You got the aesthetic bro wow
Try using Sunshine/moonlight instead of parsec? maybe worth a shot!
cool
wow i thought u just gave up i just checked your channel yesterday :)
Nah, life got in the way and focused more on working on it than posting updates for a while. It's been a rough year
@@asatiirstales glad you could work on stuff on your rough year :)
@@asatiirstales still using linux?
@@richmondrobinson3259 yeah why
In my opinion, the best distro for those coming from Windows and Mac, I recommend trying: Big Linux, a Brazilian distro based on Manjaro and Arch, very friendly and simple to use, with everything you need. Their support is amazing!
i think this is a good video but based on the distros you mentioned i wonder if you have used KDE
Not a fan, I much prefer GNOME
I first tried Linux (OpenSUSE) some 20 years back, but back then, at least to someone like me that was used to graphical user interfaces, it was a mess. KDE and Gnome apps required their own respective environment, sound was also very much divided into separate camps. Compiz was amazing though and the reason why I was convinced that Linux could become great one day. Seeing Compiz like 10 years after Jurassic Park came out was a big deal. If anyone remembers, there's a few "UNIX" scenes in that movie that has a graphical user interface where you sort of fly around in a 3D environment to make it look more sci-fi and cool I guess. Anyway, knowing that Windows 10 is getting its life support cut in late 2025 made me realize I had to prepare for the jump, so I began looking for my distro late 2023, but already by mid January this year I decided to just install MX Linux. And it's been fine. The only problems I've had has been sound related really, like how Discord can't capture sound from other applications, which is important when I want to play adventure games with my friends and I'm hosting, so every 3 weeks or so I have to dual boot back into windows 10 (for now). I ought to get that figured out in 1½ years time 😅
I've really tried. I want it to work for me. But as hobbyist game dev, it just doesn't. So many things "just work" under windows, changing my audio workflow to use ardour is a pain and I seem to spend more time fiddling with things than working on actual projects. I use linux professionally, I'm great in the terminal, it's not like I've not put the work into learning it. I just feel that as much as it is objectively a better operating system, it's not the best operating system for game dev.
Welcom to Linux
Cool
omg ur aliv
YES, I AM!!
👍
What game engine are you using for your game?
RPG Maker MV with a 3D plugin called MV3D, it's great
Windows me was the best version of windows I ever used... It also drove me to Linux instead of switching to XP like most did. So been using Linux for 20 off years now. Welcome to the free world.
I am using Linux for 20 years, sometimes exclusive and other times next to Windows. Being a huge fan of VR myself, keeping Windows around at least for that factor alone seems crucial. What I really hate about Linux is its arrogant and unwelcoming community which expects you to have some experience and knowledge of what you are doing. Certainly less of an issue in more recent years but still a massive problem when asking for help. Started through with Knoppix, later Ubuntu, Debian and Kubuntu, nowadays I am on openSuSE Tumbleweed which is amazing for being a rolling release like Arch (a distro I consider as a learning tool more so than a desktop system) paired with the comfort of Ubuntu. And of course, my SteamDeck runs SteamOS. When it comes to Windows tho, I stick with Windows 10 Pro because I still fail to see any valid reason to upgrade.
Been using Linux since 9 years, from that 7 years on Manjaro (the same install).
with ubuntu studio (it has plasma desktop gui) i have great charging settings like only charge hen its below a % of the battery load
if you want to use manjaro, i would recommend something like endeavouros over it if you really want an arch-based distro. the manjaro packages are usually a few weeks behind arch linux's packages which can break a lot of stuff on the AUR (arch user repo, packages that user's have made). and there's various other reasons that i'm not so knowledgeable about. endeavour os is basically arch but with a graphical installer and it also automatically installs a desktop environment and nice applications for you. and afaik it uses arch packages so it won't fall behind and cause issues with the AUR if you really want a stable system that won't break ever for no reason, just use an debian/ubuntu-based distro. arch is notorious for sometimes just breaking since it's a bleeding-edge distro, so as soon as a new package version is released you can update to it instead of distros like debian and ubuntu which don't change often so that stuff can be thoroughly tested. for example, glibc updated on arch once that completely broke EAC so you couldn't play any games that used it. so if you don't want stuff to break randomly, which isn't super common but will probably happen to you, don't use arch.
