Paragliding with Vultures in South Africa
Переглядів 42411 місяців тому
Taking to the skies with Cape Vultures in Aasvoëlberg, Zastron, South Africa. This is a magnificent site in the Free State, just south of the Lesotho border. This mountain has been inhabited by vultures for generations, as can be seen from the droppings caking the mountain in white. The opportunity to paraglide with them was offered to us by the generosity of the landowner, Koot Klopper who is ...

When is the best time to paragliding in America?😊
@@pat13487 it strongly depends on where you want to fly. If you want to fly in the desert sites, consider April or late September/October as summer can be too active. However for the standard flying, May to September seems to be best. All of the clips in this were from April, which I found was a really good general time to fly
Lovely dude
Wicked
Looks like an awesome adventure. Seems you got some nice weather, I wouldn't have thought of visiting that part of France for flying...
Thank you, it was a great week away. I agree, one doesn't think there would be much there compared to the alps etc, however it was surprising how much access there was to paragliding - and even on the non-flying days, the access to important history is a win!
was it allowed to fly there ? on which website did you check the weather conditions ? is there any "official" landing field ?
@@Jessydu47 i believe as long as you're not in restricted airspace in Norway, you're allowed to free fly. This isn't a site so there is no official field, however there are plenty of options, and generally speaking as long as a field doesn't have crops in it, you're fine to land as long as you respect the landowner
Nice one Tom...
A fun ride. I like the airplane ✈️ Boats, and Trains.🚂
Great video Tom. That looked like a fun trip. 👍
For a last minute choice it worked out great!
Awesome video. I have a lightweight wing and reversible harness (little bit taller (height) then yours though. Without the vacuum back it's roughly the same size. Glad that you mentioned that you haven't been stopped so far. Now I'm confident that I can take my bag with me as well! I just have to make the traps as tight as possible.
nice one. Definitely wearing a large winter coat so people can't see what's behind you is a really useful hack too
Do you still fly bluff
Yes, when I am in Durban. Aiming to be back from 5th to 21st of March 2024
Great video, one of the better ones I have seen so far. You give a good walkthrough (or flythrough?) of how and why you do things. I look like you are very low at some points, but you are able to stay up all the time. Not sure if it's possible, but are you able to show your flight through an app like FlySkyHigh? So then it's more clear how high you are and where you gain and lose altitude?
Nice guide Tom. I was lucky to fly at Map in November. Loved it.
Nice one, I hope you enjoyed all South Africa has to offer!
@@TomWatkeys Sure did Tom. I visited for three weeks and flew almost every day. Looking forward to coming back again soon.
Great video!
Thanks Faith, keen to catch up again in the UK!
Wonderful footage and a Big thumbs up to Koot Klopper. Hope he gets a tandem flight on his farm. Always special for the owner to have a different perspective of his property, looks like a special place.
Nice one Tom. I bet it wont be long before the tree-huggers and greenies are going to complain about pilots disturbing the vultures... lol ;)
Ace this mate 👍
Nicely done Tom - hope to try your route soon.
Awesome, please let me know how your flight goes, and if any of the info was super useful, or if I missed anything
Re-living this flight was the best X-mas prezzie🤟
Awesome footage bru!! Really epic!
TOM, who do I get in touch with to do a Tandem/ Intro flight. For my daughter
In Durban, you want to try WildSky Paragliding - they are based in Bulwer, but they have a satellite operation for the Bluff. Personally, I would make a weekend out of it and head up to Bulwer
Great landing tutorial 👌
Thank you for posting this, I find out this week if I’m moving to London and I was wondering how people got there gear across the city. Any chance you can make a video of how you pack up your rig to make it portable?
That's a great idea... For me personally, I use digital amp modelling, it saves on carrying! I'll make one next year when I finish building v2.1 of my setup
Flipping rockstars! Very cool to see
Nice Video edit. Can You please tell me where I can find that panning effect from 2:49 minute. Which editing software has that?
Thank you so much. Those are just some black boxes which I animate in - to change the aspect ratio - you can do it any software, this is an easy tutorial on it to make it easy ua-cam.com/video/1Z8AMZXi0Bw/v-deo.html
@@TomWatkeys Been trying to figure this out for ages 😅 Need to work out on those editing skills🤣
Awesome video man! Looking forward to creating some content with you guys!
Good tip, I have used those vacuum sealed bags on occasion, they work well. Just let the wing air out after you take it out of the bag and all is good.
Absolutely, a useful solution
Did you take off from Bakkanosi ? we plan a paragliding trip to Norway and I'm hesitating to add this destination to our itinerary, the place looks gorgeous but adding a 7 hours hike on top of all the other ones we'll be doing... I need to be sure, thanks
Hey there. If I remember correctly, the trail i took was called Rimstigen. You can park up at the end of the road - it's about a 2.5 hour hike up to a beautiful glacial lake - from there you keep following painted markers through a boulder field, which will bring you up on top of the takeoff. Parking marker for you at these co-ordinates 60.92036395875861, 6.867186286975617 This was my takeoff pin - the hill here is very conical, so you can takeoff with a crosswind no problem (as I did) 60.92848412680295, 6.831788703097284 It's a really beautiful fjord - if I went again, I would camp at one of the campsites right by the parking for a night or two, this would give you a bit more leeway with conditions - I got quite lucky that it was perfect when I arrived on takeoff. I'd also suggest doing a landing zone reconnaissance before hiking up - I don't think where I landed is the best spot, and there were lots of other options - I didn't do a proper reconnaissance hence why I ended up changing landings late - I'm quite sure that was someone's personal property, there are lots of grassy fields around which would be much easier and more suitable with a wind direction
Also to add, if you stay in that Fjord, there are some awesome SUP/kayak tours, I don''t think you'll have a more "pure" fjord experience than staying at one of those campsites
Loving this... Can't wait to hit all of these spots as I progress; about to start my paragliding courses at Torrey Pines!
