Bryan Park Crit #13 - Penultimate Race of the Summer
Переглядів 92День тому
Lots of break variations. No one seemed satisfied with any of the groups A small group of 5 was able to sneak away with 2 laps to go. Macon was able to hold on to 5th and David was 3rd from the field

Scheduling for this one got a bit messy. - 35-39 and 40-44 age groups were originally supposed to be separate races. - 2 days out, they were combined. - About an hour before race, rain started coming down and there was a crash delay during the womens race right before us. - During staging, race directors gave us a choice of keeping the 2 groups combined and racing full hour, or going back to sp...

First lap and a bit more out of 4 total Heat and Humidty were brutal After ~2.5 laps, I stopped sweating and started to get chills. I knew that wasn;t good and tried to get the body tempt down, but at the top of one of the climbs I fell off the back. From that point on I was solo for the last 20miles. I caught and passed one other dropped rider from my field and did everything I could just to k...

Break of 4 went up the road and things calmed down. Sent a flyer to see if I could sneak away for 5th with 2 to go but blew up pretty quickly. RIP.

Break of 3 got away when Macon got a little too sendy into party corner. After that, tried everything possible to rally the pack to help pull it back. When that wasn't working, tried a couple attacks. DT and Cutaway were like shadows and kept any chase or bridge from going anywhere. On to the next one....

Messed up the front cam so rear only. Heat and doubling up on day 2 finally caught up with me. Tried to stay off the back but I burned all my matches in the Masters Race earlier. Lasted around 40 out of 60 mins

Spent laps 2-5 off the front. Was hoping a few guys would bridge and then we could work together but no luck. Spent a bunch of energy trying to bring back 2 pair of flyers last 2 laps. Seemed like none of the other teams that missed wanted to help and the the teams with guys up the road did a good job of disrupting the front. 10th 35 and 16th overall

Brutal heat. Tried to just conserve energy as much as possible and just make it to the finish.

