Sailing round Mull 15 - 21 June 2024
A wonderful week sailing on the WEst Coast out of Craobh Haven near Oban. An Elan Inpression 434 Countess Of Sleat.
Crew was my dad ( 91), Sir Chay Blyth, Keith Redshaw, Peter Neville and myself as skipper.
Day one up to Oban for a night wth a great meal ashore and the following day we by chance met Lewis Haig skipper of OYT boat which was one of Chay's in the past and sailed as LG the sponsor. A great chat with the young crew.
Day two a potter over to Loch Spelve to pick up some fresh mussels for later and then headed up the Sound Of Mull to Lochaline where a wonderful picturesque marina has been built. The marina is next to a sand mine on what was an ancient tropical beach and there they mine the finest sand in the world for making optical instruments.
Day 3 Up the Sound to Tobermory ( Balamory) and berthed up in a super marina.
Day 3 50 NM to Loch Tarbert on Jura via Iona and Staffa ( Fingal's Cave). Blue sky and sunshine the arrival at Loch Tadrbert Jura was just breathtaking with the majestic mountains the Paps Of Jura. On the anchor with one other yachtthe following day we took the boat up an incredible natural canal carved out by the ice age. At the top of the canal is a 25m deep sink hole.
Day 4 Off through Sound Of Islay to Craighouse on Jura for groceries then over to Gigha to tie up on a pontoon and dine at The Boat House - a Michelin Restaurant.
Day 5 in overcast skies brightening up as the day went on up to Tayvallich on Loch Sween the most beautiful natural harbour. Peter's partner Shona kayaked out with some champagne and glasses to mark Peter's 66th birthday. On the pontoon for the night and a great meal at Tayvallich inn.
Day 6 set off up Sound Of Jura to Craobh past Dorus Mor and Corryvreckan past George Orwell's house on Jura.
Lots of dolphins, a singular puffin, guillimots, gannets, a white tailed eagle, a heron etc etc.
With high expectations of west coast sailing it did not disappoint.

Apparently they've been successful in sinking a few sailboats over the past few years. Somehow, nobody was injured after the boats sank. I would of had a heart attack out of sheer terror.

Attack where? Remember it's their home not ours. If they wanted to attack. You and your boat, would be at the bottom of the ocean. They can put a hole in your hull, in a split second. It's the same pod on that route. They're top Apex predators, beautiful, gentle, and have never put a scratch on a human in the wild. They have been biting rudders and spinning sailboats around. A 35 ft regular boat like mine, that does approx 45 knots. They've swam with me 3 times, and never bothered my boat. I think other sailboats, have thrown flares, shot spear guns, and if that happened. I can't say I blame them. Someone has done something to piss that pod off. They have killed 4 people only in captivity. And I have no sympathy when they're taken from their family, and put in a swimming pool. If you were attacked, you would've known real quick.. 🐳 🌊🙏

I seen another video where they actually were attacking the boat, not to sink it but I think they were trying to tell them something. It was also in the same area off the coast of Portugal. I believe the electronics effect the whales in a negative way. That’s not for sure but why else would they do this?

These animals should be able to be deterred bye some means. Maybe if you used a sound that would make them go away. Like a high pitch. Drop a speaker in the water and make a loud high pitch sound. If we do not find a way to deter these animals, i fear that someone is going to get hurt.

That was not aggressive Orca behavior... I have been on my yacht 50 meters away from 4 Orca ripping a skate apart. Those animals are so unbelievably powerful. This encounter was not aggressive, regardless of how the crew reacted to it. They were playing with the floaty bendy thing and surfacing to have a look. It was not aggressive at all...

Apparently these Iberian orcas are doing this a lot. Definitely agressive. They waste way too many calories for it to be anything else. This sort of behavior is unheard of from every other group of orcas we know about. You can find dozens of reports like this. And there are only about 50 orcas of this variety alive.

Orcas beg for fish. In fishing boats, this behavior is rewarded by throwing some fish overboard. Because there is no doorbell on a boat banging against the ship. If there were enough fish they wouldn't do this... but overfishing, and various poisons in the sea means less fish.

Smart Orca studying boat, while eyeing the humans. They Identify the rudder as a key ‘fin’ that can disable the boat. Like Grizzly bear. Orca, are also named “whale-killers”, and not without cause. They are huge wild predators. So whether playing or hunting during these encounters. It is moot. Either way it is life-threatening behavior to the humans onboard the boat if they disable the rudder at sea. I wonder if an underwater speaker could be lowered into the water for emitting painful sounds that would stop this behavior without physically harming the “whale-killer” (Orca).

  • @Mithril_Antimarr
    @Mithril_Antimarr 2 роки тому

I suspect a member of their pod was hit by a boat and they are probably looking for payback, not as safe travelling in a small boat near Portugal / Spain these days, this has happened before and a weaker hulled ship would have sprung a leak and possibly sunk. There is also the possibility that they were trying to flip your boat so you end up in the water, if they ever learn how to do that the casualties could be considerable, orcas may not enjoy eating people but that wouldn't stop them from killing in revenge. The footage obviously did not capture the full incident and it is worth remembering that ramming whales is a big part of how they kill them. It is telling that this behaviour is only done by 1 pod in that part of the world.

In this world we accept that anything at all *_might_* have happened, but find it wise to require evidence before acknowledging that it did. In this specific context, there's plentiful evidence that people are not on the Orca menu, and none that they are. Does this mean that no Orca can ever kill and eat a human? No, of course not: Orcas are apex predators and a particularly hungry orca may decide to make an exception of you. But it's clearly very unlikely, and to suggest that a whole bunch of them would attack a boat in order to eat its contents seems contrary to the evidence. Don't disappoint me now. When they constantly hit the rudder they can make a hole in the boat (the rudder is a hull-through mechanisme) causing the boat the flood within like 5 minutes. You will be swimming for your life to your liferaft and hoping those creatures wont treat that vehicle the same as they did do the boat; Add the fact that you are 4-5 hours away from shore (if you still had the original boat) including waves, container vessels and - of course - the nice, AMAZING, orcas swimming beneath you. Maybe hitting the life raft and killing you by drowning you would probably not have a nice time. So, indeed WOW Amazing experience. ....
