Want to learn about Old Comics. This podcast is designed to inform you about old comics, No New Comics will be used. It carries 3 seperate sections Heroes/Villains, Artists/Writers, Old Comics 101(Books I believe you should check out and read). I offer no investment advice, this is designed only for people who want to read Old Comics. I am new at this so bear with me as I do everything for each...
New subscriber here! Great video on Robert Kanigher. In a world where the artist is usually the main attraction, it is always nice to see a writer getting some attention. I appreciate Kanigher as a master plotter who was great at coming up with original ideas, but his dialog was rather repetitive to me. His list of credits at the end is so impressive. Back then, comic book creators were hard workers. Most modern creators cannot keep up with even a single monthly book.
Glad you enjoyed it. I agree with you on the dialog. Maybe after doing it so long you can fall into a repetitive motion when dialoging. Sometimes it may be a good thing to let some one else dialog and move on to new issue. I have seen that in the past.
everyone talks about the marvel writers, but DC had great artists and great writers.
You are so right. You will find that quite a few artists and writers came from Dc. Mark waid started with impact comics for dc later did the flash and kingdom come. He now works for Marvel. For me company used to not matter. What was inside each book did. Thanks so much for the comment and watching the videos.
Never heard that Marvel had better writers than DC. It depends on the years I guess. But in general, I would argue the reverse. DC certainly had better writers than Marvel in the Golden Age with proven pulp writers like Otto Binder, Alfred Bester, Gardner Fox, John Broome, Edmond Hamilton, etc. Simon and Kirby were Timely/Marvel's best talents but they managed to chase them off to DC where they created way more pages than they did at Marvel during the Golden Age. * * * The Silver Age started at DC with editor Julius Schwartz and his stable of creators rebooting Golden Age characters like Flash, Green Lantern, Atom, etc. * * * Granted, Marvel was more welcoming to new talents in the Bronze with writers like Doug Moench and Steve Englehart. But Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, and Mike W. Barr got their start at DC. * * * Lets give the credit to Marvel in the Copper Age to have given artists a chance to write their own material which gave us the best runs of thhat period with John Byrne on the Fantastic Four and Alpha Flight, Frank Miller on Daredevil, and Walt Simonson on Thor. * * * But, lets not forget the british invasion of the late 80's with renowned and award winning writer like Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Alan Grant all coming to DC first.
I was a big fan of the 70's marvel material. I felt they were at their creative best at that time. Lots of new fresh artwork and writing. Seemed to fade somewhat when jim shooter took over. Don t get me wrong good stuff came out, but a lot was to much of the same type of stuff. I always felt DC had better writers once they hit the 80s, but by then Marvel was king and they seemed unable to compete. Still i loved both the companies and the different directions.
Could you make the bibliography available online also ?? Many thanks.
Actually I am not sure how to do it. If you leave and address at JWSOCC@gmail.com i would be happy to send you the hard copy I used to make the one at the end of the video. I hope you enjoyed it. It was real fun learning all about one of DC's Greatest Writers. I learned a lot of stuff I did not know before.
My brother lost my collection of SSoC comics and comic cards many years ago. Great adventures and artwork, with the dialogue and illustration of an old language and cultures.
Sorry to hear about your collection. I hope were able to read them later on in your life. The entire series was reprinted in soft cover books by Dark Horse. Worth getting it. Thx for your comment.
The Savage Sword of Conan covers was always next level. Great stuff!
I loved the artists who did the covers. Wished i could have showed more of them. Would you like to see the marvel comic artists? Thx for your comment.
