Breakdown of the race with my thoughts on why steering does not make that much difference and same with bike choice.
This course is a good one to race. Plenty of bumps but no real climb that blows the race apart.

Ladder Racing has brought back the team aspect to Zwift for me. Our two DIRT teams challenged each other for a "friendly" Ladder Race around Champs-Élysées (man I hate this course) and due to different last minute conflicts or tech issues only four AceZ made it out of the start pen. A mistake, I am not Italian or elite. Most likely it was accidentally attached to an event or when they manually sent the kits out I was included. I have a couple kits from unknown origin
You might want to explain Ant Bev
Ant Bev is our favorite! Special place in our hearts.
I love your comments along the race
Thank you very much. I am glad you are enjoying it! I learn a lot from rewatching the races and seeing some details I missed in the race too.
Pretty stoked they are bringing in Cat 5 and 6 🔥🔥🔥
@ZwiftDude absolutely! The changes to the courses are pretty good as well. The new categories opens a lot of doors for people to get into verified racing with the potential to win some money.
Casey Schumm is such a Zwift OG! Team eXperimental back in the day, IIRC. I have a Team X water bottle amongst my collection
@DarenC Casey is a legend! Yes Team X. Not everyone can say they beat Lionel Sanders in a live event!
Supertuck still works just fine. You just cant get it when drafting.
@roadcyclist1 right on! This changed a while ago but I still have seen people not knowing that.
Awesome work! It’s so inspiring to see you back after such a big challenge. I hope I can follow your example. I’m currently recovering from ACL surgery and focusing mainly on mobility work. I’ve only stood up a couple of times and haven’t attempted a sprint yet… I want to build more strength first, and honestly, I’m a bit nervous. But I’ll get there when the time is right! 🚴♀️
Thank you! ACL surgery...ouch! I hope the recovery goes as well as mine did. My ACL was not intact before the knee replacement, I understand the instability and issues you were experiencing. It was several months before I stood and sprinted. I did 10 seconds at a time at higher wattages to feel comfortable. My doctor told me there was nothing I could do to hurt my knee replacement. The biggest hurdle was my mind trusting it after years of issues and not trusting my injured knee. The physical therapy was huge for my success. I put a lot of work into it and pushed the boundaries. My physical therapist was happy to push me along the way. I just had to be careful because there is a very thin line of progress and doing too much. I went over the that line a few times haha! Good luck. You will back stronger than before!
I dont get why you need to "slingshot" when you both had steering. Why not just steer away from the draft and supertuck? It was 2v2 on that descent wasn't it?
@titaniumben9923 we were using the slingshot to increase speed. We had all four of our team together. If it was 2v2 Casey and I could have done that for sure. In this case though we were utilizing it to gain ground on the descent.
@@brianwhite9 okay that makes more sense, jerseys really is confusing.
Love Zwift, but man the avatars and their movements look so much better on MyWoosh
Zwift has positives to the game and avatars for sure, but the detail is next level on MyWhoosh. I swore the standing motion was modeled after the Yates twins but it was actually the director Matt Smithson. When you are in a group with everyone standing it looks pretty funny...kind of like salmon swimming up streak!
I’m pretty sure I’ve super tucked in the draft recently. All it takes is a high watt output and then let off completely.
@SethGroover interesting. In my experience I hadn't noticed that happening. I wonder if it is a visual bug?
Don’t those headphones get super sweaty and make your brain melt!?! 😂
haha, I bought a set of cheap ones from the dollar store knowing they would not last long. Yet, surprisingly they have lasted about four years now. I tried ear buds and even Shokz but I just didn't like them as much as the over ear headphones.
I wear headphones (Beats Studio pros) on Zwift with Wicked Cushion sweat pads. I think it’s the best. Very immersive and I don’t feel like my head gets hot.
My wife got me a set of Beats for Christmas. I am a bit nervous about using them. Have you have any issues with them?
@@brianwhite9 I like mine a ton. Noise cancellation is great. I did switch out the ear pads tho. I found the stock ones too shallow. Gave me a headache after an hour or so.
I will check out the Wicked Cushions. Thank you! Noise reduction/cancelation is the main reason I like the overear style headphones
Great vid though very informative and fun 😊
@nilebattey thank you. The team tactic we used on the Grade and doing down Epic can help people learn some of the tricks to racing.
Is this an old video, it been like that for ages and ages 😅😅😅
@nilebattey I felt that same way but in my ZRL race guys were saying "you get super tuck here" "why am I not super tucking" Then I have seen several posts on Facebook about the super tuck not working.
