The Royal Tomb: Let's Play Monomyth: part 8
Monomyth is a fantasy dungeon crawler with crafting and survival elements. We play as a young price who has foolishly rushed off to rescue his brother without taking any servants or bodyguards with him. Imprisoned, we now find ourselves at the mercy of our captors yet all is not lost. As luck would have it we have been placed in the only cell the architect saw fit to contain an escape tunnel.
Our quest to rescue our brother continues.

I see said the blind man to his deaf wife on the telephone 📞 😆
If you are going blunt damage there is a spiked mace in the barracks 😉
I must have missed that. Oh well, I'll be going back there to collect those short swords at some point. The problem with the blunt skill is that it doesn't add to shield use the same way the bladed weapon skill does. That, and the general lack of blunt weapons in the early game makes it fairly unattractive in comparison.
27:32 Looks like I need to go back and check that corner behind those barrels now doesn't it?
For the portcullis?
haven't been able to watch the series as my account is screwed up and doesn't believe I'm 18. my apologies. Also the bata for Monster hunter Wilds is out on until Monday on PC I'd gibe it a shot do some research into the games mechanics and how weapons work. looking that the MH wilds mechanics overview and then picking a weapon of choice should be sufficient. I'd see if you can get a friend who has more exprince with the series to help out to begin with. hope you give it a look.
Sorry your account's still messed up. I hope you can get that fixed soon.
Imagine a Netflix TV series of these books
I remember first encountering these books at a old book shop ( remember them) in the 80's in my search for back copies of marvel( notably daredevil) and DC comics.. The artwork was amazing seeing ninja's in a fantasy lord of the rings world was cool
It was pretty epic wasn't it?
If you died would you start from the beginning or where you left off on these audio podcasts
I think it would depend on the death but my default ruling is that I'd restart from the beginning of the current book rather than the beginning of the entire series.
So that's where you got that signet ring 💍. That ring comes in handy in later adventure
Any more Monomyth coming Raph?? 😊
Yes. Absolutely. I was just too exhausted to record anything at all last night.

Question ⁉️ what was that opal ring useful for anything
Yes. It comes in very useful at a couple of specific locations in book 2. It protects you from scrying when a villain is trying to spy on you.
Could you recover those 3 shurikens that were used against yeamon in that last fight
Nope. Evidently not but I'll get some more eventually.
very enjoyable
29:12 Wanker of Doom!😂
Absolutely. Got to get creative when venting. it helps lighten the mood, raise the tone slightly and make it seem silly instead of frustrating. It's a good relief technique. Plus it sounded just as funny in my head as it did coming out of my mouth :).
37:20 Voice of an angel
great voice of this but his deduction skills are hard to watch.... maybe try equipping the hammer to beat the heated up piece of gear? I never played this I'm only guessing. But dam man.....
Hey there. I'm playing the game now and wondering if my game is bugged. I have the "Orc Document" aka the orc hide with letters or whatever, but when I try to show it to the Chief, he says all hope is lost, one paragraph only and that's all we can talk to him about that topic. Then I can't click the Chief again after that. I think either a) I have to go to the Witch now and see if she knows what the document is about, or b) my game is bugged and the Chief should have said more. Anyway, can you please let me know what's up with this without spoilers? Thanks!!
I think you might need to talk to Babur the craftsman about it.
I know you have more videos after this, so I'm not sure if you figured it out after this (I'm still early in this video), but when you are hammering a weapon or shield, you will get a different clang sound when you hit a weapon that is done being improved.
Meeting Eddie the Eagle..hmm
Not quite that Eddie. Not quite :).

I actually had some more to say about Eddie but I'll add it in the next episode.

Did you notice in this book that the image you're given after fighting the Magians - of the snake biting the apple - serves as a map of the safe route through the final dungeon? You don't need it if you have the Hatuli, but it's another bonus from going that route along with the wand.
I did notice but only disturbingly late. The snake that wraps around the safe route even ties in to the little snake you see slivering away down that passage when you come in to the dungeon.
..yay more.. Thanksyou for the fun content..!

