I only wish that combatants in wars these days would exhibit the same level of honour that these heroes did. The mentality of individuals in modern-day conflicts is "kick 'em when they're down". You should always exercise caution when committing any kind of terrible act, because chances are, you may just find yourself in the EXACT same situation somewhere down the line. One of the key differences between modern day wars and World War 2 is that the soldiers of WW2 were just defending their country and following orders. There was very little hatred between soldiers of each side, they didnt want to do horrible things in the name of a religion or beliefs etc. They just wanted to do their bit and get home to their families. There were many stories, in fact, of soldiers from opposite sides of WW2 actually helping each other and interacting with one another etc. They knew that it was very likely that each of the enemy soldiers probably didnt want to be there as much as they themselves. They all just wanted to get home. The change in mentality from then up until today is STAGGERING. Just look at the levels of hatred that are involved in today's conflicts around the world. Look at the despicable things that one set of humans are willing to inflict on another set of humans just because they conform to a different set of beliefs or they choose to adhere to a slightly different religious doctrine than each other. There is no such thing as a true P.O.W in today's world. Prisoners are only kept alive either to make a trade, or more often than not they are kept alive long enough for the captors to film the prisoner reading lines from a pre-determined script, only for them to then be executed in the most horrific manner they can come up with. And then they are constantly trying to come up with methods of execution that are more barbaric than the previous ones. Like, who on Earth would want to cram a load of people into a small building and then fire an RPG directly into the building? And then film the atrocity from multiple angles on 4K cameras, all while showing the gruesome parts in SLOW MOTION? Just in case it isn't already horrifying enough. Or sticking 4 prisoners into a big cage and then lowering that cage into a big body of water slowly. Again, making sure they have every possible angle covered with 4K cameras capable of showing slow motion shots of the bad parts. And then showing the prisoners slowly drowning under the water. If we were able to show these amazing elderly people what they fought and died for, they would be disgusted. Rightfully so.

Both British and Germans reportedly shot pilots who fired on parachutes as it was deemed cowardly and dishonorable. Thanks for uploading this. This is a good version of the clip. I remember watching this on the History Channel, as a kid, in the 1990's. It's one of the many things that show how "off the rails" WWII was. Later in life, I can appreciate more how skeptical the higher ups were about what he did, having now worked in corporate America. In addition, there's that story of the German fighter that escorted a damaged bomber back to England: the idea that there were German pilots who were "honorable" had a good amount of truth to it. So, for that German pilot to violate the standard rules, it just makes what Richard Peterson did all that more legitimate. It's all terrible, of course.

They're 50 caliber shells in this case. Weapons of that caliber are often considered anti-materiel. That is, you use them to explode buildings and vehicles, not people. And the pilot shot the German pilot... probably 100 times. A single one of those shells hitting you in the chest can explode the top half of your body away.