Ah that makes sense, a load of ppl only jump back on zwift for the ZRL season so they might not have been aware 👍
I still have no idea what a ladder race is
Ladder Racing is a 5 vs 5 competition between two teams. You gain points for the finishing position 1st = 10 points, 2nd = 9, 3rd = 8 down to 10 = 1 point. I love this style of racing because you create a plan for the course and team you are facing, then try to execute your plan during the race. It brings back the "team" feel to racing on Zwift. There is a ranking system for the teams which is where you can be challenged or challenge another team within five positions of your rank. If you are on a Zwift team already you may have a group of riders already competing in the Ladder Race Club, ladder.cycleracing.club/ or zwiftinsider.com/zwift-club-ladder/ Sorry for the poor explanation in the video.
most participants are still bots.
I know there are bot riders in free rides. Those don't bother me. Most of the events I have done have had all humans. One way to find all human events are the premium or community driven events like the OTR races
Looks good fun. It will be great if they get the numbers for each category in the future.
The mass start races are very challenging. You never know what ability riders will be there. I enjoy mass start because they push me to ride with stronger riders, however getting left behind after a few kilometers is no fun either. This type of racing should have at least a couple other pens to create a better overall experience.
Looks good. MyWhoosh continue to innovate.
@ZwiftDude MyWhoosh has some really good features and visuals for sure. They are having a major update very soon with a new world. This year alone MyWhoosh has added two worlds with over 60 kilometers of actual road, not looped routes similar to another platform.
That was an awesome race! Great job on the finish!
Thanks Miguel! It was such a mental fight at that moment but I am so glad that I fought myself and did not chose the easy way to finish the race

@BrentSensenig thank you, you as well! I watched it probably 15 times editing this. That was one of the craziest bridges I have seen in a race.

I like the way you presented this. I aim to do the same with mine. How did you get the message texts in the middle of your screen?
@thecyclinggreek274 Thank you very much! I like the breakdown of showing what I am thinking/seeing in a race. I record the video with OBS then upload the video to DaVinvi Resolve. From there I can add the music, voice over and any other images or videos I want to. It took me about 6 hours for the first video, slowly I am getting quicker. It still takes about an hour to make a video.

Thank you Mark. It has been phenomenal how I have progressed through this recovery. Having zero pain in day to day life is something I cannot accurately put into words.
Calculating shorter rides to an FTP, that's just an estimation. Looks like on the grade more or less Zwift takes 85% of your average power as your FTP (365 watt in 13 minutes). If you would want to 'land' on 340 FTP, you should have done ~400 watts. Estimation just being an estimation, it can be off based on personnal 'traits'. Ie. could well be that you are better at maintaining your actual FTP wattage in an hour ride, then holding a significant higher wattage in a 10-20 minute ride based on which your FTP is calculated (too low).
I am definitely built for more of the steady effort TT/FTP efforts. I was just looking at how similar the power numbers. My thought was it would be at least close in the FTP "Grade" not 30 watts apart. If it was 10 watts, fine. In the next week or so I will try to fit in an actual full gas effort on the Grade. 400 watts for 11 minutes or so is probably not going to happen, maybe 370. It is all estimation, you are not wrong at all right there. Just odd how the estimation between platforms are so different.
Nice work! 💪
Thank you very much! Very excited to keep progressing and see how far I can go
I think you started sprinting too late. In my experience you should start sprinting immediately after seeing orange numbers. You started your sprint like 1-2 seconds later than the others and at that point you cant catch up. Also i dont think the watts 100-0 m from finish matter as much since it goes to waste. what do you think?
@vortexmaster6481 you are probably correct. That was my first time going to a sprint at that banner. Normally about 300 meters i am full sprint but here it was closer to 250 meters. Good call!
Encouraging - thanks for sharing. I had total knee replacement 7 weeks ago (and another surgery 2 weeks ago to clear out the resulting infection). Was doing some light spinning at 50 watts before surgery 2 and felt good- better than before the TKR. Nice that you are seeing even better power than before too. Did you make any riding or training changes after KR? Lower trainer difficulty, or higher RPMs? Can you generally climb as well/better than before?