I’m just discovering his work on the early 70s Phantom Stranger- beautiful
I was a big phantom stranger fan. His work was such a joy to look at. I am glad to see so many fans of his work. Let me know if there are any other artists you would like to see Thx for watching
@@jwsoldcomiccorner2104 Thank you for posting. I've always been a big fan of Aparo's, but I was completely unfamiliar with his work on PS, and I'm reading it now and thinking this is probably my favorite thing he's ever done. It certainly doesn't hurt that the supernatural/gothic themes allow him to convey alot more in terms of mood/feeling. Another big surprise for me: discovering that Aparo's Batman (which is my fave Bats) was not fully formed at that time and was the result of his evolving as an artist. Reading some of the Brave and Bold of the period, I don't care for his Batman, but it evolved and those ears grew longer and more pointed. Another big surprise: Aparo lettered alot of his PS stories too! Talk about one-stop shopping! Some underappreciated artists I wouldn't mind see more made of: Don Newton, especially his Batman; Mike Grell's Warlord (Grell clearly couldn't draw fast enough for a full monthly but boy are all those splash pages beautiful). George Perez certainly isn't underappreciated, but I wouldn't mind seeing videos regarding some of his lesser-known work like his JLA/JSA crossovers or his Firestorm. Oh, speaking of! I always thought Pat Broderick's work was underappreciated.
You will definately see don newton sometime in the near future. His style blew me away. He died to soon.
Jim Aparo's The Spectre is what I remember most. But there were many other comic books I bought where Jim Aparo did the art on.
Thank you for watching the video. I hope you saw the Partial list of books that Jim Aparo has done at the end of the video.. I am sure that there are some that are not listed as his body of his work is quite vast. I was surprised at how many people are still aware of the artistic contribution he did for the comic book world. He is missed by me. If you would like to see anyone else's work please feel free to leave a small list and i will put it on my list of future podcasts. note: this is a one man operation and it does take time to do these podcasts. thanks again.
The 3 previously unpublished Spectre stories actually first saw print in 1988, in comic book format, in *Wrath of the Spectre #4.* That was a Baxter paper limited series of Aparo reprints. So the book you've referred to did not have the first appearance of those. Thanks for the video.
Thx for the update. I Actually own those and forgot they were there. Appreciate the catch on that. I loved that run of spectres. Thanks for watching.
I have a question for you re: Wrath of Spectre #4: any idea why Aparo's reporter in that first story was drawn to look exactly like Clark Kent? I was thinking that maybe Fleisher's original script was about Kent, but that doesn't seem likely since the reporter allows things to happen that Superman would never allow.
Not sure why, but i thought it was fun. Mikes stories put the spectre back to the way he was in the golden age.
😎 ( I'm not a fan of children in peril covers ; almost kidnapped in 1967) otherwise DCs Bronze Age covers are definitely the best one could find on the spinner racks. Many UA-cam comic fans have agreed to that. The music was well chosen. No doubt about the talent involved. More cover artist presentations 👍!
Thank you for watching it and enjoying it. This is a labor of love for me. I am glad you you survived your previous ordeal. Russ Heath was my favorite cover artist in the early 60's. He did mainly Sea Devils and Challengers of the Unknown. I am still a big fan of 50's and 60's DC Comics. My next one will be a western themed cover presentation. Will take some time due to this being only a One Man project. thanks for the comment.
Wow thx for the tip on the interviews. I was a huge fan of challengers and Sea Devils. Big fan of magnus, turok, mighty samson, and Dr. Solar from Gold Key. Thx for watching and leaving a comment.
😎 Doom Patrol -- my #1 DC Silver Age team book had the distinction of being praised as "The only Marvel book published by DC". Challengers Of The Unknown #2 favorite DC SA team book. Love Gold Key ; Big fan of Little Lulu , have some of those issues. " Who Killed Teddy Bear " (1965) starring Sal Mineo is a gritty , low budget sexploitation crime thriller that makes you feel like you're watching a Doom Patrol adventure minus the team. Saw it twice on TV on the late late show. Comic Book Historians channel hosted by Alex Grand has episodes that feature Todd Armstrong interviews with comic artists and writers ; Arnold Drake and John Broome are two writers interviewed ; well worth watching.
Sorry this is so late. I just found it. I was a huge fan of Challengers of the Unknown. It is amazing how DC can't seem to get the title to work these days. I have read all the remakes and it is sad that they can't get it right. I loved Gold Key comics Magnus, Doctor Solar, Turok, and Mighty Samson. I will try to find the interviews of Drake and Broome. thanks for the heads up on them and your comments.
