HOW???? am i missing something? or do u just have a really chill ghost in ur house
This is an old 'player piano' the paper roll in the middle has holes punched in it, and when the air escapes it hits the piano note. Yea in the 1800s they made pianos that played themselves and ran on air. Here is one of my videos where you can see the inside. ua-cam.com/video/h_n36sXL9GU/v-deo.htmlsi=TCrmb9xG-0T2foBj
Didn’t know these types of pianos are still alive.
@@Theprobot1234 Alive and kicking. I was shocked to learn they run off AIR! Hope you check out some of my other videos. Thanks for commenting.
@ I heard these pianos are old. I didn’t think to many of them were made.
@@Theprobot1234 they started being made in the early 1800s and stopped in the early 1990s, so there are tons of them out there. Infact you can find them almost free because they are so hard to move and usally need lots of work. This one is from 1988!
@ oh. I thought there were made and stopped in the 1800s the more you know
That’s cool
@NRperfect_ thanks. I have a few videos of it opened up so you can see inside. Hope you check it out.
Hey thanks for commenting. I think its a 1988...at least sep 1988 is the date handwritten on the keyboard
What year is your piano? Sounds great!
Most people underestimate the power of these aeolians! You just gotta take care of them! (Not saying you underestimated it btw😅) both this one and mine are in almost perfect playing condition!
@ Speaking of Aeolians…. I now have an Aeolian Orchestrelle Player Reed Organ! I showed it briefly in one of my streams. It was half built about 10 years ago, and I’m starting on it after the 1960s player I have, which can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. The pianos Aeolian made are pretty decent, the only thing I’m not too hot on is using sponge in the valves. Most of the time it falls apart and dries out. But like you said, if you take care of them they play well! As yours and the one in the video do.
@ woah!!!! Lucky… those things are very neat. Do you have any rolls it can play?
@lukesvintagetrains5495 It plays Aeolian Grand 58 note rolls. I only have 7 but I’m trying to find more.
I just gave a few of thosw to the piano tuner!
Love all the little flourishes in this. Props to the composer
@@nickalasmontano1496 J. Lawrence Cook is estimated to have made around 20,000 recordings. He was hired by QRS in 1923, so this roll had to be made some time before then.
The piano's hungover....
Regulator off??
Im not sure what you mean by Regulator. If you are refering to the dampener that gives it a more tin like sound, then yes, that was off for this.
@@SimplyAPiano Sorry, tempo governor. Pneumatic regulation. Term was lost. Not trying to be an armchair critic but I had an ampico b that I loved dearly. I realize this is not that but I just notice it's choppy.
@@dmsheckler yea I have wondered what has been making it choppy. I find it seems to run so much smoother when I do the foot pedels.
Love it!! If Gershwin cut the roll for the song, we are listening to a man who died in 1938 actually playing the song!
Looks like a new-er ish qrs roll, and it definitely is a classical piece of some sort
A classic! :)
@@Ozro-Burnham-Briseno but can you listen to it without singing it?
@@SimplyAPiano I don't know... Only a feat for the strong.
Awesome ❤
Is this a tired Pianola version of "Roll Em Pete"? It sounds like. Look up Neville Dickie's version of it on a a 1970's Boogie Woogie Record. and see the energy and the right speed with a drummer too. Very energetic and right.
Hmm... Thank you for demonstrating your gorgeous machine, but if I had to say, this piano roll in particular has no swing. Even if I speed it up.
Tempo is too slow
I agree Pinetop was one of the Boogie Woogie greats
If that was the lyrics scrolling down on the right, then you could self accompany singing along with the machine. Peggy Lee is still my favourite performer, but this just moved into 2nd place.
Have Paul and Ringo showed up at your house yet? 😅
I wish
Who rebulit your piano? Just curious.
I dont know if it was rebuilt. We got it this way.
Why so slow?
The tempo said 50... Im completly unfamilure with the song though... should I do it faster?
@@SimplyAPiano Not sure where that tempo indication came from, but no concert pianist plays it that slowly.

I tried to link a good one for you to hear, but it seems it didn’t work. Check out the live performance by Rafael Blechaz (I may have misspelled his name).
That's a fairly new roll by the looks of the paper, could be a Play-Rite or something like that.
Got lucky with that piano! It plays well and sounds decent, a lot of these small 1960s players didn't!
The hand writen date (If I remeber correctly) on it is 1983. I will have to take a photo next time I take it apart for cleaning. But I want to say September 1983...
