A song written by Vernon Oxford. I got to know him quite well when he was over in the UK in the 1970s and played with him several times. A decent, honest, funny but vulnerable man who deserved more recognition in the country music field.

The only song I wrote about the Northern Irish troubles. I hope it makes a point about the folly and madness of war.

Learned this from the Wilson family and the Stewarts of Blairgowrie. A good song for a club singalong.

A beautiful song. I want to visit there myself now. We played this with "Spike" in the Cat's Cradle String Band. 40 years ago. Happy Memories 💐
Take him back!
@spikewoods9565 Yes, that was Dickie's line! 😄
😢
Good one, lad.
is this an audio file that you cant find a trace of anywhere or is it a cover of something unknown you learned? if its an audio file ill post it so professionals can find it (in a discord server)
It's my cover of a song I heard from a friend or acquaintance years ago.
@@spikewoods9565 ah
nice!
Thanks Tim.
My song about the Scilly isles and Tresco in particular. The reference to 'marching feet' in verse 2 harks back to the Roman occupation of the islands.
Is there another name for this song, i am trying to collate all songs onto spotify?
My Dad used to sing this at family gatherings … slightly different wording in places, but so lovely to hear it again as it brings back such good memories of him. Another song I remember from my childhood was “A mother was washing her baby”. Anyone else remember that one?
Is that "my baby has gone down the plughole"? I'd forgotten about that one!
@@lauraharrison8771 That’s the one!
Spike did a cover of that too! Look on this page
My great-grandfather was on this ship and his cousin them both were politicians and died😢
Just found this when looking for information on Trecwn, very good song and so near to the truth.....lol
Just in time for Valentines Day!!
Thanks for the reminder mate.
And my dad too. Went through two world wars. Never claimed a penny from the state. Never complained. Worked like a dog untill he was 80 and died the Monday after he stopped work on the Friday.
Argh this made me cry
This was my dads party piece. Ah memories
A fun song well performed !
Thanks.
My brother fell in 85 he was only a kid he couldn’t swim he was only a kid my father jumped in after him he couldn’t swim either he had to jump in for he couldn’t stand der and do nothing for my brother would of drowned my father nerly drowned aswell I’ll never forget it as long as I live things could of went the other way thank god they dint my father was in hospital for two weeks nomonia true story Swansea summer of 85
Nice version but the original is 'When The Arkansas River Leaves Oklahoma' by Don Williams. George Jackson
I never heard this by Don Williams before singing it. My tune is remarkably similar! It was written by Wayland D Holyfield. I don't know who rewrote it for the Severn idea. I tweaked a few sentences, but that's all.
Good one ! Where do you find all these gems ?
As I say, I collected this from Sam Gorman, one of Pauline's uncles, sitting in a trailer in Uttoxeter. He sang lots of other songs in the unique traveller's way. I feel very privileged to have known him, his family and all of Pauline's other relations.xx
@@spikewoods9565 How wonderful !
Great job dad!
I still have the 78rpm record of it. Green tree Boogie on the B side . . .
Hi Spike 50 years no see still remember visiting you and holidaying in the Silly isles with mum Ed and dad John, coming up with classics like I am a silly bugger yes I am and Jo Kyle-Price is scared of wood lice. Glad to see you are still kicking. Jo xx

I remember seeing you and Ed at the little Thatch on Bristol Rd Gloucester
Well well . . . I remember that venue.
Did you ever record Cocaine Blues?
I've done "Take a whiff" recently. There's lots of versions.
Remember seeing you and Ed at the Little Thatch just ouside Gloucester in the late 60s
Nice one Spike, good stuff.
Thanks.
I wondered how I knew the first and last verses, though I had not heard the rest before. It's a mystery.
With feeling. 🥹
Love the guitar, a sad song well sung.
What a lovely song !
Thanks.
What a nice song.
One of my very favourites !
My Mum used to sing that! Brings back memories. 😊