It's fun to compare your experiences, which are relatively positive, to those of other people like Linus from LTT: You wanted something something that fit your usecase and were willing to configure it for that, they wanted something that would work mostly out of the box with some minor tweaks, more of a gameconsole than a work PC (which was clearly stated by them). And that's why your experiences were so different, Linux allows you to make it (mostly) fit your needs, but the OOTB experience for games/windows software is subpar. Glad to hear it's working for you!
I've had negative experiences with Linux in the past, but it was mostly my lack of experience with computers and not being very fond of Ubuntu as a system. A lot of what linus went through is very relatable to me back then, but I found where I am most comfortable elsewhere And thank you!
Do you still use Pop or just Fedora now? Also did you tried to install VM Windows on Linux?
I'm completely on Fedora now (or at least on my desktops and laptops), I have tried windows on virtual machine yes
You made me curious about what Scrivener is/was so I (and I am using Fedora 36 as my daily driver) checked it out. You can, or at least I did on F36, get Scrivener installed and running...but it requires (at least for me) using WineTricks to setup a 32-bit "wine prefix". Scrivener is listed as Gold in the Wine HQ appdb. Once I installed the pre-reqs (again, shown at the Wine HQ appdb page for Scrivener) and used WineTricks to use the correct wine prefix, I was able to install Scrivener 3.0.1 (as that was the latest tested at Wine HQ appdb). When i first ran Scrivener it notified me there was an update available and it downloaded and installed/updated itself. I was able to create a Blank document. Just mentioning this in case you'd prefer it - although this certainly was not an intuitive install.
Scrivener is in the AUR and there are free and open source alternatives for Scapple.
I'm currently going through Obsidian, it has its own mind map thing, it's neat
Idk about gnome boxes, but i use Qemu+ VirtManager it is much better then VirtualBox or VMware Player... learning it is not easy but when you do it is great VM solution. I have bunch of Linux, Windows (10/11) and OS X running in it just fine. (Only hard time i had with it was setting bridged network so VMs are visible in my network as separate IPs)
So about Manjaro… yeah they customize quite a lot. For some reason I had nothing but problems with it. For anyone new trying Linux and thinking about moving to Arch based distro that's easy to install and does not change that much from a mainline Arch, I'd highly recommend EndeavourOS
I would suggest against Manjaro (or Garuda), as it comes with a few fundamental issues that can mess up usability and lead to the install breaking. The main issue is how they handle packages in a delayed manner while not delaying kernel updates, which causes problems. Most the time I see a kernel panic issue, Manjaro is the distro in question. If any distro is being recommended as "Arch with an installer", it should be EndeavourOS which is basically just that. Manjaro and Garuda notably come with package helper software, but the issue with relying on a pacman helper is that it can be set up badly for long-term exclusive usage, especially in Garuda's case where they had an issue that forced updates, but no mirror syncing, every time you would install software. Leading the Garuda experience to be very frustrating for new users past a few weeks. The only starter distro I can recommend is LMDE.
I addressed my problems with Manjaro in my other videos, I'm now on Fedora for quite some time
I've tried many popular distros and Manjaro KDE is the one that was able to make me quit Windows. I'm on MX Linux KDE now though which is Debian-based and I'm liking it even more! 👍
What text editor is in the beginning of the vid?
iA Writer, sadly not available on Linux. I mostly use it for writing my video's scripts
I just moved from Win7 to Manjaro not too long ago. Had a couple small hiccups getting setup, but everything is generally very smooth now.
"far too much bloat", I see you have taken to the community quite well
Believe me, I got very self conscious when I found out it's a thing
I might be late but For windows software give Bottles a shot, you can install it as a flatpak or from the AUR Also you mightve have noticed that when installing software as a flatpak, those software cant access external storage Thats where flatseal comes in, it helps you give access certain apps/software in a nice app For parsec give Moonshine a try Its based on some cool popular project and its vendor agnostic (you can use it on Nvidia Amd intel)
As of writing this comment, I have been messing around with Linux for ~10 years, on and off. Me and my brother would create an Ubuntu Server for media storage, messing around with webdev etc. Right now I have all my machines running Arch Linux (except my MacBook) and I can confidently say it is the best switch I've ever made. My kinda old PC is insanely quick, snappy. My server machine uses such a little amount of resources when idling it's insane. Even though software support is still spotty, switching to Ubuntu/Mint is a great start for anyone wanting to tip their toes in Linux waters. Also huge thank you for putting your software on Linux! More devs like you are appreciated :D
I also use Nobara and I haven't had too many issues with it. The UI can be a little bit slower than expected at times though at weird times while the CPU is under heavier loads. I'm using the KDE version with Wayland so maybe that's causing some weird bug.
