What are the usual confidence values of these statistical projections? Does that apply here?
With life expectancy, at least with US data, no. That's because the data are not from a random sample, they are from complete counts of deaths by age.
Hi and thanks for this lecture I just give a comment, actually interactionism not a micro theory as we know blumer who was one of the best student of mead , explained this.he mentioned that we can study social fact in micro, macro and also in global level.but the important thing is the concept of join action as a key concept in sociology.in fact micro or macro not a theory ,they are the sterategy of research that we can chose their related to our topic and our research. Best regards.
Nice try fellas... tough situation........... surround and drown.
Thank you for creating this video, it help me in my ESS class
You are a pathetic gelding.
I think you may be looking at DJT from the wrong angle. I think he is sociologically fascinating because he operates “outside the box”. He respects no law, no norm, and no one. He operates on his own values. Which is why you cannot sociologically look at him from “inside the box”, one must observe him like an anthropologist would observe an unknown jungle tribe. You see so many journalists outrage over DJT breaking forms and norms because they assume he operates under their social norms & values. He does not. My $0.02!
This is interesting. Do you know how life expectancy adjusted to income is measured? When is the income part calculated, for old people who i presume are retired? are they using some kinda "Max income achieved in life" type thing?
Dwight is that you?
Why haven't you ever completely translated the women's fertility US Census
Every country needs to fix an ideal TFR. The ideal TFR for India needs to be much lower because it is already congested, and because it is susceptible to global warming.
It's like they didn't hear him. They should've asked about married couples and poverty
I have been teaching Social Problems for 33 years. face to face. Your lecture is excellent!
thank you!
The "men had it all" argument is irrelevant because we live in the present, not the past. The "commanding heights" argument is also irrelevant because nearly all men are excluded from them. Society is "female-dominated" because the West has, very recently and very rapidly, chosen women over men. They have chosen service industries, which are more suited to women, while they exported manufacturing abroad. They are betting on women big time, as women are less disruptive and more compliant than men. Women are thus more elite-friendly. Elite men benefit tremendously from all this. They don't give a stuff about ordinary men, who have none of the benefits of old and many more burdens of new. Just look at the trend in lawmaking. Look at the laws brought in against free speech, "upskirting", "coercive control" and the like. Look at the culture and how it treats women and men. Men are either stupid or evil in popular media nowadays. Women can have their cake and eat it. Women can criticise men and the media trumpets it all but if a man criticises a woman it's a hate crime. I wonder how this man would feel if he lost his job to a woman. Would he be okay with "balancing historical inequalities" then? The analysis is not sufficient to get at the key incel problem. Contemporary society lacks any motivation towards monogamous relationships. Previous societies had mechanisms which encouraged marriage and monogamy. Those have gone. Now you have a society where the sexes actually owe nothing to each other. The elites tell us we have to care about women for whatever reason, but the elites are increasingly being ignored. Men are increasingly saying "no woman is going to help me, so why should I help women?".
Trust me, the understanding of this is based on race, 100%
Persuasive. Especially given that demographic transition doesn’t stop at “normal” but proceeds to ultra low fertility, something that shouldn’t surprise anyone. Do Europeans and Americans, Australians etc think that they won’t go as low as Japan and South Korea? Lol, most likely they will.
Why do you barely mention any positive attributes about fathers? Your material is extremely bias and quite frankly paints a negative picture about men.
very interesting lecture.
Unfairness is the cause of all human social problems
Super sir thank you give more videos in sociology.
Most people think that they will be the exception, as they delude themselves through life.
People do that with death too - until it's too late - thankfully lots of scientists are looking for ways to stop and reverse ageing
Very informative and well presented! Thanks a lot!
Sir I want to discuss about my studies with you
Hello
So, how do we process for example, that in Canada, life expectancy in 2020 was 82 years, but average age of death was 76? Granted not much of a difference, but still not the exact same number.
Average age of death is not the same measure. The relationship between them is complicated!
@@PhilipNCohenSociology indeed, but while your video states that life expectancy should not be measured as a projection, it seems many governments and media use it for this exact reason. Cheers!
@@cdb5001 It is a projection but not a forecast: "It is important to understand that these are projections and not forecasts. As we do not know what the future will hold, we make assumptions about how mortality rates will change in the future." Source: www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/lifeexpectancies/methodologies/periodandcohortlifeexpectancyexplained#what-estimates-of-life-expectancy-do-we-produce
@@hamza-ny9ge yeah I don't disagree, I just disagree with the claim that life expectancy is extending when in reality, it is the rate of newborns dying dropping that accounts for this. In reality, most people die between the age of 70-80, and even then, it's not entirely accurate. I researched a stat from the WHO that 49.6% of all deaths are those 70+, meaning that there's a majority of people that actually die before 70! So, while we cannot predict the future, as you so rightly and eloquently stated, I take issue most with this idea that we use life expectancy as a 'feel good' buffer for modern medicine when in reality, we gloss over the very real failings of said modern medicine. Most people that like past 70 experience no appreciable quality of life over their predecessors. Blood pressure and cholesterol are treated with statin drugs as opposed to lifestyle changes and cancer treatment is no different today in essence than it was 60 years ago (all this talk of immunotherapy 10 years ago has drifted into the wind). So, I take issue with this lie that the western medicine system and pharmaceutical companies love to use as if they actually care about people and not dollar signs. Also, sorry for the rant.
Great video. Now this measure is an average of all fertily women, but it won't that clearly show alarming trends, for example if women drastically would stop having kids at all the TFR would not go to zero but just decline, it would of course show the trend but not the drastic change. I guess crude fertility rate is perhaps a better measure to see the status at this moment?
So we should expect women to do better at certain fields and that's expected in "egalitarian" societies ? But shouldn't expect men to do better at Certain things than women in egalitarian societies?
Don't be silly. If a man is better than a woman at anything, it is because of patriarchy and sexism.
@@spurge83 Followed by if a woman is better than men and anything there has to be a matriarchal Influence
Sir what are the effects of social problem??
If a woman gets twins is it taken into account? you have take the data in the form of yes or no for a specific age. 5:09
Ideally it should be taken into account. In the data I used it is not, however. That produces slightly different results - good point.
great introdction
Very interesting video. Thank you for sharing, and I would like an explanation of the system of blame vs person blame.
Some researchers calculated the life expectancy with data from the 2020 period, saw that is was 1.5 years lower than 2019. Now some people wrongly concluded that Covid knocked 1.5 years off the average lifespan. Given the rapid development of the vaccine, the average person (who takes the vaccine when offered to them) will only lose 40 odd days due to Covid.
Cohen, you're a functionalist hack.
Hi, I recently read a blurb from your book enduring bonds after finding your old post clarifying the claim that black women are the most educated group in the US and you were so respectful and earnest in you critique that I wanted to hear more from you on social and cultural formation. I can't afford you're book right now but I would be interested in hearing more of your thought of how systemic oppression/inequality , nonorthodox or broken families, and culture/race/sexual identity all inform each other. If you have the time and are interested my message me here and I can provide my email. Hope you are having a nice day.
Thanks. Lots of stuff you can read on my blog about these issues: familyinequality.com

I find it weird that in the research chart from the Censes, I was never asked those questions..
I think one problem in society is that society is not open to hearing peoples stories teaching people that they are not important enough to hear thier stories would be bad social behavior , lady fowler