How Much Does your Bike Weigh Phil? Cheers 🖖🇬🇧
somewhere close to 16lbs
Well Done Chaps 🖖🇬🇧
Butttter
You guys got a lot of help from the Cutaway blockade with 2 to go. I threw away any chance of a final sprint just to break through, but nobody followed. I don't know how 20+ guys all thought they'd be the last 2 people to score points.
Ill take any blockade I can get
Dang...Why were people not giving serious chase to catch as soon as Macon went down?. You did a bunch of work, but that gets frustrating when other people get complacent or cannot see who is blocking up front.
Thanks for recording and taking the time to put this up!
Great job working together.
Lol @ you taunting Noel about the break.
The kid can smash.
Dang. Glad we get to laugh about it. But how is the poison ivy?
No poison ivy. Just some scratches from the thorny vines I got tangled in.
@@plekavich That's a relief. Have a great race tonight.
That picture is gold! I didn't catch it on video and I had no idea what you were talking about later in the race. I can't even see you on my footage. You were camouflaged deep into the woods. I'm glad you're alright and nice save!
Thanks man. The whole thing was fully captured in photos, start to finish. I posted them on my strava yesterday. Glad everyone was able to check up behind me.
Nice work!
You probably save that in 1/100 times. Good job and very lucky! 👍
Whoever designed this course needs their head examined. The fact that riding on the sidewalk between those bollards and light pole is allowed is just nuts! Even dry, this course is unsafe.
Thank you for the opportunity to judge my form in full-screen as I religiously hold your wheel. :D
Great race!
I hate this race. Weather seems to always suck, and the roads have too many painted lines, manhole covers in narrow spots.
This was my first one. I knew I was in for a bit of a mess, but luckily made it out without hitting the deck. Will definitely be back and hopefully get to race on some dry tarmac
@@plekavich glad you enjoyed it
all the knee high socks is a bit cringe. marginal gains ftw :)
Great video man, that was a wild one. How'd you do the picture in picture?
Thanks! Its a 2 step process for the videos. First is add rear cam footage with VSDC video editor and then Garmin Virb Edit to add the metrics overlay
Damn missed this again,dammit
This is crazy!
thanks for the video! was able to find myself a handful of times lol
Hi Phil! I love your Cycling videos! Watching your videos make my indoor trainig a lot more fun and less boring! I just bought a GoPro 12 with a Chest mount. Sadly, when I visited the footage after my metric century today. I sadly didn't get any of the views I liked. The camera angle was shooting my handlebars only :( I am so sad and frustrated but hey, is early in the season here in Central New York. Hope for more and better days to come! This is my third year of cycling and I have been doing very well! So far I've been on a streak of doing 6 weeks of 200 miles! Hope it keeps going! Maybe some day I will visit Virginia (I think that is where you are located?) Hope to do a few events this year. Would love to do a Gran Fondo. I was thinking of doing the Maryland Gran Fondo since that is in SEPTEMBER 15, 2024. Keep riding and stay safe! Might be thinking of using the helmet mount for my GoPro.
Thanks for sharing this race footage. Good luck on your next race.
Nice curb jump.
Hell yeah
Where is this?
Group departs from Shiplock Park in Richmond. Then 2 or 3 laps of this segment depending on daylight strava.app.link/otE7zrSzlIb
Thanks for the video. You were on a perfect before the last turn. Good race. Good job trying to get the breakaway back. I was there helping too.
Phil, what software do you use?
I use free VSDC Editor to do add the rear cam view. Then just Garmin Virb to do the stat overlays....its barely hanging on by a string to be functional since Garmin doesn't support or update it anymore, but it gets the job done
As always, thanks for posting the video.
Of course. Congrats on the Win!
What a classically crashy start to this season so far. Nice results though Phil - Ryan Edwards
Beautiful move Phil! And great footage too. Looking forward to seeing more.
Great job Phil, I think you did a majority of work in that break!
Thanks for soft peddling after my attack!
It was a great move! Talking to your teammate afterwards and heard about your crash. Hope the recovery goes well🙏
How are you so fit right now??
Great racing and video! What was your average watts for the race?
207W Avg - 227W NP Efforts were very spikey. 13mins spent coasting and 12mins spent above 400W 😬
@@plekavich thanks for the reply! very strong numbers, how much do you weigh if you don’t mind me asking? it definitely seems like a fun crit, would like to do it later this year!
150lbs. Its an exciting course for sure. The whole weekend event is a ton of fun!
@@plekavich yea you’re pushing out watts bro! i’m definitely looking forward to it 🫡
I appreciate y'all jumping on the front and refusing to be managed!
