Building a HO Scale Container Train For CHEAP!
Looking at the prices of new container trains, I knew I was going to go bankrupt if I bought more than 5. So I decided to 3D print my own! These 3D printed model train cars were an excellent way to save some money, and learn some new things about 3D printing. This video was mainly meant to be a proof of concept, proving you could print HO Scale model trains and cars using your basic 3D printer.

If you want to print these in HO scale, remember you need to scale the files down to HO scale since they are designed in S Scale. To scale parts to HO scale, input 73.56% in your slicer for all axes. I scaled the body of the car itself to 75% to give a little more room since the parts didn't fit together all that well and needed some trimming. That helps a bit.

Cab Ride at the Golden Spike Model RR Club! (Warm Springs building)

This video was taken at the Golden Spike Model Railroad Club HO scale model train layout at the Warm Springs building. Due to earthquake damage in March of 2020, Salt Lake City condemned the building and the club found a new home. This is one of the only videos I'm aware of showing the incredible scale and detail of this club layout. Maybe someday the Golden Spike Model Railroad Club will find ...

@@trainsncookingwDrake she puts up with a lot of my BS lol
You can weight the containers by pausing the print before the top layer lines and add sand into the model. Just be careful to not smear sand over the outer layers...
I haven't begun printing rolling stock, but having printed on several printers for the last 3 years I have a few pieces of advice : 1) a good quality filament for aesthetic parts is a filament which diameter is really regular elseway the printed walls are sloppy because sometimes there is too much material, other times too little. As you would have guessed, good diameter regular filament is more expensive. For mate color parts : Polytera Pla by polymaker. For other parts : Prusament PLA by Prusa, it is a breese to print. 2) it's way easier to paint over light colors than darker ones. Just print with a good white if you are going to paint it afterwards 3) if you aren't going to paint it, mate-color filaments help hiding defects 4) sometimes from tge same brand two colors win't behave the same 5) so for my choices of filament, for mate parts ? Polytera PLA (the red one doesn't print as well as the others and the color is to pinkish, but the others are great) For usual ones ? Prusament. It's more expensive at around 27-30$ per spool, but it's a dream to print, reliable, precise, printing defects are minimal
You've probably noticed this already, but part of the expense with the store bought inter modal cars is the fact that they are diecast. This allows for the whole car to be weight. If you want to save money on train car weights, you can use steel bars. They will take up more volume than the lead weights, but they're a lot cheaper.
Thanks for sharing this wow they look really great 👍🇦🇺
Hmm. I've been extremely curious about this, I bought an absolutely giant lot of wheel sets, literally hundreds of them off ebay and I've been thinking about using them to create a fleet of 3d printed cars. Glad to see some success out of it! Although seeing the troubles with assembly of the re-scaled cars I think I'll try 3d modeling my own copy of a Con-Cor articulated well car unit I've got which honestly aren't that much higher detail than these printed cars. Plus with the articulated units I can get the cost even lower because they need fewer couplers and fewer wheels for a longer train.
Hey I was looking for your email and couldn't find it. I'd appreciate it if I could have to drop you a line!
jtengineeringyt@gmail.com
I’d love to have a set of those cars! They look great to me.
if this goes anywhere maybe the big corps will cut there stupid high prices. but i have more than i can use right now. and did see a way to print on card stock. looks good. and anybody can do them. but the only problem with printing is you need to be a computer neerd. and have $10’s of thousands of USD in a good printer and then the flubs learning how to program the computer right
Downloading and printing models do not take a lot of your time (unless you sit and look at the printer working of course). You will find a lot online. The printer is around a couple of hundred USD for a model where you do indeed need to tinker with it. Spend a bit more and the tinkering pretty much goes away. 10's of thousands is professional territory. To be honest, this looks like a comment describing 3D printing a decade ago
Next would be 3D printed tank cars like the ones with two value covers.
The best part is "don't take it too seriously" I think that is key. You should enjoy the hobby and don't let someone else try to make you feel like you have to comply with some rules of accuracy. If you want a faithful reproduction of a location or a track with turns, bridges and Godzilla that is fine too.
@@vanderzee68 This right here. If rivet counting is what brings you joy, that's amazing. If you just want to mess around and have fun, that's great too. At the end of the day all that matters is that you're enjoying it.
I developed a design in HO for well cars and the end is adapatable for either coupling /coupling or a 3 gang configuration and a 5 gang configuration. I ended up making 4-5gang units and a few spare singles and all the containers to populate them. If ou're interested in the design, let me know.

