They were supercharged, because of the high altitude they operated in. Air is thin at 30,000 feet, the engines need mechanical supercharging to provide more air. Turbocharging comes from stuffing the exhaust back into the intake of the engine. It's a nasty way of making more power.
Turbocharging does not "stuff" the exhaust back into the intake. The exhaust gases rotate a turbine, upon a common shaft w/ another turbine, that is in a separate housing from the where the exhaust side is located. When the exhaust gases rotate the turbine shaft, the turbine on the intake side boosts the air pressure, most likely in this case feeding the supercharger. Many (if not all) of the 2 cycle GMC diesels were super charged some of the larger truck & equipment versions of those engines were twin turbo charged (as they were a "V" configuration) feeding what could be considered the "standard" supercharger.
That big radial is only running on half it's cylinders, and at least one has bad rings!