@@jwsoldcomiccorner2104 😎Actually you did respond back two months ago. I appreciate your response. I agree that it is surprising that The Challs are a challenge for modern interpretations. Gold Key still has a fan base existent with some older UA-camrs such as Shannon of solid4stbend channel , Gary of Bizzare Brain Comics , Gold Key Geezer who is off and on with his channel , and a few others.
Another.fine artist was.Lee Elias from Black Cat to Green Arrow also Tommy Tomorrow. Lost it on Adam Strange his only poor work.
Thx for comment. Also for taking the time to watch it. I really wasn't sure how many fans of jim aparo were out there. My goal is to engage and hopefully get new collectors to maybe look at the work he did.
Jim Aparo's work on the Spectre blew my mind as a teen. His artwork was simply magnificent.Oh,Milt Caniff drew and wrote the comic strip,Terry and the pirates.Strange, you look old enough to remember that.
I might be, i am 68. I did not start reading comics until 1963 to 1964. I really only collected DC superhero comics. Superman being my primary hero. I have been in and out of the comic industry from 1977 till 2019. Still never read terry i will have to pick up some to read. Thx for watching and leaving a comment.
Oddly enough, as a teenager at the time, it was with him that I discovered Batman in the French editions 🙂 Thanks for this video 👍
You are so welcome. It does my heart good to hear from all that leave a comment. There will be more content comming. The last 2 years i have had some medical setbacks. I am good and working on some new stuff. Thx again.
@@jwsoldcomiccorner2104 I am glad to hear you are doing better.
Thank you for that. Let me know of any artists or writers you would like to see. It may take a little time as of my one man operation. Thx for the 2nd comment.
@@jwsoldcomiccorner2104 , I'm curious and open mind 😉
Great tribute to a fantastic artist . Brave and the Bold also his Aquaman was some of my favorite childhood memories but my favorite comic cover was Batman #291 where some of the villains are claiming they killed Batman at his gravesite.
Thank you for watching the video. I really loved his artwork. I found his history really interesting to read. Thx for commenting.
i liked aparo's work a lot, the batmans, aquamans, and of course the spectre,....but another comic of his i loved gold key's phantom...def a workihorse and easily in the hof for comic artists,...
thx for watching the video. i loved all his work. My biggest regret was never meeting him and thanking him.
Terry and the Pirates and a touch of Hal Forester in his style. One of the Workhorses of DC. He was one of the artists you could talk to.
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. Jim was one of my go to artists. I collected anything that he drew. i loved his Brave and the Bolds. I was a big team-up fan. My only regret was I never got a chance to meet him. Thank you again for the commentary.
⭐ 'promosm'
One of my all-time favorites. Loved Russ Manning’s art, he was a great story teller.
thanks for the Comment. I loved Magnus and the stories and art done by the great Russ Manning. I also became a big fan of Wally Wood's Artwork.
@@jwsoldcomiccorner2104 I first saw Wally’s work on Daredevil early on in it’s run. Followed him to Thunder Agents, then got into his other stuff, like Sally Forth, in college. Great craftsman
@@kevinjennings6984 mine was when i bought the all-star Comics #58? intro powergirl. After that I looked for more and found daredevil, Cannon(Independant) and a lot of his 50's stuff. Don't know if you know this. Russ Manning I believe did some star wars newspaper strips in the late 1970's.
@@jwsoldcomiccorner2104 I know he was a prolific artist who worked at a lot of different places, just not Marvel or DC as I recall. He was especially good at drawing female characters
i don't know how much art he has done yet, i will profile him one of these days and hopefully get a decent bibliography of his work. thanks for this conversation I have been in the industry for a long time distributing and mostly retail. I do miss talking about comics. Let me know if these podcasts are okay or if i can improve upon them. I am strictly a one man operation always learning to try and make them watchable.
Definitely an underappreciated artist
Yeah I first appreciated him from his Ghost Rider Books. I later collected all I could find of his artwork. His time was short but awesome.
Thx. Mike ploog is the best. It was great seeing you again.
Hey JW - fantastic! Great running into you again - loved the format, knowledge, everything. Read an article about a makeup artist named Rob Bottin who worked on Carpentor’s movie The Thing & Ploog did the layouts - i love mike ploog (still looking for that wwbn32) - again, great work & looking forward to #2!
