shuttle bus conversion | Prepping Walls & Covering Windows | Ep. 4
Preparing the bus walls means stripping em down to build em back up. How do you deal with the plywood that runs behind the window frame in a shuttle bus? I’ll show you my fix here.
SOUND DEADENER
First we install the sound deadener to reduce vibration and noise inside the bus.
www.amazon.com/Noico-deadening-Automotive-Insulation-dampening/dp/B00URUIKAK/ref=asc_df_B00URUIKAK/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198084439869&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9100062733576105356&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032130&hvtargid=pla-379817158544&psc=1#ace-g1145045626
FURRING THE WALLS
Then we frame out the walls with furring strips. I ripped 2x4s in half and installed them on the flat, adding 1 1/2” to my wall thickness. Ripping the boards in half means half the material cost, half the weight, half the trees cut down, and more room for insulation. We install furring strips for several reasons:
-wood is an easy material to nail into. Imagine trying to fasten your finish wall material straight to the steel. Sounds tricky!
-they increase the wall depth to give you more space for insulation
-they act as a thermal break from the steel structure. When you’re outside on a hot day, and you sit on a metal slide, it’s HOT! If you sit on a wooden bench, it’s not so hot. Same thing applies to your bus. The steel structure gets hot sitting in the sun all day, and we don’t want that heat to transfer to the inside, so the furring strips (and insulation) act as a thermal break from letting that heat come in via the steel. (The same is true in the winter, except we’re preventing the heat from escaping out rather than coming in!)
INSULATION
Insulation is the final step in prepping the walls for the finish material. In an effort to minimize chemicals in the bus, and in the earth in general, I opted for sheep’s wool insulation. It was pricey, ~$750, but worth it for me! Other chemical free options are denim insulation and hemp insulation.
shop.havelockwool.com/#
For the windows that I wanted to eliminate, I simply covered them up rather than removing them. A much more affordable option. Put a decal on the inside of the window (for fun), spray paint the inside of the window, then just treat it and finish it like the rest of your walls.
Wishing you the best on your bus journey!
With love,
Suzy

    • @suzycashbuilds4297
      @suzycashbuilds4297 2 роки тому

      Yes I did… I unbolted it from the frame and cut the lines going to it. But there are toxic gasses like freon and refrigerant that run to the AC so it is best to have a professional do this part! I also had a mechanic remove the big condenser unit that was under the bus behind the driver door. This unit was broken, so neither the front AC not the rear AC worked, so I just had it taken out, and I still need to get my front AC fixed to get up and working again. If your driving AC and the rear AC are connected I would definitely take it to a mechanic to have them figure it out!!

    Okay, I've done this. I would like to convert the wiring to a 120 volt outlet plug. Do you or anyone know how to do that?

    • @suzycashbuilds4297
      @suzycashbuilds4297 2 роки тому

      This wiring is connected to the vehicle battery, so I would be hesitant to wire anything to it that you would use while the vehicle is off, bc then you would drain your battery and not be able to start the vehicle :/ But if you do want a 120 volt outlet in your build, you’ll need an inverter which can convert 12v to 120v. I’m posting a link below to an example; with something like this you could cut off the cigarette lighter part and wire it directly to the old wheelchair lift wiring. But this is only a 140w inverter, so you’d be able to plug in a computer charger, etc, but nothing too powerful. If you want a more robust system, or if you’d like to use the outlet while the vehicle is off, then I would recommend building an electrical system completely separate from the vehicle which would include battery, some sort of power source (i.e. solar panel) and an inverter. I used Far Out Ride to help me with my whole electrical system. Good luck with your build! www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DXAEPI140-Power-Inverter-Converter/dp/B06Y549WB9/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=120v+car+adapter&qid=1642080891&sr=8-3

    I just bought a shuttle bus that I am converting as well. I used gloss black spray on the inside of the windows and it look fantastic..... just looks tinted. You could potentially put the sticker on first, and sound deadening after painting. Don't be afraid to scrape off what you did and start over. We learn as we go! Will be following your journey..... and you have already given me a great idea which is the automotive undercoating spray. My bus is VERY similar to yours. 2006 on a Ford E-450 chassis. Also bought from a transit company. (They even gave me the maintenance records). I will also be recording. I am hoping I don't have the leak issues in my roof that you did. Killz is great over wet wood once it dries. I am going to be using all repurposed cabinetry and many other materials. New furring strips, plywood, and flooring though. Having a challenging time finding 112 SF of second hand decent flooring that will match my light maple cabinets!

    So I put my wheelchair lift out on the ground removed the plate covering all the wires that went across the bottom from one side of the lift to the other after disconnecting the power with those two wires that go into the power box, we cut all the wires in the middle and one of them was hydraulic fluid and it went spraying everywhere oh my goodness. @@suzycashbuilds4297 my bus already has the framework done for a stage I will perform music on. Plus my ceiling has decent insolation so I decided to just leave it alone, but really I know your right..... I just don't think it makes sense in my situation

    Hi Suzy, A couple of things. 1) It is a good thing that you discovered the water leak now, you can deal with it before you have things like insulation, wiring etc in the way. 2) Good luck with your future conversion build out.

    Hey Suzy! This and you are awesome! I just bought a shuttle bus also! We are trying to get the seats out. The undercarriage is sprayed with insulation cause it was used in Park city. I spoke to the mechanic and the manufacturer said it should be pretty sound. But I have my doubts around the wheelchair door. So much work but it’s all so very exciting! Thanks for sharing, you are a huge inspiration! For roof leaks they said caulk, caulk, caulk! Was thinking rhino lining the whole bus! Wish I lived closer to ya! Lol

      Yeah the seats were a hassle, I hope you can manage with all the spray insulation 😬 there is a solution for everything! Just sometimes takes some thinking and some $$ Have fun!!