Man, that was a fun one! And weird, lol. I didn't have my camera running this race because, frankly, I was feeling pretty sh*t. Sick for a week after Chesapeake and hadn't ridden since. We put the GoPro on Kruegler, thinking he’d be the guy up there for our team result this week. Getting the win this time was a surprise. I couldn’t believe it! And honestly, I was just as excited to see David cross the line in second. He’s been working hard all year- it’s always great seeing guys like him have their day. First of many, I’m sure. Hope you don't mind me sharing our race report here! _____ The first 30 mins of the race were pretty cagey, huh? Not a lot of initiative from Cutaway compared to other weeks. Between the heat, humidity, and just being on the downslide from the season's peak, it didn't seem like many folks were itching for a hard day. Some weeks it seems folks don't like fully committing to a breakaway that Cutaway isn't in, but we were really worried about getting caught out tonight. Sweetspot were doing a great job of keeping numbers at the front. More than a few times, it felt like if a move were to go, we'd need to do a lot of work to make it across. In the last half, I made it my job to keep you guys in check. The way you were stacking the front and letting your guys float off occasionally when most of our team was further back put a lot of work on my plate. When our final breakaway got the initial gap, I was so nervous seeing the gap going out. I was hosed! Towards the end of the race, I was emptying my tank marking all of you guys, while everyone else on the team was in great position behind- around 10th wheel. From 6 to 4 to go, I tried stringing it out out of the corners and easing up going into the downhill stretch before the final corner. The thinking was to create a perfect opportunity for the team to counter. I was close to my limit the last time, and when I sat up, I realized someone opened the gap and let us float off. 😵💫 Brandon (BikeFit) and I accelerated out of "party corner" simultaneously on opposite sides of the road, so we were both a little cooked when Macon and David started rotating through. He tried to force me into the paceline ahead of him, but frankly, I was cooked! I kinda forced his hand, opening up a little gap, but thankfully he bit the bullet and ended up chasing Macon (solo) and David (sweet spot) for almost half a lap. Going into 2-to-go, I tried using what I had left to pull hard on the uphills to keep the speed high without giving anyone else in the break a significant rest. The gap wasn’t huge, so I didn’t want to create a situation where there was too much confusion for our team about when or if to chase/ sprint in the last lap. But I needed to rest as much or more than everyone else to have a chance. I knew Macon likes to go long from the break, and he was also the only solo guy in the move, so I figured he'd be the most motivated to stay away- I had my head on a swivel going into the last lap looking for him. He attacked on the downhill going into party corner on the opposite side as Brandon and David, so I jumped hard to get to him and barely braked in time to take the corner. He kept the power down until just after that riser on the backstretch. I opened it up early, going into the hill before the final corner to keep my speed high. Worst case scenario would have been David jumping me before the corner and needing to accelerate on the hill to get into his draft. Keeping my speed high and going long and steady felt like my only shot, no pop left... I’m not sure if there wasn’t room for Brandon and David after I squeezed past Macon on the inside, but I had a gap exiting the corner and held it to the line! If David was on my wheel going into the final corner… I think he could have had that one. ❤
This one had a different feel for sure. When Kruegler and Sheridan got away, we knew it was on us to reel that back. At first we just tried to keep it steady and pull the whole group up to them. When that started to break down, I took a shot of bridging up solo...it took a lap and when I finally caught on, they both sat up 🥴. That was a bummer but was hopeful we'd have some fresh legs ready for a counter. When the four of you got away at the end, I think the field was pretty satisfied that all the bigger teams had representation, so we just tried to stay forward in case anyone solo tried a flier or to shut down the gap. In the end, glad the four of you were able to stay out and stoked for David. it would have been absolute chaos catching you guys into the last corner.
7:18 love this part 🤣
You caught my moment of ignominious defeat. I was *so* close, but when that bell rang my heart sank.
I was toast coming through there as well. I couldn't see myself getting across that gap on my own. Only way I did was to hop on the Noel/Sean train and hope they made it up.
But you worked hard when YOU got up to the break! It was a strange group, but great fun and training.@@plekavich
You too! Wishing I could replay those last couple laps. All good training though💪🏻. That's the first time I've ever seen the main field let a big group of ~10 completely go clear up the road.
Thanks for posting.
Great job! I didn't notice there was still a few riders out front. Thought you were going for the win, which was exciting!
Thanks! Yea 3 guys were way up the road. So this sprint was for 4th. Guy in front of me cramped and I did everything I could to make sure I didn't end up in the ditch😬
@@plekavich - ahhh that explains it. I pegged the guy behind you to attack early and then the guy in front of you sorta veered into the lane and then just stopped pedaling. I was super confused. Good on you for using your outside voice. Ha.
😈😈😈
Those attacks were nasty. Should have known something was up when I didn't see any of you at the front for a bit. Keep the spice coming 🌶
Glad to come back to your videos for trainer motivation - these keep me pedaling faster than the TdF over the last few weeks! Monster attack and looked liked it would stick for a while!
Gah!! Helluva race right there. I am MOTIVATED for this Tuesday!
lol you madman. Hell of an attack!
Always gettin the Noel carnage 🤷🏻♂️ what happened in that final corner? Micah was fast with them reflexes.
Not totally sure to be honest. Thought I felt someone on my inside and just wasn't set up for the corner at that speed. Redemption race tonight
You were a great leader on your team Phil! Loved how much you reiterated the plan to your crew. You guys had numbers and big players up the road. Way to keep the team focussed.
Thanks for protecting us!!!
Nice ride Phil!
Thanks man. It was a fun one for sure. Good luck this weekend!
