This channel is to share my backyard beekeeping journey. Everything from my first day keeping bees in 2021 all the way up to what's happening today and looking into the future of things to come. I will share all my hive inspections so you can see right along with me what choices I made, why and what results you may expect to achieve or mistakes to avoid.
My videos are for everyone from prospective beekeepers to any beekeepers that are willing to help me navigate through issues on my continued journey in beekeeping.
I use a lot of data to track my hive conditions and I share my results so we can collaborate to learn from the information I gather and work towards a better understanding of what it all means.
I am not an expert on every detail of beekeeping but together with you the viewers I hope we can continue to learn and work towards a better beekeeping future.
If there is anything I can do to help you on your beekeeping journey let me know and thank you for your support!

Good looking hives!! It seems like he keeps standing/ walking in front of the hive
That may have been my fault since I was behind the hives I didn't leave him many choices. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Awesome video. Only thing working around the ole container on the ground with water in it was killing me lol
Haha! I probably should have moved it! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Surprised there wasn't more bridging. Kudos for being gentle with the hive and bees. Bees are really amazing creatures.
I was surprised to find it in the shape it was too. I am really glad it wasn't in worse shape but we prepared for the worst. The bees are amazing and that hive is still alive and doing well the last time I visited. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Makes you look bad
Thanks for commenting.
Where did you find this helper man😅
It was the first time he had ever been in a hive of bees. We all have to start somewhere.
These guys work like 3 years old child. Look how he's holding his tools😅
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Could they go any slower?I can take a three box have apart in fifteen minutes..
It's not a race, we were going through a hive with 7 years of propolis and I was teaching a first time beekeeper. We achieved our goal for that day. Beekeeping is enjoying so we went slow and enjoyed the process.
The peacefulness of your farm is so refreshing
Thank you and thanks for taking the time to comment.
how did this workout for the guy?
The split was too small to survive but we were able to split them this year and there are now 2 hives. Unfortunately he has taken a new position so access to the hives is currently limited.
No parasites/beetles at all? Wonder if it had to do with the propolis build up, the location, dumb luck, or obviously the strength of the colony
I think with all our inspections we only saw 2 small hive beetles, but we did see wax moths at one point. It may just be a combination of all the things you listed. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
This is a great video! I have learned so much. Everything you do, you explain why you're doing it. This is a very fast-paced profession. You have to learn to stay calm and think fast. I would love for one day to be able to do this. Thank You
It can feel a bit overwhelming at first but it is an exciting hobby that will keep you on your toes! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I was literally waiting for you to step in that tray of water through the whole video. Amazed that you didn't 🤣🤣🤣
Luckily missed it this time around! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Find the queen!what is he?! All he thinks is honey
Folks get into bees for different reasons. I think the question was about honey but his real excitement is with the biology of the bees.
Is there more about these bees
ua-cam.com/video/52HZ6zg4Ie0/v-deo.html I have put out one more video on them and we did get in them one time after this. The last time I had a chance to look at them (but not inspect them) they were both alive. If I am able to get in them again I'll be sure to share. Thanks for watching!
Do you have any trouble with the 'dirty' wax running underneath the towel above the cut in the pan?
I have not. If you place some wax on top of the lower edge of the paper towel as it melts it sort of seals the paper towel to the bottom. I do sometimes I get honey that flows through the paper towel but that can be cleaned up in a final rendering. I made a video about that and showed some of the candles we make and that process too.
What happened to the other hive. I remember you having two queens so made two hives…?
They did not survive. The split was not strong enough. We were able to make another split this year though and last I saw they were both still alive.
K.I.S.S! keep is so simple. But also effective. I like it
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I’ve never seen a colony that did NOT put propolis to join the frames at the tabs.
I agree some seem to do it more than others. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Cool flower! Where are you at Brian?
We are in West TN. We have to protect the plants in the winter to get them to bloom. They require 14 months of no killing frosts to bloom.
@@BrianCooper901 that banana tree looks amazing. I grow them for customers in their landscapes here in St. Louis.
Bees like Bananas, you just have to watch out if you are in a dearth they seen to really like the smell of them. Oh you mean Banana tree. That was cool Brian, Blessed Days...
Yea, sorry if I mislead you with the title! Thanks for watching DC
Very cool
Thanks for watching!
Good Stuff Brian, nice set up.👍
I don't have a lot of space so it's not huge but it works well for me. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Wow! Your wax and entire set up is so clean! It's no wonder you won the competition. It would be nice to see your initial rendering process. I think I could learn something. Yesterday, I cleaned up 7 boxes of drawn comb that I let the wax moths get into. I probably lost about 70% of the drawn comb. I did get a nice block of wax about 9" dia x 1.5" thick. Thanks for the shout out.
My initial rendering is just the solar wax melter then the pour through the filter. I still have some in the solar wax melter I can try to catch that part of it. Thanks for watching Phillip!
Seven years with no check and those bees must be super healthy. Id love to get my hands on some like that.
There is a good chance they swarmed several times, but this is probably like having a hive in a tree with a good size cavity. We are lucky enough to have them not too far from us so hopefully we are getting some of their genetics in our bees. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Makes the young guy so all the grunt work. Lol
Oh yea! I do the teaching and he can do the learning and lifting!
