Alien Perspective: What “Starman”' teaches us about being human
Forty years later, “Starman” is a hidden gem and I strongly recommend it to everyone regardless of your taste in movies. It’s a great road trip movie, and you’ll enjoy the ride as the film explores themes of humanity, curiosity, love, and understanding from an outsider's perspective. Both Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen are fantastic here. Make sure to check this one out.

Scarlett Johansson’s haunting performance can’t save “Under the Skin”
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 місяці тому
Scarlett Johansson is brilliant in “Under the Skin.” She deliver’s a haunting performance as an alien being that takes the form of a beautiful woman in order to lure men to her home to be captured. But this film isn’t for everyone. Director Jonathan Glazer received tons of praise from movie critics for this ambitious and experimental film. And he certainly deserves credit here. We need more fil...
Sydney Sweeney flexes her box office power with “Immaculate”
Переглядів 4513 місяці тому
Sydney Sweeney’s star power seems to grow with each new project she takes on. So far in 2024 she’s already had two surprise hits at the box office fueled primarily by her popularity and willingness to do the work to promote a film’s release. This makes her much more than our modern blonde bombshell celebrity . . . she’s building a reputation as a box office draw who can be a leading lady in Hol...
Eddie Murphy leads talented cast in “Beverly Hills Cop”

Eddie Murphy was a big star in the early 80s as a regular on Saturday Night Live and leading roles in movies like “48 Hours” and “Trading Places,” but his starring role as detective Axel Foley in “Beverly Hills Cop” made him a superstar in 1984. "Beverly Hills Cop" is a defining movie of the 80s with Eddie starring as Axel Foley, a brash and street-smart police detective who works in Detroit an...
“No Hard Feelings” - An R-Rated comedy that deserves credit for trying
Переглядів 3,8 тис.4 місяці тому
With “No Hard Feelings,” the producers lean into the void of R-Rated comedies with a movie marketed completely around its raunchy theme and R-Rating. And they somehow managed to land Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role. While the film isn’t perfect, everyone involved from the writer, director, producers and the cast deserve credit here for trying. Hollywood needed a wakeup call, and hopefully we...
“The Holdovers” Cast, Plot, Overview & Review

“The Holdovers” is a fun and bittersweet holiday film built on an excellent script and fantastic performances. Paul Giamatti leads the way with an Oscar-worthy performance in the lead role. Giamatti was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar but lost out to Cillian Murphy and the “Oppenheimer” wave of winners at this year’s Academy Awards. “The Holdovers” was nominated for five Academy Awards includi...
More fight scenes in “John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum”

When you have a successful franchise, you give the audience what it wants. The producers of the John Wick franchise have certainly embraced this philosophy, as each installment continues the action-packed formula from the first film. That works when you have the iconic lead character played by Keanu Reeves and a stylized world you can continue to reveal with each installment. In “John Wick: Cha...

“RoboCop” is a biting satire of the excesses of 1980s American culture
Переглядів 4044 місяці тому
"RoboCop" is a brilliant sci-fi action movie released in 1987. The film works on so many levels, starting with a fantastic story for an action movie . . . a cyborg police officer taking on a criminal gang in futuristic, crime-ridden Detroit. At its core, “RoboCop” is a gory and intense popcorn movie with an edge. But it’s so much more than that, as the film delivers a biting satire of the exces...

"John Wick: Chapter 2" was released in 2017 with Keanu Reeves returning as the iconic assassin. With the success of the first film, there was little doubt we’d see a sequel, and "John Wick: Chapter 2" doesn’t disappoint, building on the formula that worked so well in the first film. The film builds on the stylized John Wick universe which has its own set of rules and codes of conduct that gover...
“May December” features amazing acting performances but little else

“May December” is one of those films that seems to have been made for movie critics. It’s a complex character study built around a an uncomfortable and peculiar situation. Fortunately, it has fantastic performances by Julianne Moore, Natalie ...
“American Beauty” is an excellent film despite the revisionist history

“American Beauty,” released in 1999, won the Oscar for Best Picture. It takes on the issue of dealing with a midlife crisis with biting and hilarious social commentary. It ramps up the midlife crisis cliché to absurd levels, mixing in a number of other clichés and movie tropes along the way. Twenty-five years later we're seeing more criticism of this film, but it holds up just fine as a work of...
Keanu Reeves creates iconic hitman character with "John Wick"

The John Wick character has become iconic, and it all started in 2014 when the original film was released. Keanu Reeves was perfectly cast in the title role as the badass hitman out for revenge. I read the book first, so I was a bit disappointed with how Moocher was portrayed in the movie. Also they left out the most memorable part in the book with Moocher, when his boss said "Punch the clock, shorty" Moocher deliberately wraps a towel around his fist and punched the time clock off the wall and walked out.

