Here is my other video on how I saved in the first year: m.ua-cam.com/video/AQFvdZVMs2E/v-deo.html If you don't have time to watch, here is how I saved nearly $80 when I signed up for Trusted House Sitters: 1) Create a Rakuten Account: First thing I did was sign up for a Rakuten account. It's completely free and allows you to earn cashback on your online purchases, including for travel expenses. Rakuten deposits your cashback directly into your PayPal account, which you can then transfer to your bank. I used a referral code from a travel UA-camr (30 And a Wake Up) and I received a $30 sign-up bonus when I bought my Trusted Housesitter subscription. You can find Rakuten referral links online or you can use my referral link if you want: www.rakuten.com/r/THOMAS53352?eeid=28187 2. Join Trusted Housesitters with a Referral Code: You can use a referral code for a 25% discount when you buy your Trusted Housesitters membership. When I signed up for Trusted Housesitters, I used a referral code from a travel UA-cam couple (Brian and Carrie). If you want, you can use my referral code: RAF791411 Here is the referral link: www.trustedhousesitters.com/refer/raf791411/? By utilizing both the referral code and Rakuten cashback, you can save over 60% on a Trusted Housesitters membership. Here's a breakdown: Basic Membership: $129 Trusted Housesitter Referral Code Discount: -$32.25 (25% off) Rakuten Cashback on Trusted Housesitter: -$17.50 Rakuten Sign-up Bonus: -$30 Total Cost: $49.25 That's a savings of $79.75! Let me know if you have any questions :)

Great information. For those wanting to establish residency in states without income tax like Texas or Florida don't forget to notify your former state and comfirm you're not a resident anymore. States like California have been going after former residents for state taxes. So make the break very clear and get confirmation.

The dark windowless rooms are often more quiet and one can sleep sounder. If you get bumped or buy a room with a window get the north side of the ship. The south side will be extremely hot. 🔥 😮 Even with the curtains closed a/c won't be able to keep up. If you use a particular cruise line look at buying their stock. Normally it's 100 shares and up. Share holders get special perks and freebies etc. Ie. Carnival cruises stock price (at the time of writing this is: around $15.08 so for $1500+- you can get perks that after a few uses will cover the cost of the stocks. Also look to see if they offer a travel club or points program. Carnival has the VIFP club $250 discount on next cruise and points earned on every day of cruises. They have a points credit card but you'll have to see if it's worth it compared to chase's cards etc. But it normally comes with a sign up bonus of 25k+- points. You can qualify for then use then close out the card a few months later. They also might have a referral program. 😊 Ok the Moose juice just is wrong...😅😵‍💫😳

The second half with Rakuten was a game changer. Ive heard about it but then forgot it until now. For House sitters try to build up some reviews/references with friends by watching their homes. Yes there's some cost for that. The video call option is a favorite for the home owners when narrowing down their candidates. So might with your saving hacks be very worth it to upgrade to the next level. Great premise for the channel. Btw. I like how you incorporate value with the links you provide. Have you seen Ruri Ohama's channel? Great use of storytelling and her seemless integration with the products she uses is next level.

Thanks for your comments! Rakuten is pretty sweet. It's like all of the stuff I normally buy is now on sale :) Yes, I've had some video calls with owners on Trusted Housesitters and they have been great. Both the sitter and the owner can get a better feel on eachother. Yes! I actually watched a couple of Ruri videos when I was looking up info on Japan because she speaks a ton of different languages.

Good question! I've followed a lot of people in the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) community for several years and many of them would reference that they use Personal Capital / Empower to track their finances. Although I was very skeptical to link my accounts, I ended up doing it in 2018. To my knowledge, there have not been any major data breaches or anything like that and I've been happy with the product. Here are some resources that you can cross reference from some personal finance / FIRE bloggers: www.financialsamurai.com/is-personal-capital-safe-to-use/ www.mrmoneymustache.com/2013/10/11/personal-capital-the-investors-version-of-mint/ jlcollinsnh.com/2018/06/22/tracking-your-holdings/ www.getrichslowly.org/personal-capital/ www.playingwithfire.co/resources

I've done a 5, 11, and 14 night reposition cruise, with a 13 night Vancouver to Japan coming up. You'll get an older crowd on any longer cruise, especially reposition. There may be a few status snobs on board, and some 7 day Carnival fans don't enjoy 14 night as much (especially halfway through). They added 30 min enrichment talks to our Journey cruise, and a retro 80's day. You don't really need a window or veranda, but they do make sense in Alaska, Chile, Norway, etc. Now that we're starting to head out international, Oneworld Alliance is something I'm glad to jump into as former Delta loyalists.