Good design and all, but you skip around in your explanations too much and lose your audiences focus. You need to simplify your explanations and keep it straight forward. Need to cut out the excessive chatter and keep it straight forward. Just show your materials, show how it goes together, what each piece does, what tools are required, what measurements you used. Then if you need to, go back and go into a little more in depth explanations. This is meant to be constructive criticism and not mean. I like what you did and how you did it. You just made it hard to follow especially when you skipped around in your explanations. Best way to do a how to explanation is to sit down, think about wjat you want to say and write it down in order and then practice it. You want to keep your audience focused and not confused. Don't try to wing it or do it on the fly. I hope this helps you for future videos.
Good input! I agree and I see it in my videos (especially while editing!) I do find it hard to find time to do it in more than one take and just try to clean it up in editing. I'll work on it! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I'm a newbie learner, but I've seen enough honey extractions on youtube to tell that those were some beautiful frames you harvested. You manner of getting the frames out and the bees off was done very neatly and methodically. And I see your honey extraction setup is equally neat, clean, and methodical. Almost like watching a Japanese Tea ceremony. Nothing slam bang about your operation, sir.
Thanks for your kind comments! We do take time to be sure we are neat and clean so our customers can enjoy our honey as pure as it can be. Thanks for watching!
Thank you!! I will try making one!
Awesome! Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed this video so much. It was a real treat!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I am surprised that you only wear latex gloves. I'd be bundled up like an Eskimo.
I can feel the edges of the frames and any bees I may be about to pinch. I really like them and the bees don't seem to think they are skin so they do not sting them unless I accidentally press on one too much when moving the frames around. I like that I can discard them and not have propolis on everything when I finish too. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Curious as to what one does with a bucket full of yellow jackets or wasps?
If you used it for that I would find a way to submerge the bucket in soapy water. If you use a straight shop vacuum the force is usually so strong it kills them, that's why we have to go through the efforts to reduce the suction so we don't harm the bees. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Hello there... My name is Bill Wright Jr I have been a beekeeper now for 10 + years. I have been mentoring folks as well and really like the way you are so patient and helpful with the young lad your helping get started in the beekeeping world. I have been watching a lot of your videos that you guys do in which he has been doing inspections with you and wondered if he has a bee keeping channel of his own . If so would like to follow him as well in his journey of beekeeping . Beekeeping is a journey in which i never regretted doing and plan on doing it well into the future . Keep up the good work , Hope to hear from you soon , Thanks Bill
Bill Thanks for taking the time to watch and the kind comments. He currently does not have a channel but I will pass along your message. He now has a hive at his home so he may be able to do that.
It's like the hive domesticated the beetle and decided to breed them as pets.
It was odd that this was the only hive like this! We haven't had much of a SHB issue the rest of the year. They are present but not overtaking any hives.
Wow. So healthy. So many. Newly hatched nurse bees probably couldn't get to the queen immediately and decided to charge a few cells. Poor queen is probably going crazy trying to find empty space. Foragers doing great as well. So much pollen. Excellent producers and workers. Not to mention relatively calm.
Thanks again for commenting!
Cell phones are great on cloudy days. If you can't tell if there are eggs or not. Ensure your phone camera is set to do high resolution pictures. Take a picture of the cells, zoom in on the picture, and you can easily see if it's a reflection or eggs.
Great tip thank you!
After this hive survived on its own for 7 years before last year's intervention, I probably would have felt poorly if they didn't survive this latest weather. After surviving for so long on its own, I imagine this hive has some FANTASTIC genetics.
It is a pretty awesome colony! We found no mites but I do believe it swarms often. Thanks for watching!
Such a great rooftop. The potted water source with some wetland plants was a genius idea to place up there.
That was all the work of the new beekeeper. He's got quite the green thumb. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You are braver than I am! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share!
@@BrianCooper901 ❤️❤️ it was a pleasure. I got a couple of shorts on here where I took off the bee suit. My husband thinks I’m nuts but really I was just hungry. 🤣🤣🤣
No way that hasn't been opened in 7 yrs .I'd bet my left nut I have worse hives after one season. I also have a 2016 inner cover and it's literally falling apart, these frames aren't even dark from bees walking on them .
Well I have been beekeeping 4 years and all I know is what I was told by the person that works there. I think it being on the roof may be helping prevent rotting. There were several frames that were very dark and one that was broken. I was expecting worse too. Thanks for commenting.
I came to YT to find a vac like what “Mr. Ed” uses and found this instead and just now made it. Thanks for the tips!

I'll try my best to explain in a little more detail as I do future videos. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Them being fine for 7 years certainly raises the mite and SHB question. Based on what everyone says about that stuff, those bees shoulda been wiped out at the 3-4 year mark.
They are very impressive!
We can learn a lot from you and have because you are very detailed. Thanks a bunch for posting all of this!❤
@@BrianGenX75 no problem, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Humans like to think we are necessary for everything but for some reason forget these creatures were surviving long before us.😂😂😂
@@BrianGenX75 yea they seem to be able to survive without much input.
@@BrianCooper901 still appreciate your education on them! Super interesting. Hugs sir!
I am understanding that bees have survived without treatment for 7 years! Amazing what bees can do without human intervention!
@@suzanneguiho4882 they are incredible! They may have swarmed or even died out but another swarm may have found it and that hive was still going!
@@BrianCooper901 I am sure that they have swarmed. Could be that there were dead outs but more came. That is their normal cycle of life especially with varoa threated bees🤷♀️
Thank's for giving me an idea.
No problem! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Why do you put the transportboxes so far away? Would it cause issues to have them right beside the hive you are working at?
If there is not a honey flow on the bees could come back and try to rob that honey out of the frames. This also gives us some distance so the bees can fly back to the hive and not be confused if the box was too close. I hope that answers your question. If not let me know. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
