27/3/2022 - A historical day at Colombo International Airport - Ratmalana ( CIAR ) with the arrival of Maldivian Q2944, a DHC-8 Q300 registered under 8Q-IAA, marked the re-commencement of scheduled international regional flight operations from CIAR after 54 years with a water salute on its inaugural arrival into Ratmalana from Maldives.
CIAR became the first airport in the country with its establishment on 28th February 1938 by the Governor Sir Andrew Caldecott whom launched the Air Mail service between Colombo and Mumbai using the Mail Room at Ratmalana Aerodrome.
The national carrier of Maldives, Maldivian, launched the international regional flight operations between its main hub, Velana Airport and Colombo International Airport - Ratmalana today.
Maldivian will operate scheduled flights on a Dash-8 aircraft with 50 seats between Sri Lanka and the Maldives three times a week and the frequency will be increased up to five flights from May 2022 onwards.
