169. QUEASY LISTENING: THE DARK SIDE OF “YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE”
The biggest hit single of the 1970s spent ten weeks at number one. If you weren’t alive at the time, then there’s no way to adequately describe how torturous that period truly was. Yet the deeper I dug in my research for this episode, the more nauseated I became. The tale of this song has to be heard to be believed. It is truly epically horrendous.
Here’s just a few of the many things Discograffiti O.G. Joe Kennedy and I discuss in this podcast:
* A mini-history of some of the biggest runaway hits of all time, of which this is most certainly up there;
* The weird, messed-up background of its writer and creator;
* And a seemingly never-ending tale of criminal depravity that’ll leave you slack-jawed with disbelief by the end!

I'm also a first generation Monkees fan and I'd really love to see them in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who else agree s with me❤
The Monkees where cooler and better than People gave them credit for I'll always love them they're the best ❤
Just ❤ love this thanks
Thanks for listening
The Monkees became a real band ! I think they were better than the Beatles !
How extended is the extended version of this interview?
10 minutes. It says it right there in the visual!
Extremely interesting stuff, great interview!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Michelle is awesome!
This is really great. Thanks. I could listen to Jon Wurster talk all day.

I love how Watt thought Coltrane was punk. Jazz was so incremental to the formation of punk. I always say that '68 - '69 Soft Machine blended skill, jazz and pure chaos and volume to inadvertently create the joyful noise of punk.
A realized cubist castle film would be the highlight of my life
“Gulp down the remnants of your moonshine acid and backyard psilocybin” 😭
Nice to be filled in with the background. I was buying Fugazi records; my friends in Chicago were buying Teen Beat records. I liked Grenadine, yet wasn't paying much attention then.....
Absolutely love this indepth conversation with michelle detailing her life with the mamas and papas and beyond,my favourite band ever,I fell in love with them aged 14 in 1986 I've never looked back, remember being mesmerised watching dick clark listening to california dreamin n was fixed ever since
Awesome conversation between you & Ms. Phillips. Radically frank & honest, mesmerizing, informative & seriously entertaining. Thank you for making this!

