Will we regret towing a trailer back from Gulfport, Florida? Probably! Did we try it anyway? Yes!
Join us on the start of our journey back from Gulfport, Florida. We towed a uhaul trailer back 1300 miles, which was certainly a challenge!

Testing the towing consumption on our 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge with a small Uhaul trailer. We're heading down to Florida soon, and on the way back we plan to tow a Uhaul with a PacMan arcade and possibly some furniture, I wanted a baseline consumption to help me plan the trip back. The results were better than I expected, and it tows like a dream!

Join us for our trip back home from Northport, Michigan! We drive almost 400 miles back home in our 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge. Efficiency was a little worse on the way back as it snowed almost 2 inches the night before we left, which made for a messy but beautiful first hour of the drive. At our first charge in Cadillac, we ran into an Equinox EV, the first time I'd seen one in person. I liked t...

👍👍😎😎
u need to choose all thee of those icons at the top of the charge screen. you only had the one on the left chosen
Oof that efficiency is rough! Good to know... might avoid towing based on that lol. Only time I've seen mine that high (like 58-59 kWh/100) was on a day with record lows around like -15 with high winds and a 70mph highway. I also found Google's estimates were way off at that level (like 10%+)
@@TheRealSpuff it was brutal.. I wouldn’t have minded as much if I was alone, but it was rough making such slow progress with the baby. I do wish google would adjust better to your recent efficiency, during regular driving it’s usually pretty accurate.
I'm in Madison, WI and have my eye on the Volvo XC40, but I'm worried about the winters. How has yours done in the Chicago winters in regards to range and keeping the cabin warm?
@@CanopyFlyer150 range takes a pretty decent hit, I’d probably count on 140-150 highway miles instead of 180ish in good weather. Preheating the battery will help. For getting around town there’s no issues with range at all. Driving in snow is great, absolutely no issues on the stock tires. Cabin gets nice and toasty and the seat heater/steering wheel heater both work very well. Preconditioning the cabin is magical in cold weather, you can have it turn seat and steering wheel heat too. We had multiple weeks of single digit temps last winter and it was a great car for the winter in all regards! ETA: the 2024 and newer models have a bigger battery than my 2023, so expect more range with newer models.
(1:10) that lack of tire-pressure info in Volvos is inexcusable when every other automaker has it, including cars costing half as much …
@@panameradan6860 it’s definitely annoying. My 2013 LR2 can tell me when tire pressure is low.. which is basically all this can do.
After waiting for my Audi Q4 for 26 months so far, I’ve had enough and decided to purchase a pre owned 2023 Volvo xc40 recharge with 9K miles. Delivery of the Q4 was anticipated for March, 2025. Who knows, perhaps a tariff would be placed on it. I don’t want to take a chance. So I’ll be able to use Tesla superchargers?? All of them? Where do I get the adapter that you have? I enjoy your videos. They help me to know what to expect. Thanks!
@@kenbaker8924 congrats on the Volvo, love my 2023! You’ll be able to use almost all V3 and V4 stations. Any stations that are V2 and V3 combined, typically older stations that were expanded, will not be available as far as I know. You can use the Tesla app to search for non Tesla eligible superchargers. I got the A2Z adapter from their website, but you can also order one through your Volvo dealer. I’m not sure what brand they are using, but I opted for the A2Z after watching reviews on State of Charge (he also has a discount code). Enjoy your car!
Hi I just bought one over their website a couple of days ago for my wife Volvo c40,use the code STATEOFCHARGE and you would get 10% off,I haven’t try it because I will get it this next Tuesday, how ever I would like to know if we can use it with out warranty troubles I hope I explain my self because English is not my primary language,I bought the c40 in a Mexico City dealership near the border and we crossed the border regularly,I talked to my salesman in Volvo the other day and I let him know about the adapter and the said that Volvo hasn’t approved any kind of adapter to use with Tesla’s superchargers,so what do you guys think? Should I have any kind of problem at the time I use the adapter? I don’t want the car go up in flames 😂
Just FYI, A2Z's guidance is to put the adapter onto the tesla handle first, then plug into the car. I noticed you did it the other way around, which I believe is the method Lectron uses(?), not A2Z. It probably won't be an issue, but given everything involved here I'll follow A2Z's instructions myself.
@@lowfuel6089 I’ll reread the instructions tomorrow to double check. I thought it said plug into the car first, then plug the Tesla handle into the adapter but I could have misread.
@@LandLectric Always put the adapter on the cable first. Most ev's have a micro switch on the latch so if you plug in the adaptor first it can (not always) cause an error on the communication pins.
@@chetsaxton1526 interesting, thanks for the context. I did just reread the official A2Z instructions, they’re in my hand in fact, and it does say plug the adapter into the vehicle and then plug the NACS handle into the adapter. That definitely did not work for me however! I will try plugging the handle into the adapter first next time and see if it works on the first try.
Nice drive👍👍
What a beautiful drive! Do you prefer routing your trips yourself or just using Google on the xc40?
@@Balogh-sx4ls usually a little bit of both. The google routing is great, but it does overestimate ChargePoint chargers and can take a while to show new chargers on the map. Overall it’s been really reliable though!
