This is BS. Cars can be made to hit up 300mph (high 200s). The Challenger SRT has like 800HP. Maintaining 70mph on the highway requires no more than 40-50hp. Limiting power is just silly. Going up steep hills at 28mph requires a lot of power. Kilowatts of power. Frankly, I think 28 is too slow. Lots of hills in my city and you can easily hit 35mph on these hills on a regular pedal-cycle with no motor. 35mph is a much more reasonable maximum speed. Enforce the speed laws. Small city streets have a 25mph speed limit in my city. If someone is speeding on an e-bike, write them a ticket. If they are going through lights, write them a ticket. I just saw a video of the police pulling out a mobile dyno and testing bikes they pulled over. This is outrageous.

The real problem is that we elect stupid or corrupt people, and they write the laws. There will always be people on the public roads that are dangerous to themselves and others. The trafic laws are meant to regulate adequate speed and behaviour. Some stupid people decided the law must limit the vehicle instead of the operator. By their logic, all the cars should be illegal because all of them can go faster than speed limits. Ebikes now, are illegal to go as fast as I can pedal a plain bicycle. The legislator got outside of his responsibility, which is to regulate the quality and operational safety of products.

I knew once the kids got involved that would be the beginning of regulations.A 12 year old is to young for an ebike. I definitely attribute riding a bike all over to helping me grow as strong as i did.

Good information. The problem that I have with the new laws is that they are putting everyone in the same class where it is clear that the matters of concern are age related and should apply to riders, say under the age of 18. The new rules make no since for the adult population. It's like saying, "Since the speed limit is 55 mph, cars are limited to 10 horsepower". Or, "We ban the breeding of pit bulls because they are involved in most dog attacks." In other words, ebike riders are being condemned without even breaking the law! Laws should be enforced when they are broken. But in this day and time, that's not even being done, so why pick on ebikes.

When I was a 12-year-old kid, if a cop caught us riding a motorized bike (electric wasn't even an option in the 60s 😀) they'd have taken it from us and we'd never see it again. These kids today don't know how lucky they are. We also had to walk uphill (both ways) in the snow to school. 😉

This was definitely brought on by irresponsible riding on electric two-wheelers that clearly exceed the class 1, 2, 3 ebike descriptions, and now impact all ebike users and brands. Specific legal restrictions were facilitated by some vagueness in the class 3 definition. I would have liked it to be like class 2, but pedal assist can extend to 28mph (25mph in places where it is the posted limit for all motor vehicles). It doesn’t make sense to me a throttle for a higher class is gimped well below the 20mph limit for a lower class, but at least 3.7mph is enough to get a rider started from a stop. You just can’t use it to help climb hills or tow cargo at a useful speed, which is a major bummer. Too many brands have been offering models that are clearly going to be used as a moped, sit-on scooter or light motorcycle (as they have short cranks, usually a single gear on a heavy bike), but (wink, wink), they sell and ship it as a class 2 ebike, just with an “off-road” or “unrestricted” mode that is easily accessed and typically used. One can get a useful ebike that stays within the class 1, 2, 3 system, peak at 750W, and climb hills well, just not at 20+ mph. Look for the right mix of gearing, wheel size, weight and torque efficiency of the motor. I’ve seen hub motors that deliver 35-120Nm of torque. Torque is what you need to overcome the slope of a hill. Torque is what you need for acceleration. Here are some examples of motors that deliver similar torque but at quite different peak wattages: Hub motors: Radster Road/Trail: 100Nm @ 750W Lectric M24 used in XPedition, XPeak,: 85Nm @ 1410W Ride1Up Rift: 95Nm @ ~1200W Ride1Up LMT’d with MXUS: 100Nm @ ~900W Mid-drive motors: Ananda mid-drive: 120Nm @ 450W Brose Sprinter TF: 90Nm @ ~400W Bosch Cargo Line: 90Nm @ ~400W Bosch older commuter model (can’t recall name): 40Nm @ 300-350W Bafang (multiple models) 100-120Nm @ 1000-1500W Note power ratings typically are what is fed to the motor, not what it puts out. You should be interested in how efficient the entire drivetrain is, including the motor. You can buy quite different levels of efficiency and performance for the same advertised power consumption. Lots of brands use cheaper, less efficient components. You should get the best value for your money, so look into the output specs for the given power input of any model you’re interested in.

That’s it, I’m suing all car/truck/boat/airplane, etc., manufacturers because they can go over the legal limit. I hope that this lawsuit opens the floodgates on what can do & be classified as what. 🍿

Florida was the first to put a total ban of all e-bikes back in June of 2024 in Biscayan bay Florida after that kid ran into the elderly woman and killed her. After other states started implementing their own laws starting in 2025. Florida was the first to screw it up for all states.

4:08 Actually, you are incorrect about the what the law says. Nowhere does it say manufactures cannot sell non-compliant (class 1-3) e-bikes. It says they are not considered e-bikes and therefore, manufacturers cannot advertise, label them or sell them as compliant e-bikes. As long they do not call themselves an “e-bike,” they can sell them all day long in California.

The super 73 ruined it for legitimate e-bike riders , the law should have only been for the super 73 because it’s not an e-bike.

I belong to a RC airplane club. Irresponsible people have caused a lot of problems for the people who fly within the FAA regulations. All you ever hear about is the ones who don't follow the rules. Ebkes are lucky, the FAA doesn't apply to them.

How about electric scooters? I’m not against them but surprised they were ever allowed on the roads.

People will end up just going to sources available to DIY a bike. Like buying a Citizen Cycle front hub kit. Then is it on the bike company? Is it on Citizen Cycle? The home DIY person? The parts manufacturer? Like a back alleyway abortion clinic.. Even more unsafe than the real thing.

On the other side, the public is outraged by John Deer controlling their tractor products . Farmers and general tractor repair facilities are locked out of the ability to tamper with John Deer equipment. It is costing huge amounts of time and money for Farmers not able to get repairs done unless they go to John Deer dealerships. John Deer will not share repair technology with the public.

Also not sure how something that is changed after the consumer takes possession is relevant. Every single Jeep out there is sold road legal, you can also go on their website (among others) and buy parts to make them road illegal (very easy to do in Maryland). So is that the fault of Jeep or the person who modded the vehicle with a for off road use only suspension?