I think Debian spins like Mint are in general the "best" for the more casual computer user. I get there are the computer nerds out there that are obsessive about having "full control" over their systems, but the large majority of people don't care or have any idea what or how to change things even if they were slightly curious. It's a huge amount of time and commitment that most people really don't have time or technical to do. They just want things to work out of the box.
I switched to arch with dwm straight from windows 10 (because otherwise you are irrelevant the philospohy says) 😭😭😭😭it took me 1 year to get used to it and now I'm loving it
played along with linux for some time as my old hardware was only ever supported by win7 (both asus as well as amd never bothered to port required drivers to 8(.1) or 10 - and although I used win7 a year longer than its eol (up to winter 2021/2022) I moved over to Arch that time (can't remember if I moved in dec 2021 or jan 2022 - but around this time) - and yes, although it does have a steep learning curve at first - even if you are familiar with linux (I'm hosting linux servers since 2015 - but easier to admin ones like opensuse) - and get games to run depends on hardware - but I got used to no longer able to play most of ubisoft games (although thats on ubisoft as they somewhat actively deny linux it seems) - as for the rest: runs pretty solid ok, in games like hitman 3 there's still quite some impact even although I recently upgraded my hardware - but these impacts can be fixed just by invest in better hardware in the end
I used to have the same issue with laptop charging up until I installed Kubuntu, which recognizes it’s charging immediately and has even improved the battery life from my previous distro (Ubuntu Budgie)
Manjaro is good without aur; for discord and chrome use ; flatpak (thats can solve discords update problemand flatpak version of chrome allow synch) aaand over pamac u can use snaps too im using snap for fluent reader and shortwave :] btw if you looking somethings works and different try "xfce" version of manjaro; with flatpak and snaps since 3 year 0 problem with that only 3 key point here ; 1: never use aur, 2: use LTS kernel 3: everyweek check for updates and you will be fine :v manjaro is not arch but different kind of monster :] and again.. please try xfce xD
That's all good to know, but I'm really all settled on Fedora. I have tried xfce on other distros but I really am comfortable with Gnome
@@asatiirstales Actually if things works no matter what you using :D But due DT; Manjaro's flagship edition is xfce :] just i want point that out :]
Linux Mint = Change Wallpapper change Color Folder and Be Happy, or Do as i Say = POP OS
Linux Mint is great, it was one of the earliest distros I tried.
"Do as i Say" Is that supposed to be a joke or a misinformed dig at PopOS?
I first started to use Linux back in 2001 (PHAT Linux 3.3 anybody?) but only just recently started using it again after I found out my laptop (which has a 7th gen Intel processor) would not support Windows 11. I didn't see any reason to potentially toss a perfectly good computer, so I started looking at Linux again. Currently running Zorin OS and I couldn't be happier! My only regret is that it won't play The Long Dark very well.
I'm using arch btw I switched 1,5 years ago, because windows always decided to commit not live anymore after a certain amount of time. Anyways, I welcome you the world of Linux mate.
TPM is not for security it is for locking down your computer so you can only use windows
Let’s goooo 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
FIRST VIEW !!!!!
Good work! Doing a smaller project was a great idea.
Oh the main project is still on going, I'm just waiting for the team to finish specific assets before continuing!
@@asatiirstales Oh I didn't think you'd given up on Roses, I just meant that doing a smaller project in the meantime was a great idea! Keeps those creative juices flowing
I don't give a shit about your scripts or the fact that you feel like you need to read one in a cliche tone of voice. Get to the point.
Just want to point out you can run any EXE with proton through steam. There's a "add non-steam game" button, just select your EXE and edit the properties to run with proton. I run all EXEs this way.
I recommend Fedora for beginners and advanced users alike
Manjaro uses arch source code !! They have changed things so much that they are not based on arch !! They will tell you that !! For Zorin that packages installed on the pay version are in the repo's on the free versions !!
Yeah, with the Pro version of Zorin what you are really paying for is mostly support - plus a few extra desktop layouts. I don't think the extra pre-installed software is a selling point.
