John's Tiny Woodshop
Приєднався 13 кві 2008
Virginia's #1 small coaster production shop*
What started out as a little bit of DIYing in a tiny 7' x 12' shed that also housed a lawnmower and some bikes, blossomed into a lot of DIYing in larger space. Still goofy though. Don't worry. The fame hasn't gone to me head.

I went to Iceland
9 days in Iceland in early September.
I accidently shot half of the video in 120 fps so that was a bit of mess to edit.
We will return to normal woodworking videos soon!

I am slightly unhinged and flying free in this episode in which I slip so comfortably back into the easy rhythm of making coasters.

This Week in the Shop. I put some finishing touches on the hope chest, I put together an upgrade for the laser engraver, and also play around with a Freud Dado set.
Look out! We got a LASER!

This Week in the Shop... I work on trying to dial in the planer infeed and outfeed, pop in a re-sharpened blade, and also unbox and setup a new tool!

Missed your videos, was wondering where you were.
@@tonywebb3867 fell off the wagon for awhile. I've got a woodworking project filmed. Just need to edit it
Nice...I hv some mahogany...getting... okoume and purple heart or maple to make one..🎉
The solution is to go get longer screws like everyone else
It would have been so much better if you talked 👎
Expected a planer review not a cart build.
Nice tour. At our woodworking school they have spacers that allow for precise miter cuts closer to the blade. 5, 10, 12 inches etc.
Nice video John, even nicer shop ! I noticed the Wisconsin plates on your wall. I just moved to Grafton Wisconsin from Connecticut, I am in the middle to end of setting up my shop in a 1 car garage. Got some good ideas from your video….thanks again
Your title is very misleading, i thought this was a review/comparison.
How has it held up after 2 years?
Dust collection seems like a critical part of shops. Me...I'm as lazy as the day is long. Don't have dust collectors. My wood chips are like a Woodstock concert where they are all free to gallivant. tHanks for the video. Have a super New Year, wishing you all the best for 2024 and beyond!
You could try putting the output of your mini collector to the suction side of your larger collector and use the cyclone and filter media on it. Use it as a booster for the stationary unit and It would clear some of the clutter on the floor around the saw.
If you can, you should just vent the dust outside of your shop and you'd be able to do away with the cyclones and dust bags.
Most dust collectors rarely achieve the stated cfm. Normally they’re tested without any filter on the “back” or exhaust side of the collector. As you said though your biggest cfm loss is at the collector with the flex hose. But dust/chip separators also decrease cfm. I’m in the same boat and have considered the same solution you came to. Nice video, dust collection can be a pain!
Cool shop man, and I hope you get the tablesaw all worked out and dialed in for what you want.
Thank you very much! It's an ongoing project to perfect the setup..
Immediately necking your trunk line down to 4" is also killing your airflow. Maybe a 6" trunk with 4" drops would work better.
I would agree. However, straight from the manufacturer, it comes with a splitter into two 4" pipes. Honestly it's probably not even reaching it's claimed CFM anyway
I bought the same thing on black Friday and I love it. I read all the stuff about it clogging up using a plainer but I only have it on my table and miter saw and it works great!
I agree. I think I must have cut the footage where I talk about how this Jet dust separator's purpose is misunderstood
I use a core box router bit to make finger grips on the end of my boards so they can be used as a 2 sided board. Same bit can be used to make a juice groove on 1 side of the board.
John, you already KNOW I love me a chamfer!!! These are absolutely incredible and I can't wait to use them hahaha! Truly excellent work and that must have taken so much time and effort, just wow. Seriously, thank you and keep up the awesome work!
I mean...who doesn't love a good chamfer?! Uncultured ne're-do-wells!
My shed is a similar size. I insulated the lot and put up plywood on all surfaces, which helps a lot as you can mount stuff directly to the wall for storage.
If I were still using that shed, I probably would have gone that route. Definitely gets terribly cold in there in the winter
Jeez I thought my shop was small 3 metres by two metres , that's about six and a half foot by about nine foot ! But then mine is an electronic work space. Good luck with your new shop 👍👍
Thanks!
Partnered up with Nokia back in the day😂
You ain't wrong!
And i still dont give a rats ass😂
Well how Rf do you do it
Plug the battery in and immediately disconnect it then immediately plug it back in and repeat the process to cycle through the different tones