1:45:26 You can access your backpack, while trading, by clicking [Switch]. Remember: You can burn down or smash wooden doors, as taught in the tutorial. Using a spell, it even does not take durability out of a weapon or torch. Kicking them down works, but is annoying, because of the insane stamina consumption. F5 quick safes your game. In those classic dungeon crawlers, I played in the nineties, you were expected to draw your own map by hand, on paper and to take other notes. For some it was close to impossible to solve them, without doing that. So it is perfectly normal, to use a map, put markers on it and take notes, for such games. 41:31 Quite interesting how different the journeys in such open world games can be. But I think yours is very unique in how late you decided to take that path, and thus in how you only found the Chapel of Rahi, after exploring most of Lysandrian Heartlands. It is funny, for how many of your in-game hours I waited for you to go there. ;-) I was there maybe 15 mins after first entering Lysandrian Heartlands. 1:11:39 If you ask NPCs "Tell me about ..." "Yourself", you are not revealing your identity and secrets to him, but you ask the NPC to tell you something about himself. Also investigating the Chapel (of Rahi), about the Primeval Seed, is literally a quest objective, right from the beginning. This could be a consideration in your decision not to talk to the priest about it. Pushing levers usually opens passageways, right next to them, not in some distant location.
I think what might be affecting how that ""noble"" talks to you is the equipment on you. When you first talked to him, you were wearing noble clothes and using a sword. Now you have leather gear and a wooden club, making him look down upon you.
Interesting. Thanks for the reminder.
Indeed interesting. I sold my noble cloth, but lets see how he reacts, when I confront him in heavy armor ...
Interesting foray, keep up the good work. That burning hands spell might come in handy against those ruffians, let's hope you'll find some more spells you can employ against them, without having to satisfy a high intelligence requirement beforehand.
Lets go!
Just started watching this episode..awaiting the time you hit something with that club
Thanks Raph, great episode and lots of good progress. Looking forward to the next
These books were superb along side the other fighting fantasy books by ian Livingston. The mixture of oriental Japanese, pre islamic Persian with medieval European fantasy lore was amazing... Ninja's in a lord of the rings fantasy world with exotic lands and creatures captivated the mind... The series came to a sudden end with book six inferno but years later a new book was written named redeemer
It's actually funny because, in the letters column in White Dwarf, Dave Morris* once claimed "I'm not going to just drop a ninja into my medieval fantasy setting because it's flavour of the month." He explained that he'd use things relevant to the setting he was writing an adventure for. I can't remember if this was a direct dig at the Way of the Tiger or just some fantasy game authors in general who's stuff felt a little inconsistent and disconnected. *At least I think it was Dave Morris. Basically his point was, if I want to tell a ninja story I'll do a proper oriental setting instead of shoehorning it in somewhere else.
Further reply (but kept separate). Book 6 has a number of errors in it. I've never played book 6. Originally I'm not even sure I knew it existed until I discovered the pdfs many years later. I plan to play all the way to book 6 then do the prequel (book 0) and finally book 7 so that I'll be covering them in published order. Bok 7 brings an end to the series in a way that book 6 did not manage to do. Apparently there was always supposed to be a book 7 to come after 6 but it didn't happen. I don't know how close the new book 7 is to the original intentions for that book but I believe it was reasonably well received.
I don't know about the rest of your audience, but you don't need to replay the entire book if you get killed on my account. If it's a combat encounter, just roll back to the start of the encounter and fight it through again. If you fail a save-or-die fate roll, just roll back to before the roll and try again. I think that will save time all round.
Oh I was planning, for the rematch, starting with the brigand encounter, skipping to section 281 for the defence roll against Tyuchev, then taking the damage for the Sun Star ring and fighting Mardohl but skipping almost all narration. Basically if Tyuchev doesn't stab you, you can take 2 or 3 hits from Mardohl and probably drop him in 2-3 hits (finishing with a Kwon's Flail kick empowered by inner force). I shouldn't have missed so many attacks in that fight but neither should the son of Nil who should have truly punished me for all those misses. The combination of an early miss and low endurance (thanks to Tyuchev) forced me into a pattern of blocking until his attacks missed so that I could dedicate inner force once again to an attack.
I don't mind if he does or not..
The deadly trio. Thank you for another great playthrough, bloodsword and way of the tiger were the best.
They're certainly some of the most memorable villains I've ever encountered in a solo adventure.
52:38 That made me laugh out loud!
Yeah, I might just have to record a rematch. Since I get a full heal after the warlord fight at the barrows I'd always be going into the Brigand encounter with full health and the same items but the only difference would be the amount of Inner Force I'd have.
Your battle with the Mardolh was epic! Not en easy foe to defeat, do or die indeed!
