Loving your channel, can’t wait until you invest in a new mic 😅
Falling into mediocrity, best album of '97!
I actually LOVE Hollow Years!
You could argue they haven't been as accessible or as "good" since FII, depending on how you feel about JR and Scenes- I'd rather listen to FII, I think if I authored one or the other I'd pick Scenes (MP made a stink at me about this.. lol)
worst album of dt by far
Awake had always been my favourite, but FII is still a go-to
oh man, I was enjoying your video until 11:22 and it made me stop
If you can't handle an opinion then that's fine by me
@@quagsiremetalhead1401 Please listen to what you said after the timestamp. Isn't it bias? lol
@@webmaster200 no, I just don't like the astonishing
At the time, in the mid 90's, I was not prepared to get into progressive music AT ALL. I had heard parts of Awake and really felt like the band was too full of themselves and needed to get to the point with their songwriting. The first time I heard Falling Into Infinity, I instantly fell in love with the band's musicianship. I loved this album so much, I remember burning up the amplifier on my home stereo system. It was the first album in my life that I couldn't turn up loud enough. It CHANGED me. And ultimately it prepared me for what came next. When Scenes From A Memory was released, I loved it more than anything I had ever heard. I was completely obsessed with it for months. I then listened to their previous albums and found myself much more welcoming to their long progressive jam style. People can say why they want about FIT, but if it wasn't for that album, I never would have been drawn into the DT world. They remained my favorite band up until Portnoy left. Now that he's back, I can't wait to hear what they come up with!
I love this album.
I was initially disappointed with this album after buying it as a new release, and when I had to purge a portion of my collection in 2004, it was one I wasn’t sad to let go. Having come back to it in recent years after buying the vinyl reissue, I was struck by how many of the songs I still remembered, and how much I liked it. It must have connected with me far more than I realized. I have since reacquired a CD copy, and I think of it fondly. I actually quite like the whole album, even the more overtly radio-friendly stuff. It was a different side of the band that was nice to hear, and at times I wish they would flex a bit of that muscle these days, as sometimes their stuff can feel like they’re just showing off for the sake of it, rather than writing songs meant to stay with you.
"Illegal alien is racist" oh shut up, Mr. Cringe.
I love all these 90s DT albums had totally diferent aproaches. There was always something outrageous. Love hollow years :) Sheridian was seriously dick moved and the band moved into faster and faster and more and more technical as the songs got more and more unmemorable for me.
You shouldve put rotten in lonliness by blade and bath in this list
I haven't heard of that one, what genre is it?
@@quagsiremetalhead1401 prog rock and depressive suicidal black metal, there one of the biggest bands in the dsbm scene but split in 2011 after the lead guitarist died of an overdose. Also the moment you hear the music you will understand the meaning of the band name, so go check their stuff out.
@@quagsiremetalhead1401 prog rock and dsbm, listen to there stuff and make a vid on them.
@@colecarstarphen8743 I'm not really into DSBM and i'm not gonna make a video on a band I have just gotten into even if I were to end up liking them
@@quagsiremetalhead1401 fair enough but listen to them anyway
Lifelover passes the tests as long as you consider dekadens an album instead of an ep (because it is) Also you should do a vid on lifelover cuz they deserve more attention
I've never heard of Lifelover, what genre are they?
I sure would have liked to heard what a DT album would have sounded like with Kevin Gilbert producing and on the board.
11:20 wow u serious ?
Yeah I really hate that album
Holy hell this channel is off to a great start, I love it wen I find something like this early on. Your channel is going to explode, & rightfully so.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
I love this record! Definitely not as cool as the first 3 but better than most that came out that year.
you do realise Mike Portnoy doesn't write the music? He did write lyrics, drumparts and has arrangement credits.
Yes, but i should have made it more clear
He's the structure GOAT
Him and Hannes which is funny cos they're both drummers
I never like You Not Me" and always skip
I've been a DT fan, since Awake came out. I get the criticism for Falling Into Infinity, but I really enjoy this album, for what it is.
I do quite like this record and vastly prefer it to any of the work with Jordan Rudess. It's inconsistent, but man, "Trial of Tears," "New Millenium," and "Lines in the Sand" are some of the best DT tracks and they never really captured that again. Once Rudess entered, the quality of songwriting diminished.
If it wasn't a Dream Theater album, it would have been received a lot better
I really love this album, I dont understand why it features at the bottom of most tier rankings
I remember when the album came out. It had some nice songs, but overall it was a weird, inauthentic album. Throughout, the band seemed as if they were playing with the handbrake on. It wasn't the same Dream Theater that recorded the brilliant debut album and Images and Words. Had they continued down this path, they would have met the same fate as Queensryche. Fans notice when their heroes lose their musical soul and their hearts are no longer in it.
Awake is their best album.
Hells kitchen... incredible peice
Falling into Infinity is definitely one of the most obscure albums for me. I have every album and it's probably one I have listened to the least amount of times at least from start to finish. It's got some classics and I really like the musicianship and contributions from Sherinian. Yeah the record companies are a total nightmare. This was the worst time for the band but great things came out of it for the next album and going forward. I love everything Dream Theater personally. No need to rip on The Astonishing as it's one of my favorite albums from anyone.