@DavidHahn1 oh no! I hope the infection is taken care of. A staph infection was what caused my initial issues. Before surgery my FTP peaked at about 330-335 and 5-8 minute power was around 400. Now I am sitting in the mid 340s and 5 minute in the 420s. I was shocked when I started hitting those numbers. The improvement in pain is hard to even put into words. As far as riding goes, I started increases intensity from about 100-150 watts up to 200 watts for 30 minutes around 6 to 8 weeks. Once I was able to ride for 45 minutes at 200 watts I started increasing volume and intensity. I did not have to change anything about training or cadence. I actually ride at lower cadence now. That was not intentional just natural adjustment. I truly hope you can experience similar results as I have. Being able to stand for more than five minutes without pain is an amazing feeling.
@@brianwhite9 Yeah staph - same - they are working on it and prob be fine. I hear you about the pain - I ignored it for a while, but after a couple years I went from 100K rallies at 20+mph avg to having to sag out of the most beginner, baby ride my local shop has. That was my wakeup call to get it done. Good to know about training and cadence and very encouraging about your return in a year. Thanks.
@DavidHahn1 mine wasn't caught immediately, sounds like yours was caught immediately. I delayed even looking into it for probably five years. Once you get the clearance to ride again the power will cone back quickly!
@@brianwhite9 damn - didn't find the infection for 5+ years ? My knee turned red and painful on a Sunday and I was in the surgeon's office Monday morning. And on intravenous antibiotics a couple hours later, and in surgery that afternoon. Even then she said it was almost septic. Got clearance today to (re)start easy riding - like 30,40 watts! So slow that sometimes my Zwift avatar will get off the bike and stand next to it ... smarmy bastard..
@DavidHahn1 oh no, sorry. My infection went about 14-16 days before we realized what was happening. I delayed the knee replacement about five years. Sorry 🤣 Yay! I didn't even open Zwift for a few weeks because I couldn't take the thought of barely moving.
You lost me as soon as I saw how low your trainer setting was.
@@ahnilatedahnilated7703 that was a deal breaker? The power required is the same regardless of trainer difficulty. Wahoo also released a statement suggesting to ride below 100%.
Regarding the 60+ guy doing 572w for 20': Don't know him, but there have been many bugs lately on Zwiftpower that caused a miscalculation of power efforts. I've seen many legit racers having insanely huge numbers. Afaik it happens when you do several races within a short timeframe and it happened to a lot when ToW was live.
@leg_snapper that might explain the 1300 watt 5 minute data but the historical data shows extremely high power for several events beyond Tour of Watopia. Errors do happen with trainers, which could explain a one off high reading. It just seems Zwift has a slew of would tour level 50 and 60 year olds. If it is legit, great. On other platforms I have not seen any of the types of riders.
nice race
Thank you very much!
you already spent a lot of energy before the grade. It calculates FTP from the botom of the climb to the top, and everything you do before that is not taken into the calculation.
The overall number on the Grade was close enough to the MyWhoosh effort that I felt it would produce a similiar number. I know I had done work prior, but being 9 watts lower over 12 minutes then being 30 watts less is what caused me to really question this calculation. I did the math, in order for Zwift to give me a 340 "grade" I would need to do about 390 watts. Is Zwift underestimating the "grades" on purpose to make workouts easier? After the holiday here I will have to do some more testing
maybe mywoosh is wrong?
I had thought that might be possible. A few weeks later I did Ventoux at 338, so MyWhoosh seemed to get that pretty close. intervals.icu now matches what MyWhoosh has as well. I had to manually change the Zwift FTP from 325 up to 340.
First, tour of watopia....ALWAYS a race ;-) With regard your friend - surely when he rides outside he doesn't ride at the front all the time too?? I don't see why it's any different on zwift
Always a race...until that red fence comes into play!!! I asked him about that. His thought process was to get a hard workout in while riding. The mentality of outside vs inside changes which causes some of these issues. His expectation was to go hard and be able to place well, but when the other riders rode away from him he was shocked. From other conversations I have had with some new indoor cyclists is that they have never raced outside. So they do not understand how to race.
I think the problem is just that you went pretty hard before the grade and didnt realy do a 12 min effort with fresh legs?
@JonicSc2Strategy that is a thought. The numbers were close, I don't know if Zwift would be able to account for an effort being fresh or not. I don't know how much more I can do currently. I do know that getting the 30 watt difference is not in my ability. The Grade seemingly used 88% of 358 to give me 313. To get 340 from the Grade I would have to do 390 for the whole Grade.
