      I was wondering why they giggled at the dramatic scenes and got all quiet and serious during the comedy parts. I gave up after 10 minutes.

    The story of Oz comes from the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and 13 sequels he wrote. It has been the starting point for so many variations and take-offs of the story (in particular this MGM movie and Wicked), but while they all share similar points, they vary all over the place in the overall story. Trying to reconcile them with each is impossible, unless you want a headache. The novel and all the variations on it, but the MGM movie, have Oz a real place. MGM felt audiences of the day could not accept this as real. Because it is her dream in this version, we have the whole Kansas sequence where we see the real people Dorothy will meet in Oz. On the other hand, there is no real backstory possible for the MGM characters as Ozians, although we might want to know how Miss Gulch or Prof. Marvel wound up where they were. Book Oz had FOUR witches - MGM combined the (unnamed) Good Witch of the North with Glinda, the Good Witch of the SOUTH. The William Denslow illustrations that were part of the original novel (and thus reflect Baum's ideas) do not show either witch like a bubbly ditzy pink-chiffon Billie Burke version. The north one is just a kindly grandmother in appearance. Glinda is a beautiful sophisticated woman with red hair. In the book, the two evil witches were not sisters, and so the idea that the ruby/silver slippers should have gone to the surviving witch (and thus that Dorothy somehow stole them) is not "canon." Baum wanted to write American fairy tales, so he avoided all the typical attributes of medieval witches. He even included have good ones, too. None of his witches could fly, neither by broomstick nor bubble. His wicked witch of the west was drawn like a stereotypical gypsy fortune teller. She carried an umbrella (for obvious reasons). She had only good eye, which was weirdly a "telescopic" eye, which enabled her to see Dorothy from miles away. She doesn't haunt Dorothy from Munchkinland on - we only hear from her a good partway through the book. Most of all, she wasn't green. But Margaret Hamilton's appearance and performance was so iconic, it overshadowed Baum's version for all future stories that feature Oz (except the Wiz). Animals in Oz do speak, even Toto eventually in the sequels, but they only do animal things. They don't teach nor nurse or whatever, and so the Wizard is not trying to talk away their rights (and thus in the books, no righteous cause for an Elphaba to champion). Book wizard is just a gentle humbug, not the evil plotter of Wicked nor the woman-chasing con man of Disney's Oz, the Great & Powerful. Baum's Oz was not notable for the really wacky characters he created, with his silly logic and charming puns. For many Oz fans (myself included), Disney's 1985 Return to Oz is the closest to the Baum idea (even though some consider it too dark and scary). This is one of the few adaptations of the sequels, not the main story, that is, the second and third, Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. (Would love to see your reaction to this movie.)

    Just a suggestion - you had the movie playing at the same volume as when the two of you were talking. I found it impossible at times to hear your comments with this in the background - and what I could hear, you guys were making some REALLY insightful and funny remarks. Perhaps if you had the microphone on which you are recording much closer to you than to the movie? Might also be possible to pause the movie when you go to speak, but since I have never done a video like this, I have no idea how practical this would be.

    The characters from Wicked turn into the characters in the Wizard of Oz. Fyero becomes the Scarecrow. (Compare Scarecrow's and Fyero's dance moves, and the lyrics to Dancing through Life... Life is painless, when you're brainless. And Elphaba tells Fyero to, Get stuffed." Boq Woodsman becomes the Tinman, and of course the little rescued lion cub is the Cowardly Lion.

    • @SethRGray
      @SethRGray 21 день тому

      that would make no sense as the East witch is sister to the West witch (i.e. we've already met her). And the South witch apparently doesn't exist in the Wickedverse as GLINDA herself is the witch of the south in the Oz books.

    The original book is a lot darker, and not a comedy. Fiyero is married (not to Glinda) and has 3 kids. He is not the Scarecrow, (Boq is not the Tin Woodsman either) and ends up being captured by the Wizard’s guard while being tortured to death. Elphaba then shows up at the his castle with her’s and Fiyero’s illegitimate son, Liir (who’s also main protagonist of the book’s sequel “Son of a Witch”). Even though the widow is angry she lets them stay with her. In doing so she and her children are arrested and never heard from again. Also everyone is bisexual and Glinda is in love with Elphaba, not Fiyero. The two of them participate in an animal orgy. And Glinda tries to tell Elphaba that she loves her, but Elphaba rejects her.

  • @zoephotoart
    @zoephotoart Місяць тому

    White person here, so take my comment how you will, but I do think Glinda is definitely a villain lol The problem is that this story is constrained by the original wizard of oz story, so Elphaba has to "die" and disappear or they've destroyed the original story which would have pissed a lot of people off too. So it's always a bit of a tragedy, turning the idea of what's wicked on its head. I think different people find all different things to resonate with - especially because Cynthia Erivo is giving such a deep, subtle, heartbreaking, and more intimate performance that adds a lot more than what you can get from a stage show. Part 2 is definitely more challenging for them to pull off but after Part 1 I have faith 😅

    • @VirtualBookClubGirlies
      @VirtualBookClubGirlies Місяць тому

    • @heidifedor
      @heidifedor Місяць тому

      I always interpret it that while Glinda is singing, “no one mourns the wicked”, she is actually singing about herself in the guilt. She feels guilty believing that she’s caused the death of Elphapa and Fyero, as well as the death of Nessa, and also for what happens to Boq.

  • @zoephotoart
    @zoephotoart Місяць тому

    I totally disagree with the assessment that people aren't seeing themselves in Elphaba - this is totally her story, and the whole point is to explore how someone painted as a villain really wasn't. It's definitely meant to be cathartic for anyone who feels "other." Glinda doesn't get what she wants in the end and is definitely not presented as a hero although she improves a bit.

    • @VirtualBookClubGirlies
      @VirtualBookClubGirlies Місяць тому

      Well, Glinda got what she THOUGHT she wanted. But she didn't get satisfaction from it. We get that. It's still hard to watch Elphaba's ending though.

    • @zoephotoart
      @zoephotoart Місяць тому

      @ yeah it's definitely bittersweet (but this was all adapted from a villain character so it would be hard to happy ending it completely.) At least she gets to leave Oz with the person she loves, and Ginda is left alone.

      "I hear her soul is so unclean, pure water will melt her" isn't any weirder than, "I hear she has an extra eye that always remains awake, I hear that she can shed her skin as easily as a snake" in the real world plenty of weird rumors get made up that seemingly have no basis in reality, or we can never find their true origin anyway.

    What if the MIY was the reason for young Victor's massacre to happen? The Boy in White shared knowledge to Christopher... Knowledge comes with a cost = man in yellow What if the BIW sharing knowledge to Christopher ended up summoning him ? As we seen Victor's flashback, BIW was telling Christopher the story inside the church in town, Tabitha/Jade & Jim were in the forest, thats why the MIY appeared there, but with Christopher in the church , maybe the man in yellow showed up in town, and the massacre happened