Great update. Love my used 2023 C40 Recharge at 50% of MSRP from Hertz! Bought it with 14,500 miles and have driven 2K. Haven't had so much fun since my 68 Mustang 289. Biggest surprise: one pedal driving is natural and intuitive. My wife is susceptible to motion sickness, and no problems. Biggest wish: digital review mirror due to limited visibility in the fast back. I added a FitCamx. Mounts below the mirror and looks OEM.
It is such an incredibly fun car to drive, glad you’re enjoying yours and thanks for watching!
I’m looking forward for some road trips using Tesla chargers now that you have access. Once you get an adapter of course
@@KMasters2015 I have my A2Z adapter ready to go, haven’t done a test yet but I will soon. We’ll be using a supercharger on the way to Cincinnati for thanksgiving and I’m really excited because that Lafayette electrify America fills up real fast!
@ I honestly think it’s a game changer. I’m seriously considering non Tesla EVs that have supercharger access especially ones like your Volvo that have the port in the proper location
@ yea I can’t wait to try it out. Honestly I’ve had great luck with ccs chargers for the most part, but having so many options is going to make trips so much better.
Looking great bro!!! Planning on picking up an xc40 next year probably looking at a 2022. Last weekend i rented the xc60 drove through the autobahn it was magical ❤❤❤❤
@@AlistairArbour-qi3xp this is the first Volvo I’ve driven, it’s a nice machine! I’m jealous that you get to drive on the autobahn 😂
Great vid. Cheers. Getting one next month! To me the are the nicest ev for the price.
@@nimbusspacewagon they are really great, we’re officially at 15,000 miles driven now and I have very few complaints. Are you getting a newer model? The bigger battery and range would be nice.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
43:10 - and yet if you parked in front of multiple gas pumps, that same muppet probably would have keyed your car. Some serious SDE with that parking job 🙄 Beautiful footage! Seems like things went decent enough for you charging wise. I can't wait for NACS access... there are too many CCS charging deserts in my area. With that said, almost at 25k miles and I've made it everywhere I've wanted to go, even if not the most direct route at times. I've found what I think you said you saw too though -- Google tends to underestimate the destination charge percent, which is at least better than the other way around.
Marshmallow is super cute!
Yeah! 👍🏻
I just bought a ‘23 XC40 recharge. Your vids gave me peace of mind and helped me seal the deal! Thanks!!
Congrats, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
I’ve watched a ton of car videos and this was so refreshing. Appreciate a person just talking about regular car things without the salesman vibe. Love it.
@@dstephens183 thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!
I have a fascination for this car 😁...🤩 My dream...
Beautiful drive, looks fun! Holy moly those evgo stations are expensive.
i'm waiting for the next uploads👍👍👍👍👍👍

my dream.............🥹
Thanks for this video! It was really helpful. Do you recommend the dog trunk cover you have? I’m in the market for a good one for my two shedding cattle dogs. Thank you!!
@@henamedmeseven I had a cattle dog for 15 years, great dogs! I do like it, it does a good job with the dog hair and any other mess. The dog hair doesn’t stick either so it’s pretty easy to vacuum clean. It makes accessing the sub trunk a little tricky, but that’ll be the case for any cover.
@@LandLectric Thank you! yeah, attempting to keep this new car less hairy this go around but we will see how long it lasts. Always such high hopes at the very beginning, but two dogs and two kids is usually no match for any car.
Thanks for the video. We also got a CPO XC40 Ultimate w/ <4,500 miles few months ago. Used is the best way to get the XC40. I would not get it new… It replaced our Fisker Ocean (worst decision ever!) and is our 8th EV since 2013. Love the 1-pedal regen calibration, ambient lighting, seats, L2 ADAS not requiring mapped roads, etc. But I hate the back up camera. It is too small of a view and it’s almost useless at night. I’ll be publishing my initial review later this week and it will include a minor mod to increase frunk space, as well as details on how to stow the trunk cover under the trunk floor. I’m saving infotainment and driving impressions for subsequent videos.
@@EV_OG I’m very curious about your frunk mod! I’ve found the backup camera to be usable, but the field of view and angle aren’t great. I haven’t really had too much trouble at night, but our driveway has a street light close by and that’s where we usually back up from.
Is it possible to specify if say you only want to use EA charging stations so it will plot a route accordingly? Thanks
@@iantelinside I don’t think you can specify brands, I always do a bit of research via ABRP and PlugShare to see what my options are though. Several times on the way back to Chicago it has tried to send me to a broken shell charger so I don’t trust it 100%. From Kyle Conner’s EX30 video it looks like there are some additional customization options, hopefully we’ll get those eventually on the 40.
Looks like I was wrong! When you’re in google maps you can go to the settings, then there is an option that says ‘EV Payment Filters’ and you can select which networks you want. I haven’t actually used this yet so I’m not 100% sure how it will work, but the option is there.
@@LandLectric cool, thanks!
Thanks for the video - did you have Volvo or somebody else install the tow hitch?
Nevermind! Just saw in your 5k mile review that it's the factory hitch.
