    Just going to park some info here... Mine is for a 69 TR25W, but the same stuff as most. That bottom screw to take out the cone is 11/32. But it is a narrow opening. I had to grind my socket down to fit. The cone itself has a hex base, so a 5/8" spark plug socket on a couple of extensions, and it came out easily.

    nice job! great video. I just bought a very very dirty sheldon 11 with motor mounted above. You taught me about the auto feed as I noticed mine has the slot along the screw too and the function lever. I disassembled it to carry into my house from truck. It is reassembled and running once again. I did scrape off much crud. Eventually I will try to clean up, paint, and lube the various parts. In the meantime I'm trying to figure out or learn how things work.

    Hey. Thanks for the video. I'm learning to use a lathe. The shop I'm at has a similar Sheldon 11" lathe. I am having trouble engaging the power feed with the clutch. How does the clutch know work? Are you supposed to screw the knob in to get it to engage, or do you just push/pull the knob? Possibly the lathe is quite worn. It seems like sometimes I can get it to engage and other times not. Thanks

      SWQE is the model. It roughly translates to a lathe with 11" swing, 35" between centers and plain main bearings. You can find more info on Sheldon lathes here: vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=2133&tab=3 For parts, well, I have bad news for you: basically there aren't any. These lathes aren't that dissimilar to small South Bend lathes, which you can occasionally find parts for on ebay. But there's no parts commonality. Anything you need you probably have to make yourself. But ask around your local machine shops. I know of people that traffic in Colchester parts. It could be there's someone out there that does the same for Sheldon, but I haven't found them. Good luck.

    I recommend using a wire wheel for cleaning the rust off of the metal parts i usually first use the wire wheel to clean the large amounts of rust off then let The part sit in some rust killing solution which turns The part black you can then go back over with the wire wheel and take that material off and clean it up and plate it but I do not like using media blast it basically creates a whole bunch of tiny pits in the Metal which is hard to get out

    My lathe is almost done! I was ordering oil for it and was going to use "Mobil 100772 Vactra No.2 Way Oil" for the ways but was unsure if I should use a different oil for the spindle and other oil locations, or if the vectra oil was ok as an all around oil. I checked the ISO ratings and I think its acceptable but I want to make sure I oil the lathe correctly. Finally I was wondering if you had the original manual or a PDF of the lathe. I found one but its kind of short and I was trying to unseize the tail stock and I was looking for a better diagram as I think I am just going to have to blowtorch and hammer the snot out of but I wanted to make sure I was doing it justifiably.

    • @barnyardbikes54
      @barnyardbikes54 3 роки тому

      That's the way oil I use. I haven't had any problems. I don't have a better manual than the ones that are online. The tailstock is pretty robust. But you should be able to reach up from under the lathe bed to feel what's holding it on. Mine has makeshift arrangement. Pretty much, just get that main nut free and the whole assembly should lift off.

      I'm looking back at my mcmaster carr orders. I'm pretty sure the belt I that fit were 50L560. You're good to take off the bearing caps in any situation. They are plain bearings and the spindle is located by the tension via the rear end ring. There's no precision in the bearing cap bolts. Good luck. Don't be afraid to ask anything else. Bad news: I didn't. I brazed it back together and turned the bore as true as I could. I looked into replacement but didn't find good options. There are people that deal in old machines. They might have an original part. Not for cheap if they do. But probably cheaper than having one custom hobbes. I also thought about getting a stock gear from McMaster. They have the right pitch and tooth count gear, but I was never confident it was the right pursue angle. You'd have to turn the right bore on it if it did mesh. I'd ask around at machine shops in your area. You might come up lucky. Probably expect to play a few hundred bucks. Best of luck.