@@SimplyAPiano Oh so it's a very late one! Nice!
It was written in 1960 by Bent Fabricius Bjerre as a signature melody for a TV show. It was named, as was the show, "Omkring et flygel". (Around a grand piano). Atco Records in USA didn't like the name, so it was renamed Alley Cat, and in 1963 happened to win a Grammy for best Rock'n Roll record.
Thats awesome!
Is your piano electric or crank? I am just fascinated with how they work!
They run on vacume. Luckily for me this one has an electric vacume hooked to it. But before that there were pedals on the bottom that you pushed to build vacume pressure.
@@SimplyAPiano That is so cool! Thank you!
@@jimwile9313 i have some other videos where I show the moving parts as it plays. Its amazing to think this is how they did it in the time before electricity. George Gershwin actually 'recorded' himself playing his songs on a player piano. In the 90s they released the recordings on CD. That lead to my intrest in player pianos, but I never had the chamce to get one until now. I actually have a Gershwin roll, played by him now I just need to get it recorded and uploaded.
@@SimplyAPiano Fantastic! I will look for the videos!
👏👏👏👏👏
Great Sounding Piano 😊
Agreed
Thank you for watching.
1:10: Random dust ball goes cruising right through the frame xD
I've tried to learn this tune, it's deceptively hard. Pauline Alpert made a spectacular roll of this one for Duo-Art, one of the most beautiful rolls out there.
There's an old Aeolian Sting or Cabaret sitting at the Burlington airport in Vermont, it's really funny how this piano sounds almost exactly like that one except yours is in tune and in good playing condition unlike the one at the airport. These little Aeolian players have a very Baldwinesque tone.
One of the finest arrangements of this tune I'd say, it's really imaginative though the ending I always thought was weirdly made. The second repeat of the first strain is just straight up awesome!
A great tune played with style, verve and much adornment.
Great song By Fabricus Or Bent Fabric😊
Thank you for watching and commenting. This was my first time hearing it. My piano tuner left me a bunch of new rolls I never heard before. As a result I should have a video coming out every week for the foreseable future.
Schwarzer Kater Stanislaus.

@@SimplyAPiano This was the name of the German original version. Black Cat Stanislaus
Das ist Toll. Pardon my beginer Deutsche
Just love the sound of these older uprights. They just have a "voice" of their own. Especially the players.
Agreed. This one also has a (I dont know the actual term) dampener. When turned on it gives the piano a quietier and tinny sound. It really makes me thing 'old wild west saloon'. I will have to do some recordings of that and show everyone.
Relatable; gives off "It's Just a Burning Memory" vibes...
Not just mine...seems to slow down as the take-up spool gets heavier...???
That's strange that it would slow down and not speed up!
@@PiotrBarcz indeed...
This is Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is more commonly known by the German nickname "Mondscheinsonate", Moonlight Sonata in English.
Danke!
Sounds Like Beethoven 😊
Moonlight Sonata😊
I Think I Am Wrong😮
@@anthonygiglio9860 Nay, you are correct.
Excellent tune. 🎵🎶
I don't know why people keep on misspelling Medley as Melody, this is Scott Joplin Medley No. 2 arranged by J. Lawrence Cook
Good to know. Thanks for the correction I wouldnt have known anything about it if it werent for the post it not already on it.
@@SimplyAPiano Glad I could help :)
Nice but just need to up the tempo a little bit more!🧐
You are absolutly right. I am still fine tunning the process, but I will have to re-record this one
This brings back some very fond memories of my Great Aunt that had a pianola and a huge collection of piano rolls stacked to the 10' ceiling. As a kid I'd sit on that pianola all day just playing all the rolls. I don't think I came close to playing them all. I never found out what happened to the pianola after she passed, I would have loved to inherit that.
Thats a great story, and exactly the kind of happy memories I am hoping to envoke with this channel. I have a more modest collection of rolls, but plan on expanding out. My goal is to put up one or two rolls a week.
C minor
Doh! Your right. I will change that now. Thank you so much for catching that.
This is like a 20th century form of MIDI; very cool
Right? I have a bunch more I need to record and upload.... but I wasnt sure if zoom in on just the roll, or zoom out showing the piano keys is best. What do you think?
@@SimplyAPiano I'd prefer zoomed out, it can give a better perspective of what you're working with
@@sqrt2gmr next one I am doing is Beethovens 5th, zoomed out. Let me know what you think.
