The voice of the croaking frog/drowned by the darkness." or "Lovely yellow finch/What song do you sing for us/before departing?" In other words, haiku shows us an image and a moment. It does not tell us abstract thoughts. Show us the moment and we will not need "in the now." Show us evanescence and we will not need to think about what the word means. "Old pond" is an image. "A frog leaps" is a moment, now. "The sound of water" is both a splash, and the silence and evanescence that is left behind. Haiku is pointing a finger and painting a picture, not abstracting in mind.