The thing is, I wouldn't have minded dying to Mardohl that much. It was recording everything else to get back to this point again that I wasn't liking as it would be virtually identical with the only difference being the dice rolls. I didn't mind walking away with 1 Endurance point because I knew I'd get a total heal after the fight anyway (this book gives total heals after almost every tough fight, not a pattern that's so obvious among the rest of the series).
You missed a trick in the Lady in Grey fight - if you cast a spell at her, she automatically counters it, but when she does she loses concentration on keeping the old knight paralysed, and he completes his strike and kills her. (So, casting any spell at her is an auto-win.) You're right that there are some very rough fights in this book. Particularly the Eislaken. (Getting the flying carpet is a good way round (over) this one!) Also, you have to find the legion standard to be able to win, and doing so requires taking very specific steps (e.g. you have to follow the funeral procession - if you attack it straight away, you are not allowed to investigate where it is going, so can't find the cathedral), as well as persisting through the very nasty trials. I remember being quite lost for a while about how to avoid auto-defeat against the Warlock-King's army when I first had the book. A very tough book if you have no prior knowledge!
Thanks. I'd remembered that she counters but forgotten she looses concentration on her other spell.
God, that slime going through the bars would be horrifying.
4:10 - actually, the enemy gets a +2 to attack, I believe. Because, as I recall, to hit against a defense you must EXCEED the defense but in order to successfully block you must roll LESS THAN the defense. So , if I have a defense of 7, the enemy must roll 8 or higher to hit, and if they do I must then roll 6 or lower to block. This exactly accounts for the -2 penalty we pay on our next attack roll. I'm not sure about blocking. In theory, this should be the edge that allows us to no-sell some 40% of enemy attacks, but since you're almost guaranteed to miss the next attack, we're also essentially giving the enemy another free attack before we can respond. I have to wonder whether sometimes it's better just to take the hit in the hopes of actually being able to land a blow next round.
2 indeed. Generally blocking is for emergency use only and not for every round you get hit. While the re-roll is easier for the enemy the fact that you're forcing a second roll includes a second chance of failure. If they hit that doesn't change the outcome. If they miss then their entire first roll is wasted - nullified. It seems like it's worth it against attacks that rolled really high but should have missed anyway because it's not going to do much against an attack where our defence was low.
No, no. It is 1. In your example the enemy hits on an 8+, when blocking the same attack the enemy hits on a 7+. So it is just a 1 point difference after all.
You're right; the enemy must roll 7 or higher to hit on this second attempt. So it's a difference of 1, not stil. a bit harder to block but not as bad as I thought. Even so, I'm leading a collaborative playthrough and we're missing a LOT of blocks.
A bit harder but you get a second chance for them to miss. How do you feel about section 281? You are told that you try to block but would you allow a block outside of combat? I'm leaning towards the block in that section being narrative rather than mechanical especially as it would set a precedent for other out of combat attack rolls.
@@raphaelperry8159 Having read the section AS WRITTEN I have to treat the block as Tyutchev needing a 7 or higher (in other words, a normal block) to hit. There's nothing in the text to suggest we should treat this block any differently from any other. The one thing I'm sure is in book 3, I actually heard from the authors about this: In the combat with the halforcs on the dead city path, "Make a fate roll" means "roll 1 die", not 2 die. If you roll a 5 or 6 on one die while fighting the swarm of half-orcs you are hit for 1d6 damage -- a 33% chance. That's far less lethal than other interpretations. At the end of the day, if the game doesn't seem to make sense a certain way then play it differently. In other books, a throw grants +2 to hit AND to damage, and that's the way I play it throughout, even if the rules change between books.
I feel like this is one of those games where splitting skill points into too many skills will have you stuck with mid-level equipment in the endgame. The enemies are so far and few between that each level you gain matters. I still love watching you play this though. I Can't wait to see what the next few areas have in store.
On a roll for sure, Raph, and yes lots of fun adventure ahead! May the dice gods be with you!
Just wait 'til section 281. That random roll alone can make or break the next episode.
Brilliant playthrough fella, keep up the good work. Always appreciated
It's certainly been enjoyable.
@raphaelperry8159 Good, main thing is you still enjoy the play through. Good for me to see the changes from original
Don't worry. If other people's videos about this game have taught me anything then apparently to be "good" at this game and get loads of views I need to get a sex change, be about 20-30 years younger, have a foreign accent (Canadian, American, Dutch and Swedish being the most popular for some reason), run around ignoring everything, not pay attention to things, talk over cutscenes and dialogue and miss blatantly obvious important information then be confused by it. And have a face cam despite people telling me that my autism means they have a hard time reading my facial expressions.
All things I might joke about in the next episode. I mean hey, I almost brought it up at the beginning of this one a bit tongue in cheek.
Red and blue potions do stack. It's just a bit tricky stacking things in the bottom row.