Also, zwift made it so the grade underestimates your ftp so that people can do workouts and feel good doing them so they come back and do more and keep paying their subscription fee. If they found the workouts too hard then they would quit zwift and not pay
@hollieburgin ...that is absolutely believable...Aunt Bev has to feel good, nevermind the progress. Zwift does seem to be going after the larger mass audience lately. Completely on par for Zwift's brand to make it "easy"
Ouch !!! Should have used an ebike
That would have been a far better option!!!
My guess is that with MyWhoosh PPT, it takes the entire ride with all your free rides into account for your FTP. I believe The Grade only takes your watts/time going up the hill. Since it was about 12 minutes, I assume it took about 92% of your average watts (92% is what you use for 12 minute test) going up and selected that for your "grade." When you went up The Grade, it does not look like you were close to an all out maximum effort going up that climb. I have done only one "all out" effort up the grade and I believe it gave me an FTP about 20 watts under what my FTP was set at. But I also did not pace it very well. I would suggest giving it another try at maximal effort and I think I might try the same now that I know how long it would take for me to get up and see how similar it is then.
I am not sure if the MyWhoosh test combined the 3 and 12 minute effort to spit out a number or not. If it does, then it is very possible that is why MyWhoosh has my FTP set at 340. That is what piqued my interest. I figured having similar numbers would result in similar "grade." I was not full gas on this effort but it was a pretty healthy effort. I did set a Strava PR on this effort, so it was my fastest effort up the Grade. 92% would be 330, which is what intervals.icu had stated my FTP was after this MyWhoosh Power Passport test.
👍! !! 💜💜💜
nice mic
@@BrianKellison I know a guy that really helped with my audio setup
Great way to visualize basic racing tactics, and a bit impressed with the lead in, hahaha.
@BartSchrijvers thank you. I hope to share some of the tactics I have learned through the years. My friend has a race score in the mid 400s, these Tour of Watopia events are great for riding with someone and helping them learn in a larger/stronger group. Ha, that lead in was pretty spicy!
Love your shirt!
Thank you! I like wearing Phil Gaimon's Cookie Fondo kit in game when I have the Cookie Monster jersey on too!
How do you get to an FTP of 340? I feel stuck at 280. Is structured training the best way? How many workouts/hours per week do I need?
A lot goes into that question. I raced a lot outside from 2013-2015, then was sideswiped by a car and quit cycling as much. At the end of 2016 I started on Zwift but wasn't serious about riding. I just rode for fun. Some point in 2019 I decided to get serious again. My 20 minute power was around 275 at time. I bought a couple pre built plans, one from FasCat coaching and one from Peaks Coaching Group. They have difference philosophies toward training (sweet spot vs polarized) which gave me a good base of training to do. The biggest recommendation I have give you is to be consistent. If you have 5 hours a week, make those five hours count. Ride in Z2 for a good chunk of that time, with one ride focused on VO2 and another ride on sweet spot/threshold. I currently ride about 7-9 hours a week, but the rides are focused. My overall goal is to train and do well for MyWhoosh Sunday Race Club. If you hop in the Discord server we can get much more in depth, plus there are several very experienced and smart individuals in there that can answer a multitude of questions.
19th out of 500+ is not too shabby.
Extremely true statement! Doing all the work before the forward Hilly KOM took it out of me. With a bit more conservative riding I might have been there at the finish.
Also .. York shu… not York shy er 😂
@@hollieburgin haha! It is gonna be a wave sweeping your side of the mountain!!!
Oh I’ve heard of Hollie !
While I think race score may be the way forward, I may be an outlier, in Cat D I would finish around the middle of the pack. I now have a minimum race score of 207, and I finish last in almost every race (there was one race I was second last or so). The race score minimum by power mixed with weighing in 100+kg may be the issue for myself. It's not like I can even keep up with the middle of the pack on flats. When I say last, I don't mean close, it's usually several minutes after the next finisher.
@Phizev I see that part of it. You were mid pack and now there are totally out of sight There has to be a fun side to make it enjoyable. I got crushed today and it does sting seeing people just disappear from you. I am not sure when, maybe already, but there are improvements coming.
It makes no difference to me, I am a B rider at the lowest end, and in Racing Score I am again at the lowest end of that category, so I am still racing against stronger riders. And since im sitting perfectly in the middle with my weight between the climbers and the heavy riders its hard to tell what route suits me.
That is a tough spot. I know on October 29th they made some changes to Race Score, which hopefully leads to improvements for the overall seeding. Ultimately, I think we need to utilize more pens once more people are on Zwift. The only downside is during the low traffic months on Zwift we are in the same boat.