Amazing man! I'd highly recommend once you have the license, going straight up to Monterey - there's a lady instructor who works there on the dunes. It's a lot more forgiving than Torey, and MUCH easier to walk up if you bottom land. It's a really good place to build you confidence and ground handling, I'd strongly recommend it as a first stop. Santa Barbara mountain sites could be a bit intimidating for your early flying, and the recovery there is quite tricky, so you'd be looking at 1/2 flights a day - whereas Monterey and Mussel Rock are far more friendly and recovery is smooth sailing. You can contact Cyn on instagram - Raven Wolf Sky Sports - instagram.com/ravenwolfskysports/ for Monterey, Tell her you're buddies with the South African, Tom, and she'll look after you
@@TomWatkeys Thank you so much for the insight! Seriously that's awesome. Maybe come late summer as I have my P2 I'll have to give that a go. I'll check back in!
@@wyatt.photos Awesome sauce - keen to see you in the air my dude
It's amazing what you can fit into 2.5 minutes! What a wonderful holiday trip. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much Barry! There was still a load of things I had to leave out because I aimed for 2.5. What a great time it was
Sweet edit dude!
Thanks so much Matt!
This is ridiculous! I'm thinking of taking a course and starting paragliding, but then again I keep thinking... Which one is safer/more dangerous Tom, driving a car or paragliding? Considering all possible situations in both scenarios.
Hey that's awesome to hear! For me, paragliding is as safe as you make it. For instance, I fly SAFE rated wings (EN-A/EN-B) in SAFE conditions, usually always with a reserve, and I have made sure to progress slowly, as well as doing an SIV course. This is the equivalent to only ever driving a Volvo, in daylight, on tar roads, not speeding and doing an advanced drivers course. Of course there is still a risk, but everyday some people get in their unroadworthy cars, speed to their destination, in the rain at nighttime.... I'd say my flying margins are safer than their driving margins
@@TomWatkeys Nicely put! Thanks for the response.
Hi Tom Cheers for the video and detailed description! Thinking about flying this Saturday. The wind is south easterly at 11:00 to 12 miles per hour, with gusts 14 maximum. On paper it makes sense to take off on the opposite face you were on here, heading towards bowmansted so into wind.. mid B wing with trim speed of 38 km/h.. so would be carrying a ground speed of 10 km an hour at worst.. Not flown here before, confident that it's doable.. do you have any advice or critiques for this plan. Many thanks
Hi there. The other side has a much steeper takeoff, I would suggest an anchor (at those wind speeds) and do your pullup quite far back so there is a little bit of rotor to take the edge off the speed, once you're airborne that will be a lovely flight.
Massively useful content. Thanks!
hats how you spend a Friday! Is this Bluff or North Coast?
This is the bluff, north coast is a lot harder to find spots on
Only seeing this now bru.. Sweet video. Missing the mellow wilderness flying so much!
Always a pleasure being there hey

awesome guys, stay safe!
Tom very informative and great insight. Used a ekit for many gig my only hiccup is if the whole band is not running in ears as the drummer u come into some challenges scenario. 1. If other bands members are still using amps / acoustic gtr still using wedges and bass Amp next to you on a ekit you struggle with dynamics and also keeping up to stage volume even on smaller gigs... So would also need bring a wedge and would struggle in dynamic parts of songs of needed eg the ekit to have more volume with other members.. I totally agree with u on this but in sense the whole band needs be running ears ect to make this work to its full extent
Thanks Raz-L. Yeah stage volume is a tough one - I would suggest that at the very least you try and run in ears as the drummer in this scenario - that way you can have you own mix where you can have your drums nice and loud in your ears so you can at least match your own dynamics to everyone else's. I've even played gigs where I plug my in ears straight into the "Headphone out" of the module and then just leave them a little loose in my ears to hear the other instruments. I do understand that on stage, other muso's struggle to hear the ekit over their already loud amps - but again that's kind of the point of this - their amps are probably already too loud for the stage. The foldback (monitoring) should at least be able to push the drums to a level where they match the guitar amps, if they can't then either (a) The foldback is underpowered or (b) the guitar amps are too loud, both of these scenarios are already undesirable as in (a) the singer won't ever be able to hear themselves and (b) you run into complication with FOH sound from amps being too loud. I'll be doing a video this week hopefully on running in ears for a full band and what that entails - pro's, cons, technical requirements etc....
Simply beautiful! :)
Thank you!
What an epic rendition :)
look forwrd to that