I negotiated it as part of the purchase. They did a great job, looks and functions great! We towed 1300 miles from Florida back to Chicago and that didn’t exactly go as planned.. got stuck in Georgia for a day with a charging bug. That video will be out eventually!
Also how to you enter screen cleaning mode?
@@diydrivenGA hold the center button for about 3 seconds and it will switch to screen cleaning mode. Hold again for 3 seconds to go back. If you continue holding for about 20 seconds it will restart the system, useful if you ever get a bug or the system is running slow!
Doesn't Volvo advise against using an extension cord with the EVSE? Just checking as I'd like to charge outdoors but would need a cord. Also what are the specs for the extension cord?
@@diydrivenGA in general it’s better to avoid extension cords, but if you do use one make sure to get the proper gauge that can handle continuous 12 amps of power. I believe I got one that is rated for 20 amps. I wouldn’t want to use it for daily charging, but on trips I’m comfortable using it.
What year is your XC40 Recharge? I like this car a lot so thanks for sharing this video.
It's a 2023 ultimate trim. I've got an in depth review of the car too if you want more details, it's a great car! 2024 models have better range and charging, but I got a good deal on it. Range is good enough anyway, just drove it down to Florida a couple weeks ago!
Great review -- I have an identical vehicle down to the color/interior and agree with all your thoughts (going on 20k miles here). Do you find the auto high beam setting on yours is very sensitive to reflective markers (like on mailboxes)? On mine, I find they trip it up all the time and cause it to dip back to lowbeams. Sometimes I end up just flipping it to manual control if I have someone driving behind me as I can only imagine what they are thinking as they see the brights constantly cycling in sections of the road. I feel like that problem would be a non-issue with the adaptive lights as I'm assuming it would probably just blank out that section of the road, versus fully cycling off and on... but I'm doubtful we'll ever see it in the US due to the NHTSA requirements being so stringent that none of the existing hardware seems to be capable of meeting them.
Honestly I haven’t had too much opportunity to use them yet because most roads I drive on at night are neighborhoods or well lit. I did use them up in Michigan and they did react to reflective signs or road markers sometimes but not enough to bother me. I’ll have to try them out more. Bummer about the pixel availability.. I’ve seen Bjorn’s video on them and they look amazing, I’d really love to have that capability!
@@LandLectric Yeah same here, the video of them in action was great. I've heard you can technically unlock it with a third party software called "OrBit", but I don't think I want to press my luck with the (il)legality of that on the roads haha. I hope you continue to enjoy the car! Came across this channel as we got the tow hitch recently for bike racks, but have been interested in the experience of actually towing something, so thanks for the recent video on your experience with that.
@@TheRealSpuff yea I don’t think I want to jailbreak the car and worry about that 😂 I’m current in Florida after roadtripping 1300 miles down here, planning on towing a trailer back - plans may change but we’ll see how that goes if it happens!
Appreciate the video. Many thenks!
Dog mode is absolutely needed...
Yea, it would be huge. Keeping it at 72 degrees for 30 minutes is better than nothing though! You can always restart it after 30 minutes too but you can't monitor the cabin temp. I definitely wouldn't leave a dog in there for very long, but it works for running into a store while charging!
How is the clearance beneath and does the battery pack project downward? I know Volvo's are typically safe but protecting the battery pack is huge for EVs.
I think the clearance is about 7 inches. We took it up a pretty gnarly gravel road to Sandy Mush Herb Nursery over some decent size rocks, huge ruts and a couple stream (very small) crossings with no issues. The battery pack does not stick out, it seems well protected but I haven't crawled under there.
Cutie
Does the xc40 charge as well as you expected? Fun looking trip!
Sometimes I wish it was as fast as the 800 volt cars, but for our needs it does the job!
Wish you had gotten some more looks and maybe even info on the Equinox! Everyone is anxious to get reviews and more news about them since they haven’t actually been delivered to customers yet!
If the guy wasn’t sitting in it I would have poked around it more but I really didn’t want to bug him while he was working. It looks nice though, very curious to see how it charges!
That first part of the drive in the snow is beautiful!
Another cool looking trip
✋ "promo sm"
Jesus - you're not wrong it's not the most efficient car, I know it's a completely different animal but my model 3 averages (20-21kwh/100) on the freeway from Sydney to Melbourne (c.600miles) at an average 62-65mph my first stop is 397km / 247mi from my house and I think the lowest I have arrived with is 11 or 12% remaining in rainy 6-8C (42-46F) weather / my lifetime efficiency is 17.5kwh/100. I don't think I could live with that sort of real world range and efficiency.
Yea, hard to beat the model 3 for efficiency! The comfort and build quality is top notch though and for daily driving around town it’s amazing. Hoping to get an ev9 or maybe an ex90 in the future.
Nice to see Electrify America giving no issues
What a fun car trip!
Took a little longer than a gas road trip, but it was fun! The way back we took a slightly different route and went to a cool charger in Saugatuck. Stay tuned for part 2!
What a fun looking adventure!
Bravo-you made iinteresting edition-goodnight~ :))
How do you like the xc40 recharge, any issues with it?
The range could be better, but it's such a great car to drive!
