Bryan Park Crit #13 - Penultimate Race of the Summer

Lots of break variations. No one seemed satisfied with any of the groups A small group of 5 was able to sneak away with 2 laps to go. Macon was able to hold on to 5th and David was 3rd from the field

Scheduling for this one got a bit messy. - 35-39 and 40-44 age groups were originally supposed to be separate races. - 2 days out, they were combined. - About an hour before race, rain started coming down and there was a crash delay during the womens race right before us. - During staging, race directors gave us a choice of keeping the 2 groups combined and racing full hour, or going back to sp...

Break of 3 got away when Macon got a little too sendy into party corner. After that, tried everything possible to rally the pack to help pull it back. When that wasn't working, tried a couple attacks. DT and Cutaway were like shadows and kept any chase or bridge from going anywhere. On to the next one....

Spent laps 2-5 off the front. Was hoping a few guys would bridge and then we could work together but no luck. Spent a bunch of energy trying to bring back 2 pair of flyers last 2 laps. Seemed like none of the other teams that missed wanted to help and the the teams with guys up the road did a good job of disrupting the front. 10th 35 and 16th overall

    You guys got a lot of help from the Cutaway blockade with 2 to go. I threw away any chance of a final sprint just to break through, but nobody followed. I don't know how 20+ guys all thought they'd be the last 2 people to score points.

    Hi Phil! I love your Cycling videos! Watching your videos make my indoor trainig a lot more fun and less boring! I just bought a GoPro 12 with a Chest mount. Sadly, when I visited the footage after my metric century today. I sadly didn't get any of the views I liked. The camera angle was shooting my handlebars only :( I am so sad and frustrated but hey, is early in the season here in Central New York. Hope for more and better days to come! This is my third year of cycling and I have been doing very well! So far I've been on a streak of doing 6 weeks of 200 miles! Hope it keeps going! Maybe some day I will visit Virginia (I think that is where you are located?) Hope to do a few events this year. Would love to do a Gran Fondo. I was thinking of doing the Maryland Gran Fondo since that is in SEPTEMBER 15, 2024. Keep riding and stay safe! Might be thinking of using the helmet mount for my GoPro.

    Man, that was a fun one! And weird, lol. I didn't have my camera running this race because, frankly, I was feeling pretty sh*t. Sick for a week after Chesapeake and hadn't ridden since. We put the GoPro on Kruegler, thinking he’d be the guy up there for our team result this week. Getting the win this time was a surprise. I couldn’t believe it! And honestly, I was just as excited to see David cross the line in second. He’s been working hard all year- it’s always great seeing guys like him have their day. First of many, I’m sure. Hope you don't mind me sharing our race report here! _____ The first 30 mins of the race were pretty cagey, huh? Not a lot of initiative from Cutaway compared to other weeks. Between the heat, humidity, and just being on the downslide from the season's peak, it didn't seem like many folks were itching for a hard day. Some weeks it seems folks don't like fully committing to a breakaway that Cutaway isn't in, but we were really worried about getting caught out tonight. Sweetspot were doing a great job of keeping numbers at the front. More than a few times, it felt like if a move were to go, we'd need to do a lot of work to make it across. In the last half, I made it my job to keep you guys in check. The way you were stacking the front and letting your guys float off occasionally when most of our team was further back put a lot of work on my plate. When our final breakaway got the initial gap, I was so nervous seeing the gap going out. I was hosed! Towards the end of the race, I was emptying my tank marking all of you guys, while everyone else on the team was in great position behind- around 10th wheel. From 6 to 4 to go, I tried stringing it out out of the corners and easing up going into the downhill stretch before the final corner. The thinking was to create a perfect opportunity for the team to counter. I was close to my limit the last time, and when I sat up, I realized someone opened the gap and let us float off. 😵‍💫 Brandon (BikeFit) and I accelerated out of "party corner" simultaneously on opposite sides of the road, so we were both a little cooked when Macon and David started rotating through. He tried to force me into the paceline ahead of him, but frankly, I was cooked! I kinda forced his hand, opening up a little gap, but thankfully he bit the bullet and ended up chasing Macon (solo) and David (sweet spot) for almost half a lap. Going into 2-to-go, I tried using what I had left to pull hard on the uphills to keep the speed high without giving anyone else in the break a significant rest. The gap wasn’t huge, so I didn’t want to create a situation where there was too much confusion for our team about when or if to chase/ sprint in the last lap. But I needed to rest as much or more than everyone else to have a chance. I knew Macon likes to go long from the break, and he was also the only solo guy in the move, so I figured he'd be the most motivated to stay away- I had my head on a swivel going into the last lap looking for him. He attacked on the downhill going into party corner on the opposite side as Brandon and David, so I jumped hard to get to him and barely braked in time to take the corner. He kept the power down until just after that riser on the backstretch. I opened it up early, going into the hill before the final corner to keep my speed high. Worst case scenario would have been David jumping me before the corner and needing to accelerate on the hill to get into his draft. Keeping my speed high and going long and steady felt like my only shot, no pop left... I’m not sure if there wasn’t room for Brandon and David after I squeezed past Macon on the inside, but I had a gap exiting the corner and held it to the line! If David was on my wheel going into the final corner… I think he could have had that one. ❤

    • @plekavich
      @plekavich Рік тому

      This one had a different feel for sure. When Kruegler and Sheridan got away, we knew it was on us to reel that back. At first we just tried to keep it steady and pull the whole group up to them. When that started to break down, I took a shot of bridging up solo...it took a lap and when I finally caught on, they both sat up 🥴. That was a bummer but was hopeful we'd have some fresh legs ready for a counter. When the four of you got away at the end, I think the field was pretty satisfied that all the bigger teams had representation, so we just tried to stay forward in case anyone solo tried a flier or to shut down the gap. In the end, glad the four of you were able to stay out and stoked for David. it would have been absolute chaos catching you guys into the last corner.
