WELCOME to all the new subscribers to Lost Arts of Nature!
I thought I would film this little video to chat to you about why I called this channel Lost Arts of Nature, and to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has joined me here! I am so happy that you are here! It has been so lovely to connect with everyone who left comments on my last video. I was really happy to see how many people were interested in drop spinning! There's nothing more I love to do than cozy up in front of the woodburner with some rolags and my drop spindle, watching all the colours blend together as I spin. There is just one Drop Spinning Kit left in my Etsy shop at the time of publishing this video, so if you would like one, pop over and grab it. I will be re-stocking them but it won't be for another week or so at least.

And to those of you who signed up to Patreon, a big THANK YOU! Joining me there helps me to keep producing videos here. So if you feel inclined to take a look, here is the link:

Just yesterday I published a little update on the book I am currently reading "The Clan of the Cave Bear", and today (Friday) there is a behind-the-scenes glimpse into making wool fairies and packing up drop spinning kits.

DROP SPINNING tutorial. Learn how to use a DROP SPINDLE to spin your own yarn!
Переглядів 3 тис.14 днів тому
Hello! In this video, I sit in the Autumn sunshine in the woods to show you how to spin yarn on a drop spindle. I have put together these kits from drop spindles made by my husband from wood from our own forest here in West Wales. There are different wool options to choose from, including some of my very own hand-dyed wools, and some natural colours from my friend's Shetland sheep. The wool is ...

Hello everyone, I spent a lovely time on Saturday doing some wet-felting and I decided to turn the camera on and show you my process. Like I say in the video, this isn't a tutorial (that will be coming soon!) but I just thought you may be interested to see a little more of my method of wet-felting. Hi Marie. I'm also a smallholder on 14 acres in Nth Cumbria. Started from just rank pasture, it's now woodland and orchard and I'm about to coppice my second 'cant' of sweet chestnut for building and firewood.....exhausting and heavy work, so I have to make sure my woodstove's banked up for regular breaks. I do wattle&daub as you'll find in your book, as I've clay, sand, hay and hazel in abundance. The old skills need revival urgently as there's big changes on the way. Keep making videos 🙏

      @spindelnett6315 so lovely to read your comment, and I absolutely agree. It's so important to keep these skills going. Sounds like you have a wonderful place! I'd love to do some wattle and daub one day. And yes woodstoves! We find it is a constant job to keep the firewood flowing! My husband recently did a coppicing and green woodworking course locally with Coppicewood College. He learnt so much which we now apply to our own little patch of forest. It's such an honour to be a guardian of woodland. So glad you're here ✨️

    I used the mush left over after pressing apples for cider, added water and sugar to it and fermented it to vinegar. No real need to take the stalks or seeds or blossom ends off, they don't contribute anything bad to the taste. And the amount of cyanide in the seeds is so minimal you'd need to highly concentrate it to be dangerous. Oh, and stainless steel is fine to use with vinegar, it's what's used in instustrial fermentation processes and is fine to way higher acid levels than you're going to get from acetic acid. But definitely avoid anything that could tarnish, any steel that's not stainless, and any aluminum.

      Haha! They actually don't affect me too badly afterwards (as in, I don't react to the bites) It's just annoying at the time they are biting me! But if I do get other insect bites, I use a Calendula Balm (made from beeswax and calendula-infused olive oil) It works a treat!

      @lostartsofnature6113 ah, good to know that calendula works for insect bites - thank you! I wonder what keeps the twisted fibers together? Usually when you twist something it just untwists back

    • @catzkeet4860
      @catzkeet4860 13 днів тому

      Wool has tiny hooks/scales on the fibres. This is what allows wool to felt to make , well, felt, and is also why wool garments unless made with super wash yarn, have to be treated very gently when wet. There's always a risk of felting with wet wool. Anyway it's these scales that allow wool a certain amount of "stickiness" that means it holds together during spinning. This is why most newbie spinners start with wool, because it's the easiest. Alpaca, bamboo or silk (to give a few examples of non beginner fibres)are much trickier to spin because they don't really hold together like wool does(alpaca does a bit, but not as much as wool)They're mostly easier spun on a wheel where they don't have to take the weight of the spindle.

    • @catzkeet4860
      @catzkeet4860 9 днів тому

      @@Амин-т4х I just realized I hadn't really answered your question completely. As to why wool doesn't untwist in the spinning, it WILL if you release tension, however when a wool single(single spun thread) is combined with another single and plied, they hold because partly wool is sticky, and partly because a plied yarn consists of 2 or more singles, all spun in the same direction, which are then twisted together in the OPPOSITE direction. They both try to unwind and because they're going opposite ways, it locks the twist into the yarn. It's incredibly ingenious. Ancient humans were very smart.

    Hello! I just subscribed to your channel and I am so thankful to have seen your teaching! I just discovered this craft about a week ago and I have ordered 2 drop spindles and have not received either of them yet so 2 nights ago I got my daughter to take me to the craft store and I bought the materials to make myself a drop spindle. Got it together tried to spin some wool and it was compacted so I tried to floof it out and it was a thick glob of twisted wool. So the wool I ordered was in these little multicolored packets and tightly packed. I watched more videos and thought I need hand carders to fluff it out and make rologs so it will be easier to pull out the wool. While watching your video you gave an up close view of spinning the spindle and I could see how much twist you need and slowly let out more wool stop and twist a little more. Anyway, no other video I’ve watched gave that close a view where I could really see how much twist to make like you demonstrated. Thank you so much because I was so frustrated and ready to give up. I’ve ordered my hand carders and will have to find patience somehow although I’m 65 years old and I doubt I’ll ever find it. 😂. I look forward to watching more of your videos! 🥰

      I'm not sure what part of the world you're in, but you might want to be wary of "packets" in a multipurpose craft store - they're probably meant for felting and may already be mostly felted. You may be able to get some semi-local combed top or roving (much better for beginners) on etsy, or if you're in the US, fiberlovediary, the spinnery store, the woolery, or paradise fibers.

      @@Which-Craft Thank you for the information. I kinda wondered if that may be the problem too. I received my hand carders today and I also received 1 pound of Corriedale roving. I haven’t had a moment to open it up yet. I purchased it from Revolution Fibers. I live in Virginia USA. I wish I could find someone nearby that I can go get a fleece from after I know what I’m doing…🤣 It would have to be washed outside though. I need to learn more about wool. I got the Corriedale wool roving because that was recommended for learning to spin with the drop spindle. I had no idea there are so many different types of sheep! 😊 I better let you go or I will babble too much. Anything you want to alert me to that could help me I will be most appreciative. You have a wonderful evening. 😊

    Hi.Thanks so much for this video. I have been wanting to try spinning on a drop spindle. I did not see the kit you are mentioning in your ETSY shop. Maybe I am checking too soon? Would very much like to purchase the kit and am so happy I will receive a handmade spindle.

      @@tammyemanuel5036 hi there, thank you for your lovely comment. I love the thought of these as a mobile for a newborn ❤️ It might be an idea to explore making these as a smaller size and then hanging them on different length threads so they are at different heights. You could either hang them in a line or in a circle. That could look really pretty 😍