You overlooked a couple details. Mainly that the base fare is per person, double occupancy. The taxes and fees add $202.83 per person, and the daily gratuity fee adds another $224 per person. So that $489 fare is really $1404.83 for one person or $1831.66 for two people. Also that price is for a "guaranteed" inside cabin. The scare quotes are intentional as cruise lines often overbook, and without a cabin number, you might arrive at the pier to discover they don't have a cabin for you. So pay a bit more to get a cabin number assigned when you book. Another risk is that you'll get a cabin underneath a nightclub or a pool and find it very noisy at all hours. Do you want a porthole? That costs more. A picture window,? More still. A balcony? You get the idea. Also consider that over the course of 14 days, 8 of which will be at sea, you may find yourself looking for something to do. While there are many free activities such as sunbathing, swimming, a gym, trivia games, movies, music, and live entertainment in the theater, as well as a free buffet and some sit down restaurants; there's a lot of things which cost extra, most notably the casino, spa, classes, shore excursions, shopping, premium restaurants, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, and sodas to name a few. It is possible to not spend an extra dime while onboard, but on average, cruisers tend to spend as much onboard as they paid for the cruise in the first place. Cruising does have its advantages for vacationing such as only having to unpack once while visiting several places, and having the basics all included in the price. As a means of traveling from point A to point B though, you'll probably find a better rate on a first or business class plane ticket.

Post it notes, just a few: covers the peep hole in hotels, acts like a lint brush, reminders for the next day on the mirror so I can sleep not worrying I’ll forget. Also a couple binder clips: pulls curtains together that last inch to keep light out makes backpack into a compression bag kind of to keep stuff distributed and not a pile at the bottom. I move 1 binder clip from the inside of my bag to the outside each time I take a cord out to “keep score” that I put all of them back in and didn’t leave one behind the bed because that was were the stupid outlet was. Learn how to fold a basket from a piece of paper, I empty my pockets into that at night to not lose things. I’m not someone who normally eats a meal replacement bar, but I keep one in my bag and have been so glad I had it when flights changed and concession stands were closed.

Admittedly, LAX is not the best airport to walk to however in this example, it would be a 0.7 mile walk to a close hotel. I understand your sentiment though! I exclusively travel with a carry-on backpack which makes it significantly easier than rolling a bag on the sidewalks.

UPDATE: Beginning July 1, 2024, Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card cardmembers will no longer have access to restaurants, cafes and markets participating in Priority Pass Select. BOO! Access to Priority Pass Select's network of lounges and other select airport experiences is not impacted by this update. I plan on stickling with the Reserve despite this unfortunate development. Most airlines even today still allow you to bring a carry-on with you (with a few exceptions) at no extra charge ( by carry-on I mean a bag that can go in the overhead bin). Only a few limit you to just a "personal item" (backpack) before you pay fees. Most people I think can probably pack enough for 1 week into a traditional carry-on bag if they are willing to do atleast one load of laundry during their trip. Second, many people may just opt to pay the bag fee for a traditional carry-on as $35 or even $50 each way may be seen as worth it, considering it might take you 90 minutes to 2 hours to do a load of laundry at a facility and that time could be spent doing something else OR where they are going maybe doesn't have free laundry and they must go somewhere and pay a few dollars, plus the time, when they could have either just bought a traditional carry-on for a small fee or in many cases, no additional charge and avoid the laundry thing alltogether. If I was going away for maybe 3 days and I could rewear my pants for all 3 days then I might be inclined to skip the traditional carry-on as I can easily pack a shirt, underwear and socks for 3 days into a backpack, along with some other things, maybe even a spare pare of pants, but if it's more than 3 days them I'm just going to probably bring a regular carry-on bag even if it means paying $30 extra (mainly for convenience) because I'm convinced that trying to avoid paying thre small fees doesn't really pan out in the end, and what you save in the fee, you waste in time spent doing something you could have avoided. Now if you're maybe going hiking for a week, then that's different because you don't want to be lugging around a rolling carry-on bag, but for most trips for most people, it's worth it to pay the small fee or in many cases, there is no additional charge for a traditional carry-on bag that goes in the overhead bin, and if anything, you can bring both (a personal item -- backpack -- and a regular carry-on bag). If I do that, I could easily do a 4-5 day trip probably without the need for a checked bag, which is my ultimate goal--carry-on I can deal with).

Great insights! For some people, checking a bag or using a rolling carry-on bags would totally make sense. Thanks for sharing.

I use a large ziplock bag for dirty clothing. It keeps smells contained and by adding water & soap you can wash clothing in the bag, then hang to dry.

Genius! I think I'll try this technique the next time I'm on the road. Thanks for sharing!
