How to Determine Percentage of Stretch for all Knits
Thank you! You are a treasure trove of information.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you enjoy it!
Janet, these concepts seem so obvious (now!) that I wonder why I never figured them out myself? I've been sewing for many years and have bought hundreds or thousands of cute/interesting/stylish patterns--but I've never sewn them up. Probably because instinctively I knew that starting from scratch and sewing the whole thing would have resulted in fitting failure. Going forward my approach is going to change. Thank you!
I am so glad you get it and have plans for a smoother sewing experience. Email if you have questions along the way. islandersewing@comcast.net
I would like to know how to change commercial pattern seam allowance of 5/8 to 3/8 or 1/4. Especially collars or collar stands
So, if I want to make a ‘regular sleeve cap’ instead of an extremely puffed sleeve, where should I match the two sleeves )assuming from your demo I would be sure both on straight of grain and aligned at underarm to copy the more standard sleeve??
Review the very first demo to see that you will use the sleeve cap from the existing pattern. Start the new sleeve at the underarm of the sleeve.
Where can i get the book?
www.islandersewing.com/books Happy Sewing!!
That white fabric is really pretty.
So glad I found Janet.
I'm so glad you found me too!
Excellent, thank you
So helpful! But what if you remove bigger chunks and the difference when redrawing the sleeve cap is so big it’s hard to eyeball it back into place??
First off, Do not ever use the original pattern. Always trace a copy just incase you need to refer to the original. Secondly, start with small amounts of change. Don't go big to start with! Happy Sewing!!
Shirt Maker Express pattern & Craftsy class are the best way to learn how to sew a shirt - highly recommend! Still watch and use it to this day!
So glad you're still enjoying it! Be sure to check out my full selection of men's and women's shirt patterns at www.islandersewing.com. Happy Sewing!! Janet
Hello, Thank you so much for the high praise. If you have a chance would you send us a photo or two of the shirts you have made? We enjoy sharing them in our newsletter and FB as inspiration to others thinking of making a shirt. (islandersewing@comcast.net). Happy Sewing!! Janet
Found the link to purchase this pattern 😁
Enjoy making the CS1201! Let me know how it goes. Happy Sewing!!
I like this better than the temu duo i bought.
So glad you like it!
Please clarify. I have a light weight jersey knit. What can I use in place of the silk organza? Thank you.
Knits do not require underlining.
Using crayons is clever!
Thank you for another great video. I hope the pant sloper is coming up soon. Penny
Thank you, Penny! It will be here sometime this year.
Thank you for the color button question. Victoria Burton
For the challenge, does the garment have to be photographed on a person, or can it be on a hanger. I am thinking of making a shirt for my sister in another state and it would be difficult to get a picture of her wearing it. I love you shows and have learned a ton. I’ve watched every one, some many times. I have made two shorts and the Express Jacket.
Sometimes laying it on a big table displayed as if it we being worn works well. Hangers can work but definitely not wire hangers. Happy Shirt Making!!
Catching one live! Yeah!!
Your Crafty classes are excellent! I learned so much making that jacket.
Thank you, That was my first Craftsy class and I am very proud of it!
That’s awesome!😋
Glad you liked it so much! Happy Sewing!!
My button hole maker is absolutely HORRIBLE. Brother Inovis machine, it’s not a great machine!
I have yet to find a modern sewing machine of any brand that does an excellent buttonhole. The vintage buttonholer does not disappoint!!!
Janet, how do you make different sizes of button holes? Thank you for sharing!🙏
Thank you for the dart advice
You’re welcome 😊 Happy Sewing!!
Where do we get the purple pattern. Hope its not a pdf
You will find all the shirt patterns on www.islandersewing.com/shirts-modern-fit. Many are available as PDF but all come as paper patterns. Happy Sewing!!
How do I get my Craftsy classes from years ago of yours? I had so many that I no longer have access to even though it said I owned them😢. I loved your classes.
The Craftsy.com company has changed hands twice since its inception. The current owners have been operating Craftsy for several years now and I believe have worked out the bugs created by the previous company. They will have a record of your purchases and can help you reclaim the classes you purchased. Happy Sewing!! Janet
I've had a double mastectomy and do not wear protheses. Would I need to shorten the Jacket Express in front to make it hang even all around?
Maybe, You'll need to make a muslin of the back and front together to see how it hangs. Happy Sewing!!
Thank you, very inspiring!
You’re welcome 😊 I am so glad you feel inspired!
This has been fun! You’ve worked hard, Janet! As this Alberta clipper begins to blow through us, I’m seriously thinking about some of your warmest fabrics! Which would you recommend?!
I got myself a 401A and restore it!!!! Couldn't be happier to make buttonholes!!!! Thank you so much for all the info!!!!!
You’re welcome! Enjoy!
Boye made knitting needles but I don’t know what the product is Perhaps a stitch holder?
I wish I'd seen this a year ago when you made this vlog!
So happy to have found you❤😂
Welcome!
Hi, I would love to know how to hem a corduroy dress skirt. What width? Double turn?
Single turn a corduroy hem and 2" to 3" . Serge finish the edge or cover with binding so the hem is flat and smooth. Happy Sewing!!
I used these gadgets with the 4 nails. I used them to knit long cord.
That was really helpful. Thankyou.
You're welcome!
Hi. The spool with nails on is what we in Danish call a knitting doll. Used to come in the shape of a woman. It was used for knitting round cords.
Yep the four nails are to make I-cord
Question what about a bias skirt hem. Loved the video Watching from 🇨🇦. Wish the hemming sheet was on your web site so I could copy. During pricing shipping to canada
Any skirt/dress cut on the bias will need to hang on a hanger or preferably on a dress form for several days before hemming. Carefully measure and true up hem. I would use hem tape and blind hem by hand or machine. Hem should be 1 to 1 1/2" deep in most circumstances.. I am not sure about your shipping comment but we do ship to Canadian customers almost daily. We always look for the least expensive rates. Happy Sewing!! Janet
what kind of sewing machine is that?
The four nails in a wooden bobbin is called a Knitting Nancy. Commercially made they’re still available here in France.
The nails were used to hold the thread, like a loom, I used to watch my Great Grandma with one
Thank you. I earned about crimping! Excellent! ❤
Four nails ..making woollen cords ..
Question, I'm converting a curved hem to a straight around hem. Is there anything I need to do to make it hang perfectly?
This depends on the garment: If a women's garment, Straighten the hem by making it parallel to the grainline, but be aware it may not hang straight and may need tweaking when hemming. Keep in mind (as in the Jacket Express and the Islander Shirt the hems are curved in the Front but when worn hang straight. Happy Sewing!!
@IslanderSewingSystems thank you, I have the islander shirt pattern and a little book (from MANY years ago). I'll get it out and read...😉
not watching live, but felt compelled tocomment on the circular wire .....I believe it is the component of an old canning jar that attaches the glass lid. It could have been removed to make the glass top an easily lifted lid, not a flip lid.
I think the Boye item is a yarn keeper. You put your ball of yarn on it and you can knit away!
The metal ring with the clamp, you put the yarn ball on the ring, then the clamp connects to chatelain connected to your belt or pocket so you can knit as you're walking
Four nails in spools made cords. Like knitting icords
That ring is to a small plastic embroidery hoop I used to have. Oops, no, I didn’t see the little upper piece. After doing some research, I think it is to an embroidery hoop. Boye is a name associated with those.
Missed live but glad to see you now!
I have that exact machine, It was my mother's. I never used the buttonhole attachment - just the zigzag stitch. I will look for the buttonhole attachment
Thank you for adding a way to make adjustments without help. I often have no one to help!
Happy to help!
