FormJAPAN第2回目は書体デザイナーの大曲都市さんです。
イギリス、ロンドンを拠点に書体デザイナーとして活動する大曲都市（おおまがり・とし）は、日本人でありながら名作欧文書体の復刻を手がけるなど、世界的にも一目を置かれる気鋭のデザイナー。近年では、Googleによる多言語フォントの開発プロジェクトで モンゴル文字などノンラテン文字のデザインを担当し、既存のデジタルフォントが少ない国や地域の人々に向けた書体の開発にも意欲をみせている。
　
書体のデザインに対して一切の妥協をみせない大曲は、一方で遊びにも妥協のない人だ。仕事にも遊びにも全力で向かっていくフットワークの軽さやユーモアのセンスに、関わる人たちは自然と惹きつけられていく。そんな大曲の姿勢から、こころを満たす暮らしやデザインのヒントを探ってみたい。

*大曲都市（書体デザイナー）*
1984年福岡県生まれ。武蔵野美術大学視覚伝達デザイン科を卒業後、英国レディング大学の書体デザインコースを修了。2012年にMonotypeに入社し、Metro NovaやNeue Plakなどの名作復刻書体を手がけるかたわら、H&Mやプレミアリーグなどのブランドのカスタム書体を制作。2021年に独立し、現在ロンドンを拠点に活動中。

かつて、「かたち」の前と後ろには、私たちの日常がありました。
ものや空間、ビジュアルコミュニケーションデザインなどとして表出するかたちは、デザイナーやクリエイターたちが日々の暮らしやそこでの気づきをインスピレーションとしながら生まれます。それらは空間や時間を超え、私たちの生活の中に溶けこんでいく。本来、かたちと日常は表裏一体の関係にあり、そこに価値の本質が宿っているように思うのです。
いま、かたちは多様化しています。なかには装飾性やデザイン手法が先行して日常と切り離され、その本質が見えにくくなったものも存在します。
これからの私たちの日常を豊かにするかたちとは何か。その背景には何があるのか。「何かをかたちづくる」「物の本質の現れ」を意味する「Form」は、デザインスタジオ&Formを主宰する丸山新とその仲間たちが、デザインやクリエイティブの本質を探究する取り組みとしてスタートしました。
「FormSWISS」に続き第二弾となる「FormJAPAN」では、ビジュアルコミュニケーションデザインはもちろんのこと、現代美術、映画など、様々な分野で活躍する方たちとの対話を通じ、優れたクリエイティブの起源やクリエイターたちの視点を集めます。
私たちの拠点でもある日本には、欧米とは異なる美や価値観があります。世界で評価される日本の現代クリエーションの現場をたずね、目指したい未来の輪郭線を「Form（＝かたちづくる）」ことを目指します。

*FormJAPAN #2: Toshi Omagari*
The second installment of FormJAPAN features typeface designer Toshi Omagari.
Toshi Omagari, based in London, is a typeface designer from Japan, whose work is highly regarded worldwide. He has undertaken projects such as reviving classic Western typefaces and recently has been involved in designing non-Latin scripts like Mongolian for Google’s multilingual font development project. He also shows enthusiasm for developing typefaces for regions and countries with limited existing digital fonts.
Toshi is uncompromising in his approach to typeface design, yet he’s also someone who doesn’t compromise in his leisure. His lightness, and sense of humor, which he brings with full force both to work and play, naturally draw people to him. Toshi’s serves as a role model for anyone seeking a fulfilling life of design.

*Toshi Omagari (Typeface Designer)*
He was born in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1984. After graduating from Musashino Art University with a degree in Visual Communication Design, he completed the Typeface Design course at the University of Reading in the UK. In 2012, he joined Monotype where he worked on reviving classic typefaces such as Metro Nova and Neue Plak, as well as creating custom typefaces for brands like H&M and the Premier League. In 2021, he became independent and is currently based in London.

Once, there was a strong connection between form and our everyday lives.
Forms that emerge as objects, spaces, visual communication design, etc., are born as designers and creators draw inspiration from their daily lives and insights. They transcend space and time, blending into our lives. Originally, form and everyday life are inextricably linked, and I believe that’s where the essence of value resides.
Now, forms are diversifying. Some are prioritizing ornamentation and design presentational techniques, becoming detached from everyday life, making their essence less visible.
What are the forms that will enrich our everyday lives in the future? What lies behind them? Form, which can mean “to shape something,” or “the essence of things,” became the starting point for Arata Maruyama, founder of the design studio &Form, and his associates as they embarked on an exploration of the essence of design and creativity.
Following FormSWISS, the second installment, FormJAPAN, gathers perspectives from creators who excel in various fields such as visual communication design, contemporary art, and film, through dialogues.
Japan, where &Form resides, has beauty and values different from those of the West. We aim to visit the scene of contemporary Japanese creation, valued worldwide, and outline the contours of the future we aspire to, through form.