WHAT!!!
They still can't be hung on a wall.
Nice work John!
Thanks, Tony!
Great looking wood. I am thinking that a track saw might be a good tool for breaking those pieces down.
I just found your channel since I recently got into woodworking-I must say you made a very beautiful cutting board. Congratulations on your work. However, I noticed you used mineral spirits on the board. Isn’t mineral spirits toxic? I barely saw the label on the container, though.
I know that in large doses it can be toxic, but I use just the tiniest bit in a rag and then it pretty much all evaporates from the surface within a few minutes. If time is not of the essence, I'll use water, but then I feel compelled to let it dry for a few hours
Looks great. Got a link to the electrical “track” you used for the Grizzly table saw power?
Bought it on Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094ZLXVYR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
Is that hand crank plastic?
It's steel with a rubberized cover on the knob
@@JohnsTinyWoodshop so do you like it so far? Im about to buy a planer, its either this one or the dw735 with shelix head. What would you suggest?
@@SonsOfThunder229 Since I'm not sponsored by Grizzly, I can speak truthfully...If I could do it all over again, I probably would have stuck with the Dewalt and would do the Shelix upgrade. The Grizzly infeed and outfeed tables are an absolute bear to align. That being said, I would not go back to the Dewalt at this point. My goal is to move up to 3 or 5hp planer
@@JohnsTinyWoodshop if i could bring one in my basement (probably could) i would. But i already have a huge band saw and just bought a 8" jointer, so to make things easier on my wife i think a 13" planer is ok haha. I just want to make the best purchase for that size.
Glad to learn the definition of wobbliness
Stay tuned for more vocab lessons.
Love the soundtrack choices 👌🏼
Nice shop tour! What mobile bases are you using? I'm sorry if you said what they were in the video, and I missed it.
I think I forgot to mention that, but I've got a few Shop Fox bases in use. Two standard duty bases, and one heavy duty base for the table saw. Thanks for watching!
👍
Nice work John!
Thank you!
My 13 inch rigid planer has quite the blower and I don’t need a dust collector for it all I need was a hose and ran it to my 32 gal extra garbage can with wheels on it with a lid that I did put a 3 inch vent on top and it works perfectly with no backups. But all my other tools go through a dust collector
Next level 💯
Nice shop John!
Nice. Some good ideas.
sou marseneiro em casa sim amo muito 🤜👁👁👏👏✌
muchos gracias!
Thanks for the video. Couple of questions. When pressing the bearings on is there a stop that they meet up to or is there a gap that you had to measure between the bearing and the head? Did you need to adjust the outfeed table? I saw you doing something with it.
Hey there. Sorry for the delay in responding. When pressing on the that pulley, it bottoms out against the ledge on the cutterhead. No gap. Also, as far as the adjustment goes, it seems as if the overall diameter of the spiral cutterhead was different than the straight knife that came with it. I was having to adjust the outfeed to be level with top dead center on the spiral cutterhead. Otherwise, I would get severe snipe. I hope that helps you
@@JohnsTinyWoodshop Thank you, that helps.
Just ordered one to replace my Jet jp13 ( which is really a piece of junk, in my opinion. ) Can't wait to get my Grizzly. Have an 8' Grizzle jointer now, and love it. Thanks for doing the review on this...
Could you share a link for that cutting head
I just added the Amazon link in the description. Not an affilitate link. Just straight to Amazon
So what are your dimensions? And do you then glue cork on them? Very nicely done
We’re those 8/4 boards or 4/4 when you started? Or 3/4x2”? What were the finished dimensions? Beautiful
I used 8/4 maple. The rest was either 4/4 rough lumber or 3/4" s4s boards. Final dimensions were 27" x 16" x 3". You didn't ask, but it weighed 30 lbs. as well!
@@JohnsTinyWoodshop I knew it weighed a ton!!!! How much would you charge for that? Ballpark? Thanks
So it’s called John’s Not-So-Tiny Woodshop now😁? Excellent video, I’m moving from a 14’ x 16’ shop to a 7.5’ x 12’ shop soon, not sure how to fit a 2’ x 7’ Roubo, 12” Hammer planer/jointer, and 14” bandsaw into there, glad I sold the Jet contractors saw 3 years ago! And I haven’t missed it.
Looking back, I sometimes wonder if it was all some kind of dream that I used to work out of that shed. Don't know if I could go back. I wish you best of luck
What were your finished dimensions?
It was approximately 22" x 12" x 1 1/2"
Wow, the camera really does add weight, I would have bet that board was at least 2.25" thick. Thanks for clearing that up.
Great work as always.
Thank you!