Just fucking great musician !
Thank you!
17:31 my buddy and I are huge pumpkins fans and we were saying that the other day. Monuments to an elegy makes zwan look like Siamese dream. I bought Mary star of the sea when it came out and thought I didn’t like it. I recently put the album on and I remembered all the words and really liked it. Time is weird.
10:47 I really wish I could hear that acoustic album
Maria Mc Kee would differ on the way young lovers do. It’s a great song 🎉
That's what makes horse racing, sir or madam.
Yessss. - just know this will be flair filled, funny and one to remember - great talker on The Smiths is Mr Imperioli🎉
So many tunes you guys mention that other's missed. Grazing in the Grass, My Maria? I didn't realize it was Jim. but when I listen, it's obviously Jim. Before I knew that, they were just really great songs and Jim was a big part of why. I guess that's the point...
I must say it's pretty cool you're able to interview them! I listened to their songs since "Love You" from commercials I saw years ago, then I hear them on spotfly and most of them esp Love you .is something I needed to hear as a Child, Definitely something I would have liked listen to as a Kid! altho I'm not born in the 60s . .LOL. I'm glad they're still with us too! . .Condolences to Chris though :/
Michael imperioli you're a star lived watching you in movies and sopranos now Its nice to hear this x
my kind of content
This is such a great album!! There is only 1 track I wish was cut (rock n roll candy) which is saying something!! Just to the left of the dial which adds to the charm here. Bravo.
John Phillips was the first one to Sample, that's cool. But the father of Hip/Hop, that title for most people goes to James Brown. Also Summer of Love, once again that's a matter of where you were. By the fall very few people were talking about a Summer of Love. The music is very reflective of that, it's the counterculture heartbreak. A lot of the music of Fall 67 has those themes.
Think John got lucky with them not censoring him. The powers that be had a lot they were focusing on. Vietnam was where most of their attention was. Dr. King had turned on President Johnson over Vietnam. The Anti-War Movement was threatening them and Black Power was becoming more threatening. Hippies were lower on the scale in comparison. Didn't mean they weren't a concern though.
My Step-dad a Mamas and Papas fan, he was just into the music though. Not the counterculture. He spent the 60's working as a printer in San Antonio, Texas and his dad was a cop. My mom though, she's actually from Spanish Harlem, she didn't know M & P had a version. She remembers the original, but she definitely remembers California Dreamin and Monday, Monday. Actually, The Mamas and the Papas seem to be where a lot of people in both the Black and Latino communities remember before becoming more insular. Janis Joplin finally came to fill the void in 68. For the Black community 67 was the year of James Brown.
I'm also A Safe in my Garden defender. Yes, it is sadder and more morbid, it's also what was happening. It's great that Michelle had a beautiful Summer of Love. For the rest of us it was a summer of riots. The biggest one being in Detroit, the home of Motown. It was then followed by riots in Spanish Harlem, though the news and President Johnson reported it as Harlem. My dad was caught in the middle of that one. My godmother who was nine was trapped in her basement. My mom had moved to Queens, but heard about it on the news. Then to add to the Summer of riots, Vietnam got worse. Despite all the talk of the war will be over by June. People were pissed, The Good Vibrations were gone and most people didn't even get the chance to feel them. Last but not least, this comes direct from my parents and what research I could find, the relationship between the Counterculture and the Black community was fractured. Pretty sure Hippies were no longer welcome at the Apollo and James Brown wasn't coming to Sunset Strip. It wasn't a nice time, it was never really a nice time, but now there wasn't any hiding it. Safe in My Garden is addressing that and acknowledging it. One of the few M & P songs to do that. Yeah, it's not a nice song, but it wasn't a nice moment. Then Black Power like the Hippies was mostly a youth movement. The very ones the Hippies wanted the most. They were heartbroken 💔 😥
Love the Mamas and the Papas.....especially Mama Cass!!! I adore her and her gorgeous voice!!!!
Wonder if he was using drugs daily during the episode because it sounds like a cocaine induced psychosis. Obviously schizophrenia can have similar effects so curious the extent of his drug use at the time of the killing.
I think Sanford Clark was the Arizona musician he was trying to remember.
having worked with many a mental health patient and having prescribed, and counseled them, as outpatients, as inpatients in neuropsych, this is an incredbly difficutly topic for me. . we treat depression and anxiety as identicals but they are are worlds apart. But I digress. 2. what IS mental health vs what is not? Are we ALL born with perfect minds, and ANYTHING outside of a norm is a mental health issue? What is the norm? We seem to move the norm as fits a political agenda lately. For example, many men literally have a fetish, or perversion, ie., I know because I interview them behind closed doors, and they "get off" - literally - on cross dressing, but political we want so much to be "more moral" than you we have now moved that to the "normal" section - except with extras like hring preferences etc for them. I am a common sense guy, and while one can say that the male being a woman now is being who they "Are", we can easily argue they hiding as something else instead and NOT being who they ARE. hat about evil? does it exist? or back to my original question is ANYTHING "bad" considered a disease of mental health, or can someone CHOOSE to be evil? How come the schizphrophenic guy does not obsessively plant flowers along the highway, or collect the trash, why don't they obsessively, but nicely open the door for every women they see? Instead they cover their outlets with tape because they think people are listening, they hide in the house, they collect guns or knives, etc. Why why why do they "lean" evil? why not lean good? yes there are very rare exceptions but it's not the norm. When do drugs factor in? we love to say they are "self-medicating" ....we love that validation, but again can we just as much say drugs have MADE them bad, not helped them by self medicating. i am religious, I am bible believer, along with scienctific principles, there are examples with Jesus, where one guy was ill, others guys were truly possessed by other spirits. They asked him if the guy sinned or the parents sinned, and He answered once that neither, he was going to show his power through the guy, others had many evil spirits in them, why how? I don't think we know. Its mysterious in many ways.
A couple of things: I last saw the band at Westbury when I was 13. It was also the first time I was in a limo, which my Uncle Pat provided. It was the only time I met the band. And Jules Gary) was gone. My name is pronounced ' Koh-lek-y -oh.'. The pronunciation you have is a misunderstanding that my grandfather adopted from American imagination officials when he immigrated. I am fortunate to have interviewed Pat at length prior to his passing and own many first and test pressing. I always favored the creativity of the albums over those which received air play.. I also learn to play Terry's recorder parts I still play them and have learned the backing vocals and harmonies in my old age, which are a lot of fun .
Incredible interview, I really LOVED it from start to finish!! All the people involved are so nice and full of life and humor, thank you so much for posting this jewel about one of my all-time favorite groups in pop-rock history!! Many many greetings from beautiful Italy!!❤ Sergio

Welfare bob begging for hearing aids, ick. He gambled away everything LMFAO
Another fantastic chronicle of Cory's output, can't thank you enough. I did want to float an influence that wasn't mentioned - some of the newest wand singles as of late June 2024, composed by improvising and then constructing from those sessions, have an incredibly strong late Talk Talk vibe, a la After the Flood. So looking forward to what appears from here!
What a fantastic discussion! Cory's music, which I am six blissful months into brought me to your podcast. I absolutely loved your energy and freewheeling exchange, you guys were really on the same vibe. Thank you so much!
John Phillips may be the reason why we have electronic prescriptions today.
I am so thrilled to have found this!
Wild Honey is often called r&b. Which it definitely has those elements. But, it is also psychedelic!
Are you honestly comfortable with kids listening to this review with your horrible language? If you feel the need to negatively critique the band and its recordings, that's one thing--you're certainly entitled to your opinion. However, your profane language (and that of your "band expert") is offensive and unnecessary.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha
The title of Greatest Drummer is subjective, but for me, Jim will always be number 1. Everyone cites Neil Peart, and he is absolutely incredible. John Bohnam has always been a favorite of mine, more so than Neil, but Jim….to me, no one could touch him.
John Phillips was a degenerate creep.
Wow. This is fantastic. Side note: I really like "Pacific Coast Highway" 😹 Especially the remix. Thank you for this series of interviews. So much valuable information Michelle barely touched on in her book or any other interview. I'm so grateful for this. You ask all the right questions. 🙌
