First time at the Rock Hound Rally - 2022 Bronze
Переглядів 4532 роки тому
This was my first time at the Rally Connex Rock Hound Rally which starts/ends in Cloyne ON. With a DRZ400S and little real off road experience, and riding solo, I opted for the Bronze class expecting a relatively easy ride. Sadly I didn't get as much video coverage as I hoped to - the GoPro was plugged into a battery bank for the day, but technical problems had it stopping from time to time. Wh...

Finally after weeks of work I got the chance to fire up the engine for the first time ever. 2 priming kicks, then 2 kicks with ignition on and it fired right up. Little bit of tuning, timing etc. and off to the races. www.dotheton.com FTW!

hope the day comes when you learn not to wear sneakers when kick starting a bike
LOL hope the day comes when you've rebuilt the same type of motor a few times over the course of 10 years and know its behavior well enough to not need a steel shank boot, a safety vest and an ambulance on stand by to kick start a motorcycle.
Thanks for the ride-along. We did Cranberry Lake Rd last weekend, what a fun road that is! Adding that to my repeat list, for sure.
Very wet :-)
In a similar situation as you, am planning to do the Silver Adv class (single cylinder) with my DR650. My intention is to use it as a learning experience and know the gap in both my fitness and skill level as well as DR’s limitations for such/rally-raid kinda events. I would love to catch-up and take some notes from you about your takeaways and any advice that you may have for me. I am in Toronto and ready to drive/ride within Ontario for a meetup. Lemme know if its possible for you. Great video and details. Thanks for sharing!!
Any reason you're doing Silver vs Bronze? I'm sure you can pick and choose in Silver as well, but you may find yourself in with a bunch of guys on KTM's riding for glory as they work towards the Gold class. There are a few 'Adventure' rider groups on Facebook covering the GTA that you should check out facebook.com/groups/1791201907930391
I have a number short films of airshows from the same timeframe that I'm digitizing and will upload soon.
Also great to see Charlie Gene and Tom In their pitts Along with joe Hues and the supersteerin looks like Gordon on top of the wing. Or Johnny Great to see All these guys brings back a lot of memories and a lot of fun times .
Art scholl and the chipmunk will live on forever high flight art.
Weird waddling sound. The seat looks like a real ball killer.
The seat has a cutout for the balls, and the short open pipes coupled with the camera's microphone certainly contribute to the sound. That and the 277 degree re-phase of the crankshaft alter the sound and performance pretty significantly. It was an absolute beast easily taking me to 120MPH with more to give. Sold the bike a few years ago to a first time rider and haven't seen it or the rider since.
@@dothetontim, A first time rider sounds like a death sentence to me. My first bike was a 1970 Honda SL 100. Second and 3rd were 1968, 1970 Honda CL 450's. Last bike was a 1977 650 Yamaha twin. The Yamaha was the best of the 4 bikes. It had the least amount of maintenance related issues.
Nice video! (I even got a cameo in it. 👍🏻)
Tough !
I feel like I had a filming crew following me, very good quality footage. What camera did you use?
Don't try that with a Lucas ignition!! She sounds great. Is it as smooth as it looks and sounds with the re-phase?
It was very nice after the rephase. Not sure I'd go through the expense of that again, but it was fun building up the motor with the rephased crank, 750cc pistons, lumpy cam, titanium valves etc. Ran like a beast but I could still ride it around town. I've since sold the bike - not sure where it is these days.
It was diseased and at risk of falling over for anyone who doesn’t know how hard Toronto makes it to remove a tree. Have to have them checked and cleared for removal or face massive fines.
That’s wicked man

Beautiful!
lol....i hear that pink panther tune...da-dant da-dant
Damn - you're 100% right on that. Now I'll never be able to ride it again without seeing the face!

Old British slang for 100MPH. Come visit us at DO THE TON (Google it - I can't post a link in a comment here).
3 years later and now you can link stuff. www.dotheton.com/
what does TON mean?
Im aware of the piston having valve reliefs, just wanted to make sure nothing touches. lol. I am going a bit over 750 and want to keep stock diameter valves and maybe reduce the intake diameter a bit. Anyways thanks for the help.
It was a whole package I worked out with Ryan for the ported head with the titanium valve train, rephased crank etc. so you're best off talking to him about it. No clearance issues at all - the XS pistons have big valve reliefs cut into them, and the 750cc pistons I used have larger than normal valve pockets to accommodate the larger intakes.
If you do not mind me asking how much did guides, valves, caps and keepers run you?
I looked up your build. Nice work. My only concern is the valves. Ive turned down Ti valves to OEM spec but yours are not only oversized but by the picture the intake is not dished (piston relief).Any contact there?
If you search for Tim XS650 750cc you'll find it - topic #448 (I started the build in 2007)
Ive done the same. Just have to cut some valves about 40mm shorter and turn them till they meet oem specs. Ive just never heard of anyone having them on the shelf. Whats the name of your thread? I looked at the forum and its pretty cool
Check in with Ryan at 707Racing (can't post the link here). He did the head work and rephased the crank. It has titanium valves and retainers sourced from NASCAR, as well as custom milled bronze valve guides. You can read all the gory detail over at DO THE TON (easy to find) the biggest cafe racer website out there (I run it).
Who supplies Ti valves for these motors? Do you have the Ti valves or just the Ti spring caps? Did you degree your #1 cam after install?
It's a 1972 Yamaha XS1b (early XS650) frame with a 1984 XS650 engine that has been significantly modified. The tank is a custom aluminum Manx replica as is the seat. Not much is stock on the bike. You can see all the details on our site - dotheton com (UA-cam doesn't allow the posting of links).
What year model is the bike/
Beautiful bike man,very beautiful!
In theory it is smoother than stock. But I went from a bone stock rebuilt motor to the fully kitted out rephased motor with the ported head, 750 kit and hot cam, so it's apples and oranges. It runs awesome. I might have done something bad running it in Alabama in October for the annual DO THE TON Mama Tried get together coinciding with the Barber Vintage Festival. Got it up to 120mph at about 9000 RPM and it's smoking a bit out the left now. Will tear into it and see what I did :)
Now, how sweet is that!? Second stomp, huh? Is it just me or is a rephased engine running smoother?
feels good just sitting here and watching it
You bet! Watch for the 2012 videos to come shortly. Just got home from the weekend with Dime City Cycles, Loaded Gun Customs and more at the Ace Corner - Barber Vintage Festival in Alabama. In 2012 the XS650 got a hopped up 750cc rephased ported head titanium valved race cam engine :D
Is the bike with the camera xs650?If it isn't what is it?
I should of course also mention we're all returning to Alabama in 2 weeks for the 8th annual Barber Vintage Festival and will be setting up the Ace Corner with Dime City Cycles, the Ace Cafe out of London England, Iron & Air and many other awesome participants. Just do a simple search and you'll find the details.
I def will, thanks for the info :)

That's so cool. My town needs a cafe racer group. I'm one of three people with a cafe racer :/ Harley Davidson's dominate my city -__-
superbes images,bravo !!!!!!
Thanks... nice bike and ride.
Not sure what you mean. Do you mean how fast is the bike now? We'll find out next month in Alabama at the Barber Vintage Festival / DO THE TON get together :D
how fast have you gotten your xs rephased?
Tank is a custom one-off replica of a Norton Manx racing tank. If you want to know more about this bike and where to get a tank etc. Google us at DO THE TON (can't past a link here)
Excllent looking machine, Congratulations. What tank is that?