I agree Paul Dooley was brilliant and hilarious in the movie. I get choked up every time in the scene where Mr. Stohler sits in his Cadillac listening to the Little 500 and gets excited hearing how well Dave is doing before finally slamming the door shut and peeling out of the used car lot to go see the race. The winner of best supporting actor in 1979 was Christopher Walken for The Deer Hunter. I've seen Breaking Away many, many times, but I've never bothered to watch The Deer Hunter.

Like the comment below and the three replies, I have nothing but praise and fond memories about Paul Dooley as an actor, and also as a genuine down-to-earth guy. I was on a shuttle bus from one of the outlying parking lots at the Los Angeles Airport that dropped passengers off at the various LAX airline gates. The bus was very empty, maybe just three or four others sitting up front, and leaned forward and across the aisle. He was sitting quietly and alone - no newspaper or book, and cell phones were still a few years off - and I said, "Mr. Dooley, I'm sorry to interrupt but I just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your work during the past few years." Breaking Away and Pretty in Pink had been released, along with a movie called O.C. and Stiggs, that was based on what may have been one of THE greatest all-time National Lampoon stories; without going in to details the magazine-to-film adaptation wasn’t a very good fit. I complemented his work in Pink and Breaking, and added, "You play a wonderful and believable dad." His reply: "Well, i AM a dad." And writing that response, I heard it in that distinctive voice of his.. I asked if he'd read the National Lampoon story, and he said, "Oh yeah...funny stuff." We were at his gate, and I told him, "Have a nice flight, and thank you again." He smiled, nodded his head and was gone. He was exactly what we always hope people we admire turn out to be: a class act.

All actors unknown except for Johansson. An effort to show aliens in the process of invading the Earth, using human skin as a disguise & Johansson's character developing an excessive interest in humans & how they live set off, somewhat predictability, by a sexual encounter with a human causing her to go awol & disrupting the plans of the aliens. There is disorentation for the audience when the skinning process is shown with no familiar points of reference. You have no clue what your looking at sometimes. The Johansson aliens failure to stick to the plan exposes the invasion & the final scenes are of the humans starting to fight back🇨🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇺🇦🇮🇱

I watched the film on a recommendation, and was very disappointed by its overly 'arty' approach - or rather, it seemed to be trying *very* hard to be arty, but ended up making some truly baffling and nonsensical choices in its needlessly ambiguous presentation. I also think the use of random passers-by for the victims was more of a gimmick than a sound casting strategy. When I later read the book it's based on, I was disappointed all over again. If only the film had followed the book more closely, it could have been far more interesting, as you get to know the aliens - who consider themselves to be 'people' while humans are 'lesser', not necessarily even sentient - and what they're up to on Earth is far more explicit. The main character actually has a name, rather than being 'The Female', hates herself and is in constant paint because she was *surgically* altered to look human, rather than just being a conveniently humanoid alien wearing a skinsuit.

Sure, but where is the responsibility of the federal government in creating the 2008 mess? (unnaturally low interest rates, Community Reinvestment Act that forced banks to make risky loans in the name of fairness...). This movie - while very good - puts all the blame on greedy capitalism, when in reality Wall Street was reacting to what the feds were doing.

It's hard to say why the 5th didn't take off like the first 3. I didnt ecen know there was a 5th. :)) O forgot about it with the studio's minimal advertising ....seems overall.....not just with the fifth JB film but with most Hollywood films done in the last 10 years....Hollywood has been "cheaping out" with their advertising budgets. In the early 20000's I recall HUGE ad campains e.g. for the Lord Of The Rings films, the Dark Knight Trillogy.... after 1011....something happened in Hollywood (and entertainment as a whle....oddly around the same time sax player Clarence Clemons from the E-Street Band died....it was like the music industry/film biz droped into a black hole....a-list actors/singers/bands had mostly retired or began to die....one by one....then recently a few of the legest began makng "return tours PT" e.g. Aerosmith...).... Kind of a sad time in entertainmet IMHO....we're moving away from the "movie theather going expereince" and moving to the "streaming" platform....most people don't own "home theater systems". But most can d/l film onto their flatscreens ...takes away from enjoying a film on a huge 50 foot screen, huge speakers/amps and a crowd having a good time....just not the same.... Tom Cruises latest Miion Impossible film went "stright to streaming with Paramount Plus".....which has to mean less revenue...i think too many don't want to watch films on a laptop....or even their 55" flatscreens (few can afford a 88" or larger..."dark times'''...

Well .. I can agree with you that Boogie Nights is very close to being a straight up comedy .. But there're so many other layered and nuanced elements that make it more than just that. Magnolia is an absolute pretentious mess that makes no sense .. It's editing is horrible and feels like someone who was given a bunch of money just to do whatever he wanted and threw everything and the kitchen skink at it.. But it doesn't work. There're some interesting things going on in that movie, but ultimately ends up being an overly complicated artsy fartsy pile of gobbledygook. Boogie Nights never disappoints .. Yeah, he's definitely ripping off Scorsese A LOT .. but I say. Who cares? It's brilliant. Magnolia is just a cacophony of noise in my opinion.