4:32 NIGHTMARE CINEMA I wish they did this more often. LOL
Yep, was just going to comment about MP looking really awkward on the kit and then realized it was JP. Was lucky enough to see Nightmare Cinema in concert on that tour.
If I am right wasn't A Change Of Seasons originally Metropolis part ll? Also I have always thought of Burning My Soul as Pull Me Under part 2, not sure why, but maybe because both songs were dark.
Nah a change of seasons was a different song
Very underrated album, cause this one its AMAZING!!! One of my favorites
I love the album. Derek Sherinian's work is brilliant on that album
Awake and Falling into Infinity where some of their best work.
In Phoenix, KUPD played songs from this album everyday when it came out. I swear You Not Me was played multiple times a day. I bought it when it released. Saw them in Phx on this tour and it was great. Peruvian Skies, Hollow Years, Burning My Soul, Lines in the Sand I believe they played live and they were all great. And I will say that with Derek just seemed to bring some energy to the live shows. He's a pretty funny guy.
Falling into Infinity is unlistenable
not sure i'd say that
This comment is unlistenable
For me, DT’s best album. Their most mature endeavour, but the fans prefer more technical stuff.
Mehhh... imo nothing they did after awake ever really clicked with me. Awake was one of those albums that just really can't be topped, with only images and words standing neck and neck. I've tried and tried to listen to falling into infinity, but it only ever hit in a few spots, and was never the cohesive experience that came before ... then when Jordan rudess came on board, they just got way too wanky. Derek was probably the only guy who could properly and tastefully fill Kevin Moores spot.
I lost interest in Dream theater after octavarium. I started listening to them when Images and words released. I really like everything pre octavarium a lot. I like Falling into Infinity, it has some great tracks. Unfortunately I wasn't able to see them for and Images and words or Awake tours (I really wish I could have seen them at the marquee). However, I have been to the falling into infinity, Scenes from a memory (at rock city Nottingham with spocks bears supporting - my favourite gig ever), six degrees, and train of thought, all were very good. No one can churn out quality forever but they had a good run.
I bought this album right after watching Budokan DVD which contained awesome renditions from FII. If you take out the more radio oriented songs, it’s a great flagship DT album. New Millennium, Hell’s Kitchen/Lines in the Sand, Just let me breathe, burning my soul, Peruvian skies and trial of tears. All undoubtedly killer tracks that to me is on par with Awake’s best moments
Europe is my favorite band. I love all their work especially the albums they’ve released since reforming. “Wings of Tomorrow” is a kick@$$ Metal album. It has inspired so many European bands and always gets listed by Nordic metal bands as a favorite. They never made the same album twice and this album is an example of this. It’s a great album to crank on vinyl and an even better album to blast while driving. Great job with this video. 😊
Thanks so much!
My favorite DT album is awake and my favorite song is “A change of seasons.” I loved this album the first time I heard it and I still do today. I’m a fan of all their work but I really love the classic rock elements of this release. I believe Derek brought in a more Kansas/Deep Purple vibe. Plus let us not forget Doug Pinnicks vocals on Lines in the Sand. To me that’s one of the best tracks on the album. That should have been a radio hit.
In my notes I was gonna write a joke about those being doug pinnick but forgot to put it in the final script
Would be interested in a video comparing the Mangini years to Portnoy years (and expectations for the years to come).
Great album!
All the songs on the album were written by the band as a whole. Songs are not attributable to individual members of the band, like you keep suggesting. Lyrics are written individually but the music is always a band effort.
So much killer, too much filler. It has some of their best AND worst songs Also, it set events in motion that would be Metroplis Pt2 through to Systematic Chaos. which is a damn good run.
Completely agree. But I like even the worst songs. That's why Dream Theater is one of the bands I have every album from. Systematic Chaos is very overlooked btw. What a solid album!
Gentle Giant made it the best way possible: they disbanded in the middle of 1980.
I didn't talk about Gentle Giant mostly because of that, I am getting into Gentle Giant though so I may make a sole video on them in the future
@@quagsiremetalhead1401 Thank you!
Moore 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Sherinian 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Rudess 👍🏻
Sepultura
My favorite eighties prog-rock bands I almost like better than in the seventies, including Genesis and the Moody Blues. There was a little something missing from Floyd's 80s work (compared to the 70s), but there was still no band who was doing what they were doing. Alan Parsons was still strong in the first half of the 80s, too. Jethro Tull and ELP, not so much.
Good analysis and I learned a few things. FII is a very good album with a few weak tracks. For example, You Not Me and Burning My Soul have some alternate demos that were much better. But several of the tracks they cut to keep this a single disc are not on the level with what made the album. So I think the label was right in some regards. I was fortunate to see them on this tour and the band was in top form at the time. Sherinian was great and should have been retained. I always thought it was more of a personality clash issue but it sounds like Sherinian wanted to be in the band and they dropped him for more of a technician in Rudess. Too bad in my opinion.