    I just got one of these lathes. Looking through the maintenance guide I can see how the apron is assembled. But what is the best way to take it off? I'm terrified of damaging it as it is a lovely machine in near perfect working order as far as I can tell. I can see the portion where it latches onto the feed screw but I can't figure out how to get it off or if I need to take off the screw itself first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @barnyardbikes54
      @barnyardbikes54 4 роки тому

      Hey, Henry. Thanks for the view. I should have filmed the removal, but got halfway through the job before I thought to. It's a fairly simple process as these things go. You need to remove the lead screw first. Push out the taper pin joining the lead screw and the gearbox, then remove the lead screw bearing at the tailstock end. Then pull out the lead screw from the tailstock side, through the apron. The apron is only attached to the carriage by two 3/8" screws. Support the apron as you undo these (it's heavy, but this can be done by hand) and the apron will come away. I'm doing this from memory, so I may have forgotten something, but I think that's all there is to it. Let me know if you get stuck.

      That description sounds right. You don't need to be super gentle with these old machines. They're built very robustly (mine weights 1000lbs. This explanation seemed misleading and overly complicated. Make an electrolyte with about 1 Gal. White Vinegar, 1/2 cup Epsom Salts, 1/3 cup Sugar. You can get free zinc from old wheel weights marked Zn or from the outer cases of dry cell batteries (zinc-carbon, not alkaline). Use 1.5V batteries (or an old 5vdc cellphone charger). Note: Car batteries and car chargers are too powerful. Attach the part you want to plate to negative and the sacrificial zinc anode to positive. Before plating, charge your solution overnight with zinc at both ends. Your anode will partially disintegrate into solution. Clean and degrease your parts. When plating, rotate your part occasionally to get full even coverage or surround your part with more anodes connected together. Use almost any conductive wire to hang things. If you want to make your plated part shinier, buff it. Plate outdoors to avoid fumes. (Note, most diecast parts are made of 96% zinc and 4% aluminum which is another great source for the zinc since the aluminum will not electroplate from solution.) Also note: Boat anodes are made of zinc, magnesium, or aluminum (not just zinc). Happy plating.

      @@Spikev01 You are welcome. I've done a lot of zinc plating at home, mostly for rehabbing steel tools. Some how-to videos get a little misguided at times. BTW: I found 5lb zinc anodes on eBay for about $5 ea, so cheap! Plate slow for the best result. If you use too high a voltage and/or current the plating just wipes off. I guess I should do a video. Also, I've switched to "washing soda" for making the electrolytic rather than using Epson salts. :)

    Another question. To make the initial solution I used two zinc strips with an old sony 400mA power adapter, as I had seen in some other videos. I left them powered in the vinegar/epson/sugar solution for a few hours. After that, I unplugged the power adapter and left the setup overnight. the next morning I looked at the solution, with the zinc strips still in there, connected to the adapter. They were lightly bubbling and completely black! With the conductive solution, there was something going on with the circuit. Did I ruin the solution? What happened? Thank you!

    • @barnyardbikes54
      @barnyardbikes54 4 роки тому

      That's interesting. I've done that electro-dissolving technique for nickel, but not for zinc. I can't think of what would cause that. It's probably carbon from the vinegar, but I have no idea what would cause that species to precipitate. I'd just wipe or scotchbrite off the electrodes and try to plate some test pieces with it; see what happens. If it doesn't work, try again without the electro-disolving (which shouldn't be necessary)

    • @barnyardbikes54
      @barnyardbikes54 4 роки тому

      Not *necessary*, but the reason for using it is that it doesn't react chemically with the electrolyte (or slowly anyhow). If you use copper you may get some contamination in your electrolyte and on your work. It may be ok as long as you don't immerse the copper wire on the positive side (with the zinc). That way you aren't dissolving copper from the wire into your solution. It should be ok to hang the work on copper wire. You'll just be plating the wire with zinc.

      Cool! Thanks for the watch and subscribe! This lathe came with a nice Dorian AXA tool post. So I'm looking to make some tool holders for that (video to follow, soon I hope). I'm still looking for that spindle gear that I broke. If you know someone that does Sheldon parts if love to hear about it. As it is I'm slowly spending way more than the cost of the gear to fabricate a replacement.