You forgot to include the cost of the 3D printer, and the computer to run it.
not to forget your time learning how to program, and run it right.
This argument is ridiculous. Who doesn't have a computer in 2024? This is like saying the cost of a stove should be a factor into budgeting home cooking vs ordering take out.
@larryjanson4011 3D printing doesn't take programming knowledge. The time it takes to run it right is also silly because it's a tool like anything else. Do you not use a saw because it'll take time to know how to use it well?
What kind of 3D Printing do you own. I’m new to this hobby.
It seams to be an Ender. Personally I would recommend any of the Bambulab printers. They are a little bit more expensive but are reliable und ready to use out of the box. If you exclusive focus is scale modeling, than I would recommend a resin printer but make sure to wear PPE and know about the safety protocols.
Email me are they free
Why don't you use them for a container yard ?
bunch of sanding, primer, and spray paint will solve the color issues.
@@P3RV-3 For sure. I'm just lazy lol.
idea just use the containers for dockyards and if you were to add some ships to a HO layout for a dockyard you can use those containers and make it interesting
Download design spark 3d modeling software. There are a lot of tutorials on UA-cam. It's super easy to learn and will save you a lot of money.
Cool, this cars are expensive if you buy them
Agreed! Intermodal in HO is outrageously expensive! Just discovered your channel. You do some very impressive work! If you eventually are looking to make these blend in more, I think all you'll need to do is decals and a bit of weathering. That might do the trick. Also, if you're looking to get rid of some containers, I might be interested. If there's an email I can reach you at, we can work something out and I'll make you an offer. (Unfortunately I can't find your email on your channel page)
There is definitely potential with these cars. I agree if you had more of them, and it they all had decals they wouldn't look as out of place. Yeah! I've got tons of standard containers that are taking up room in the closet. Shoot me a email at jtengineeringYT@gmail.com.
With some higher quality filament it could be solid like you said. The containers look great would never be able to tell they are 3d printed and not OEM stuff
You could probably sell some on eBay for a discounted price if you wanted to. But im happy just making my own when I need to
Consider 3D-printing your own trucks. ;)
Interesting. I'm not sure how well they would work. Having a bunch of weight down low I think is important for keeping the track, but that's definitely an interesting thought. Maybe I'll give it a shot!
4:37 UP's turbines are GTEL (Gas Turbine Electric Locomotive), not 'GETL'.
Love the content and the editing! your channel is gonna explode quick I see it. One of the biggest challenges with Model railroading is how expensive stuff is.
Thank you! Yes model RR is definitely expensive. 3D printing stuff has been a great way for me to save money.
I think painting the cars with an airbrush instead of printing them in color would result in a much better color match
Most definitely an airbrush would work best. I still have yet to buy one of those, but if I do maybe I'll try designing my own well car in HO scale and see how good I can get them.
@@J.T.EngineeringI like I love shipping I like I love I know I don't hate I like also different types of shipping containers
They look pretty good, I think if you used some sort of spray can to dull the paint or weather them lightly the tone of the color would fit much better with regular rolling atock
yes just weather and add gang marks to them.
The grey ones look like the twin towers
Excellent video, I need to get more containers printed, going to subscribe your channel
Thank you! Send me an email at jtengineeringYT@gmail.com and I'll send you a few of the standard containers I have.
Is this good with a resin printer aswell?
I don't have a resin printer, so I couldn't tell you. I don't know how easy resin printer plastics are to trim and fit together, but it would be safe to assume the finished product would be much better than FDM printed since there wouldn't be any layer lines.
they definitely look different from the regular cars, but when it comes to saving money, they look great (especially the containers). if you're happy with them, that's all that really matters. great video!
Thanks! It was fun to see if I could achieve reasonable results with a common printer. I'll probably try something similar in the future and actually give it the respect it deserves 😂
Non-modeller here (but addicted 3D print nerd). I dunno how big your layout is, or whether it's even landscaped. But if it is, couldn't you just use your surplus containers to create a static container storage yard scene/area on your layout?
They look amazing and for $12 is a bargain 🔥
Cool! I have 4 printers. I must try it🤙🏼
You definitely should! There are some super cool planes out there available for printing. I'm working on a 1.7m spitfire for a future video!
Thanks
Great Job , can I ask what printer you use ? and are those Kadee # 5's you using?
Thanks! Both of my printers are Ender 3 S1+ printers. As far as the couplers go, I'm fairly certain they are either #5s or 158s. Either would work.
How does this guy not have more subs he’s a great youtuber
Thanks! I just started uploading, so its going to take some time for my channel to grow. I've got lots more coming so stay tuned!
I always wanted to build one of these! This is great.
You should! I put the plans I drew up to build mine for free in the description of the video if you like the car or just want a reference.
Nice job on the flat car and the video! What kind of milling machine are you using?
Thanks! I think it turned out pretty good. My mill is a Precision Mathews PM30-MV. Though I didn't do a ton of milling on this project since I bought the trucks, I do have plans and parts to start building a steam engine so Ill definitely be using it a lot for that.
I wouldn’t call 3D printing optimal for an RC plane, but in your hands, it works fine!
With this being my first 3D printed plane, I was definitely surprised how light it actually was.
you should build the shark aero!!!
Hmm maybe I'll do a video on that! Thanks for the suggestion!
Well done. Fun and creative vid.
Thank you!!
Great videos. Goid mix of diy, production value, and hilarity. Is this your first UA-cam channel?
@@yourca Thank you! I really appreciate that. It was a bit of a process to learn how to walk the line between conveying all the information needed and keeping it entertaining. I may try starting that one back up on the side later if this one starts to do well. Fingers crossed 🤞
