Meh…. You need to put it to work with a pick and drive it. Guild 512 owners will not be swayed…This guitar has a nice sound though.
Guild 512 is surely a very nice guitar. I think, at this price level, most 12 string guitars are good enough (LOL) to keep their owners happy. Like, the Guild owners won't be swayed by a Martin and vice versa. However, the x30-12 has a competitive edge in being a very dependable instrument: no maintenance required, keeps tuning well (even when the humidity changes), cannot be destroyed by too low or too high humidity, always sounds the same... If the sound is good enough, these are huge advantages in my book! An, in my opinion, the sound is more than good enough. My cheaper spruce-rosewood Guild has been parked in its case for a long time now. Also, regarding the sound. This Emerald guitar has a very consistent low end (I forgot to mention this in my review): all notes in the bass register are meaty and punchy. This is very important for this style of strumming. In my experience, most other guitars have some unevenness in the bass register: some notes are just not very bassy (either the lowest ones or, sometimes, a couple of notes in the middle of the bass register). Regarding "working with a pick"... I would lose what I have now: having the rhythm and the bass parts at the same time. It might have been an acceptable compromise if I really liked the sound of strumming with a pick. But it's the other way around - I happen to really like the sound of strumming with fingers (combined with the bass finger picking). This is the style that I fell in love with from the first song that I heard. This is also the style that inspired me to learn more advanced playing rather than just strumming a handful of chords. Yes, there was a lot of classical guitar afterwards, but this style was definitely the first push, the first inspiration. Thanks for stopping by. :)
For contrast go to Martin 12 reviews.
Yeah, I like the sound of Martin hd28-12. And its neck width is what I need (probably even better for me than the x30's neck - in the latter the neck width quickly increases as you go up; that's beneficial in many cases but not for the style I'm playing in). However, at the Martin's saddle the string pairs are not separated well, and it's quite challenging to play those bass-rhythm patterns. Also, according to the photos at Thomann Music website, Martin didn't care to intonate the saddle individually for the 4th string pair (D) and the 5th string pair (A). The octave within each pair will not remain pure if you move up the neck - thicker strings need to be longer than thinner strings. One last thing I'd like to... admit :) here is that I'm tired of babysitting my guitars (keeping them in cases, maintaining the humidity and the humidifiers...) - it's fantastic to have a guitar that is always on the stand within an arm's reach and always ready to go. And I only need to tune it once every 1-2 weeks. But the sound of that Martin is beautiful!
Might be his playing (picking style) but the guitar sounds very thin.
At first, I wanted to adamantly disagree but... I think, I understand what you mean. There are many things to say here (this topic may even deserve its own video). I'll try to be concise. ((*1*)) We all judge guitar sound somewhat differently. There is a very good review of Emerald x30 (6 string) by Alex Ryan, where he compares the sound of x30 and Martin hd28. To me (and to Ryan, and to one of my friends) the x30 clearly sounded better. However, for another friend of mine the hd28 sounded better - also clearly. There are other guitars that I don't particularly like because of their sound but others rave about them. ((*2*)) x30 doesn't have some of those attractive resonances in mid-low frequencies that many other acoustic guitars have. Those resonances may sound great in many scenarios, but when playing that bass-rhythm, it's important for me that the bass notes sound consistent. On x30, even the lowest note (drop D) sounds nice and meaty. The guitar does, however, have a mild resonance around the low F, but it's tolerable and even adds some character. ((*3*)) You may be right about my way of playing - I'm mostly strumming just on the first 3 strings (the first 3 string pairs, to be exact). And the bass, of course. Very seldom, I strum all the strings but then it's by the meat of my thumb - that creates quite soft sound. The style that I demonstrated in this video, was created by a singer-songwriter Rozenbaum. I remember falling in love with that guitar sound when I first heard it in 1986. However, this musician is almost completely unknown in the West. When I recently showed his playing to one of my friends in Germany, his response was skeptical "well... it doesn't really sound like a 12-string guitar". )))) I strive to get a certain sound when I'm playing, but you may dislike that very sound that I'm striving for. ((*Conclusion*)) Thanks for your comment - it's an interesting conversation to have, for sure! To sum up, for me, the x30-12 has the best balance of properties and compromises. There are very few things that I would change (and almost all of them are style related, i.e., the same things can be beneficial when playing in another style).
Sound port.
I'm not sure what you mean here, sorry. I'll try to clarify the terminology that I use. So far I've been using the term "sound hole" for the main hole in the guitar body for projecting the sound to the audience; and the term "sound port" for the additional hole for projecting the sound directly towards the player. What x30-12 has I call "a sound hole".
Hearing a 12-string song like "Wedding Song" (Stookey), "For Emily" (Simon & Garfunkel), "Tambourine Man" (Byrds version) might help sell the guitar.
Thanks for the tips. I checked out these songs and I have to admit that I didn't like them enough to learn them (although I was very(!) impressed with the vocal in "For Emily"!) I bought this guitar for playing in a particular style (open G, strumming both bass and rhythm simultaneously or occasional simple finger picking). It was impossible for me to find any sound samples of x30-12 in this style, and I thought it might be helpful for someone to hear them in my review. And I'm quite happy with this guitar (not selling it). But thanks, I'll take another good look at those songs if I ever need to sell a 12 string.
I great stuff I own an X12-30 myself without the veneer top was the guitar also DI into a mixing desk ?
I actually like the sound of the pure carbon fiber top quite much. My guess is that the right type of veneer adds some complexity to the sound, but it also adds weight to the guitar top. And it's good for the guitar top to be light. So, there is a good chance that the pure carbon fiber version (your version) is the best sounding version of all! :) I wish I could compare different builds myself. Oh well... Regarding your question: the recording was done like this: (1) mic MXL Revelation Mini FET at 1 meter into Zoom F8n (that's both mic preamp and an ADC, the result is recorded to the SD card in the F8n at 24bit 96kHz); (2) mic sE8 at 3 meters into Tascam CA-XLR2D-F (that's both mic preamp and an ADC, the stream 24bit 48kHz is digitally streamed to my Fujifilm camera and recorded lossless within a MOV file)
Great review, awesome sound! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! It was my pleasure to share this info. I considered saying more, but it would be a very long review. I decided to present only what was most important for me.
Отличное исполнение, благодарю ! 🤝👍🤝

Nah, wrong frequency ))))) Seriously though, it's annoying how many sport venues have flickering lights. This makes it highly unpleasant to watch and kills the video quality too.
Lovely 🙂

:) ua-cam.com/video/4KN0ncNBAhk/v-deo.html
Да, "Нарисуйте мне дом" в репертуаре есть. Запишу как-нибудь. :)

Yes, I just sent you an email.
